The ending of Aniela (stylized as An!ela) sees the titular character entirely changed after having been forced to leave a lavish life behind and work on herself. The Polish Netflix original is a show simply about transformation but uses the most convoluted plot to get this across. While Aniela is the protagonist of this show, there are just too many other things happening to actually understand the point of it all until it’s a bit too late. But what we’ve got to remember here is that the protagonist is trying her best to redeem herself. All we know about her is that she used to be rich and spoiled, but now she’ll do everything she can to get her daughter back to her and also forge her own identity, because she’s been stuck under her husband’s boot this whole time. Honestly, everything going on here feels way too superficial to actually mean anything for the show, but we can break down the few things that make some sense and move on.
Spoiler Alert
What Happens To Aniela’s Ex?
Aniela’s big plan is to get Marecki arrested for embezzlement and fraud, etc. While this will land her husband in trouble, she doesn’t really care very much because all she wants is her old life back. She pretends like she’s making a deal with Marecki, but one by one, she knocks everybody down. I really don’t know what I’m meant to feel about the twins, but I guess since they wanted to shut the school down and worked with Marecki, they also came under the “not good people” category. Aniela makes sure that everybody on Marecki’s team is dealt with early in the final episode. I think the whole point is for us to see the difference between the people Aniela meets in the new community vs. the people she used to live with while she was at the top of the social hierarchy. Armani always feared that she would leave him the second her husband offered to take care of her again, but Aniela’s changed a ton ever since she was left with nothing.
This doesn’t mean, though, that she’s going to let her ex walk away after ruining her life just like that. She finally makes sure that she can keep her daughter and look after her. Lucja also seems to be happy staying back with her mom, because she sees what Aniela’s capable of when she helps the girls. Additionally, it’s interesting to see her be like a motherly figure to the other girls, but we never see it with Lucja. Maybe she’ll finally do something substantial with her daughter now that they’ll have all the time in the world together. Aniela tells her ex-husband, whom she’d stabbed in the first episode, “I’ve got to admit I completely forgot about that bit,” that he should leave the country or he’ll end up in prison. She tells him she’ll have Lucja meet him at some point, but basically, she’s finally won the custody battle, and she’s got her revenge on her husband, too.
Half the episode is spent on Aniela trying to break into Marecki’s place because the girls ditched her after their Italy trip. She gets him drunk, then goes to his home and tries to break into his laptop to get the confidential information, which would get him arrested. Layla and her people help her get what she needs, and the woman makes sure she delivers it to the right person. Women unite, am I right? I’m not entirely sure what is wrong with the twins being ambitious. I mean, Ewa was too overbearing, but Edyta wanted to do something good and did side with Aniela at some point. In the end, the stuff that Aniela tells both of them does come across as a bit lame and like she’s still proud of the fact that she’s rich, making her as obnoxious as she was at the beginning of the show again. There will be no PPP built at the school site anymore, though, so that’s the one good thing. Now, Aniela is the new principal of the school. In a way, she backstabbed the person who helped her when she needed someone the most, huh?
What Do Viola and Lena Do?
In Aniela’s ending, the titular character takes Viola and Lena to Banan’s concert after they sort out their feelings and apologize to her for ditching her earlier. She was trying her best to help them, but they were too busy trying to hold on to their own identities, so they pushed her away. However, they realized that all she was trying to do was help them. Finally, with her daughter, Aniela takes the girls to the Banan concert, where they sabotage his performance by having a rap-off with him. At first, it fails, and Maja has to step in to help them out a little bit, but with Armani at the beats and the stage all set for them, the girls do such a good job rapping that the crowd cheers them on, and Banan has no choice but to leave the stage. Eat the rich, I guess. At the same time, his dad gets shoved to the floor and can’t even call the cops for help. We know the boy was exploitative and might’ve ended up more like his father later on, so it makes sense that Lena and Viola hate him as much as they do.
The video is seen by dozens of people, and when Banan’s back home, his drunken father pukes on him when he gets arrested for embezzlement. At first, it looks like he’s about to kill himself by jumping into the pool, but I guess he was just trying to clean himself in an exclusive bath. I don’t know; maybe he needed a cleanse of the mind and soul, too. At the end of the day, Aniela found not only her clan, her people, she also found her purpose—to help kids find their own purpose. Now that she’s taken over the school, she’s got everything she needs, and her life’s set, just like before. She’s going to be rich again, which means she’ll probably go back to being cold and unhinged, but along with some young girls to make the whole thing super entertaining for her. Also, yes, of course she will say yes to Armani; he’s the love of her life, and he actually cares about her, the softie that he is.
