‘825 Forest Road’ Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Are Maria And Isabelle Dead?

Published

Shudder’s 825 Forest Road is a horror thriller centered around a haunted town, Ashland Falls, and its sinister past. Chuck Wilson had moved to the strange old town with his wife, Maria, and his sister, Isabelle. After their mother died in a car accident, Isabelle struggled with her mental health. She was behind the wheel when her mother was killed, and she held herself responsible for it. Chuck thought it was not safe for Isabelle to live alone on campus, and he hoped she would recover well if she lived with her family. Chuck and Isabelle did not share a loving relationship. He’d abandoned his mother and sister to start a new life in the city, and Isabelle couldn’t bring himself to forgive him for it. Will the external terror bring the siblings together? Let’s find out.

Spoiler Alert

Why were the residents of Ashland Falls haunted by a ghost?

The surprisingly low cost of the spacious house had Chuck and Maria feeling a little suspicious, but their realtor confirmed that there were no dead bodies in the basement. It was an old house with good infrastructure, and the only reason (according to the realtor) it was not selling like hotcakes was because there were not enough people moving into Ashland Falls. As soon as the family moved in, trouble began.

Chuck was concerned about the leaky roof, and to his surprise, when he went through the pictures he’d taken to explain the situation to his realtor, he noticed a shotgun in them that was not there in reality. Chuck was horrified when he noticed Maria’s mannequin from her old store right outside their house. Maria had brought the mannequin along with her, and she suspected that Isabelle probably left it outside as a prank. Isabelle was equally shocked to see the mannequin outside, and she overheard their neighbor, Larry, advise Chuck to read up on the town’s history and find out about the ‘Friends of Gardening’ at the local library. Larry also mentioned that the previous owner of the house had killed himself, and apparently the town was haunted by a ghost, and she usually targeted those suffering from mental health issues.

Chuck browsed the library and got a few books to educate himself on the town’s history, but to his surprise, he found a stack of books lying on the floor of an aisle, and when he mentioned it to administration, they were flabbergasted. Later, we find out that apparently someone had died by suicide at the library, and he used a stack of books to hang himself. Even though the said books had been removed from the library, they often showed up under mysterious circumstances. As Larry had mentioned, there had been too many suicide cases in the town, and at an underground meeting of the ‘friends of gardening,’ Chuck discovered that it was all because of a ghost.

Helen Foster lived at 825 Forest Road during the 1940s. Her daughter, Mary, was bullied at school regularly, and as a concerned mother, she wrote to the school and the bully’s parents, the Clark family, to take some action. But things took a turn for the worse when Mary killed herself. Helen went on a rampage, killing the bully and his family before shooting herself with a shotgun. After the incident, the entire road map of Ashland Falls was altered, and 825 Forest Road could not be located anymore. But Helen’s ghost continued to terrorize the people of the town, and during the 80s, when the town council decided to bring to light the sealed documents to locate Helen’s house and destroy it in the hopes of getting rid of her ghost, she murdered the council members. It was almost as if the town was cursed to be constantly terrorized by Helen, and there was no way out. The Friends of Gardening were a group of people living in Ashland Falls interested in discussing ways to destroy Helen’s ghost. They thought their operation was secretive and that it would keep the ghost away (duh!). But of course, everyone in the town knew about it, and I’m pretty sure Helen knew about it too. How can you hide from a ghost?

Why did Helen target Isabelle and Maria?

What really doesn’t make sense in 825 Forest Road is that even though Helen’s daughter was a victim of bullying and suffered from mental health issues, Helen’s targets as a ghost happened to be those struggling with the same. While you cannot expect sympathy from a ghost, it just doesn’t make sense why Helen haunted people who were suffering in some way just like her daughter. Perhaps scaring the bullies would’ve made more sense! Isabelle was an easy target because she was battling depression after losing her mother. Helen also targeted Maria, who had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and took pills to navigate her day-to-day life. Maria could relate to Isabelle to an extent, and she wanted to support her, but their circumstances made it difficult for them to bond. Maria often wondered if every strange occurrence happening around her was orchestrated by Isabelle, and it was only towards the end of the film that she discovered that there was a supernatural entity in the house. Maybe Helen targeted individuals struggling mentally because they were easier to manipulate, and in some twisted way, she wanted them to suffer just like Maria had.

How did Chuck plan to destroy Helen?

Burning down Helen’s house was the only way the town could get rid of her, but without a map, it almost seemed impossible. However, a young girl named Ashley had figured out an alternative. She’d traced the town’s grid system to locate 825 Forest Road, and she planned on visiting the place. But as we witnessed at the very beginning of the film, Ashley’s obsession resulted in her death after Helen paid her a visit. Isabelle’s classmate, Luke, had always preferred staying away from anything related to Helen. But after seeing his friend in trouble, he decided to help. Luke visited Isabelle when he discovered that she was moving out of her house to live on her campus. He saw a picture of Isabelle and her mother and commented on how she’d changed quite a lot. Isabelle thought it was a terrible joke, but Luke explained that he’d met her mother a few minutes ago when she opened the door for him and told him that Isabelle was in her room upstairs. Both Luke and Isabelle figured out that the ghost had tricked him, but before things got worse, Luke fled from the scene.

Isabelle and Maria were the only ones in the house, and the ghost terrorized them and disappeared all of a sudden. We later discover that Helen didn’t vanish; her spirit had entered Maria’s body. The next day, when Luke came over to discuss the power grid and how they could trace 825 Forest Road, Helen overheard the plan. Chuck and Isabelle decided to find the house, and surprisingly Maria (possessed by Helen), encouraged her husband to leave while she spoke to the realtor who had showed up at their house to record a quick testimony. Isabelle requested Luke to stay back and be with Maria, and he happily obliged. While Chuck and Isabelle arrived at what they thought was Helen’s house, Helen discussed her life on camera instead of answering the questions the realtor had compiled. At first, Luke was a little puzzled, but the more he listened to Maria speak, the more he realized that it was Helen. During 825 Forest Road’s ending, Helen completely took over Maria, and her monstrous face was revealed on camera. She attacked the realtor, the cameraman, and Luke, and none of them were spared from her viciousness.

What happened to Maria and Isabelle?

When Isabelle and Chuck entered the deserted house, they searched for clues in different corners. Chuck discovered a box of letters hidden under a wooden plank. The letters were sent by Helen Foster to the Clark family. She had discussed the abuse Mary had faced, and she was hopeful that the family would respond to her concerns, but no one cared. The school, the family, and the town council chose to ignore her plea, and before she knew it, Mary had killed herself. Chuck was shocked when he discovered that, according to the address mentioned on the letters, the Chuck family lived at 825 Forest Road. So, where was Helen’s house? Surprise, surprise, she lived at 15 Rose Lane, the former address of Chuck and Maria’s house. It’s no surprise that anybody who set foot in 825 Forest Road was not spared, just like the Clarks. But why was 15 Rose Lane still a part of the town? Maybe the town council had wanted to destroy the house, but Helen’s ominous presence convinced them otherwise. The only option they had was to completely change the address and never mention what had transpired there. So, Helen continued to haunt whoever moved into the house, to the extent that they killed themselves.

825 Forest Road’s ending marks the possibility that there might be more than one spiritual entity present in the town. A spirit had grabbed hold of Isabelle and had taken her away, and it might well be that the entity was Mary. Maybe after her death, she desperately wanted to seek revenge on those who wronged her, and she was involved in the killings. Isabelle or anyone who struggled with their mental health was taken to the other side by Mary, maybe out of sympathy or simply because she believed there was no place in the world for them. Surprisingly, Isabelle had drawn a sketch a few years ago that replicated the final scene of the film, suggesting that, maybe subconsciously, she had already predicted a threat. Maybe it was all coincidental but significant nonetheless. Also, (this might be a wild wild guess), but can the Clark family be the one actually haunting the town? instead of Helen? Considering they targeted those suffering mentally, it just somehow makes sense!

Will there be a sequel?

825 Forest Road’s ending hints at a sequel that will possibly be set in the past, and we will hopefully get to know the story of Helen and Mary. The uncertain climax suggests that Maria and Isabelle possibly didn’t survive, but what happened to Chuck? That’s a mystery that is yet to be solved. Maybe after Isabelle and Helen are taken away from him, he’ll come up with a plan to destroy both the houses, but there’s a slim chance that he will survive. Will the disappearance (or possible death) of Isabelle and Maria become just another story of the town that remains unresolved, or is there any hope left? The film leaves it up to the audience to decide.
