Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black ends with a number of intense twists, leaving viewers and fans intrigued enough for a 2nd season if Netflix approves of the project. Season 1, which released in two separate parts of 8 episodes each, mostly follows the life of the protagonist, Kimmie, as she struggles to leave behind the world of stripping and sex work to establish a better life for herself. The newly released part 2 deals solely with her determined effort at rescuing her younger sister, Sylvie, from her employers after they kidnap the young girl to seek revenge. In this article, we take a look at Beauty in Black’s explosive ending and briefly discuss the possible events in the next season, if the show is continued.
Spoiler Alert
Did Kimmie reunite with her sister?
In part 1’s ending, Kimmie had learned that her superiors at the adult entertainment club, Body and Delinda, had kidnapped her younger sister, Sylvie, only to get back at her. The kidnapping of Sylvie had been ordered by their boss, Jules, who wanted to punish Kimmie for her recent actions against the business and also to ensure that there would be a replacement entertainer for the club, since Kimmie was so adamant on leaving. Eliminating all the obstacles in her way, Kimmie keeps searching for her sister, until she finally learns that Sylvie has been brought to the club in a drugged state. Since Body and Delinda are no longer on the scene, another performer named Felicia is given the responsibility of preparing the girl for a performance that very night, and they basically plan on selling her out to interested clients.
Fortunately for Kimmie, she finally makes an alliance with Horace Bellarie after she has no option but to trust him, and she tells him about everything that has been going on at the club and also about how her sister has been kidnapped. Horace agrees to help her out, and he drives towards the club, since Kimmie is being looked for by Jules and his associates, meaning that she herself cannot participate in the rescue operation. Her close friend and aide throughout her adventures, Angel, happens to be inside the club, and it is he who sees a drugged Sylvie being brought in. Angel informs Kimmie right away, and he tries to hide the young girl inside one of the closets before Horace agrees to help and makes a plan to rescue her.
Since Horace frequented the club earlier, he knew of the parking lot behind the establishment, where only customers who paid huge amounts of money were allowed to enter. The parking lot was essentially an unofficial brothel, as customers could pay extra to get intimate with the performers from the club, and it was in this very way that Horace had gotten close to Angel. At present, Horace proposes to go to the same parking lot and ask for a young woman to keep him company, and he tells Kimmie to relay this information to Angel. It would then be Angel’s responsibility to ensure that Sylvie would be brought out to Horace’s car, and from there, they would have to improvise how to exit the place with the girl. As this plan kicks off, Angel gets caught by the guards at the club, and he is locked up inside the closet.
But since Felicia or her associates do not know who Horace actually is, they treat him like a regular customer looking for a young girl, and they readily hand over Sylvie to him. This is an immense success for Kimmie, who is also in the vicinity of the club in her car, and so she tells Horace that they should not let go of this chance. Despite the chaos that it would cause and the terrible danger that it would pose for them, Kimmie advises Horace to simply drive his car out of the parking lot, with Sylvie still inside, and assures him that she will create a distraction by slamming her car through the fence. Once the man agrees to the plan, Kimmie throws all caution to the wind and drives her car straight into the parking lot, making everyone at the place scatter in fright. This gives Horace enough time to escape with Sylvie, but Kimmie gets caught by Jules instead. Despite once again being in considerable trouble, Kimmie and Angel are ultimately rescued from the club by Horace once the latter realizes that the protagonist has not made it out of the parking lot. As soon as she is out, Kimmie brings Sylvie into a different car and drives to the hospital in order to ensure that the effects of the drug her sister had been given would not have any serious effects on her.
In Beauty in Black’s ending, Kimmie is reunited with Sylvie, and although it leads to a few difficult confrontations, the sisters are more than happy to be together once more. Sylvie tells off her sister for having lied to her for so long, since Kimmie used to tell her mother and sister that she was working as a nurse and doing quite well in life. By the end, though, Kimmie apologizes to Sylvie for having told her all these lies and also for having left her with their cruel mother and abusive stepfather, and the younger sister apologizes to her for the mistakes.
What twist does Horace pull out of his hat?
During his second rescue operation, when he saves Kimmie and Angel from Jules and his goons, Horace suddenly falls sick, and the exact reason for it is not made clear. It could be that the news about his trusted henchman, Jules, secretly running an operation with his brother, Norman, that too dealing in immoral industries like a strip club and a prostitution racket is too much for Horace to handle. Plus, he also learns from Jules at this point that Kimmie had thrown Roy out of the hotel window, and although he genuinely dislikes his son, this is also perhaps too much of a shock for the elderly man. However, it could also be that Horace has been suffering from some ailment for some time now, and this is what makes him extremely sick.
Horace has to be rushed to the private hospital owned by the family by Angel, and it is here that he pulls out a major twist from his hat when Kimmie comes to visit. The genuine hatred that the Bellarie family members have for each other has been a constant throughout Beauty in Black season 1, and so when Horace wanted to cut out his two sons from his will, it did not come as a surprise. Horace basically wants neither of his two sons, Roy and Charles, to get any part of the Bellarie family wealth, and he feels that his ex-wife, Olivia, also does not deserve to get any of the money. When he consulted his lawyer, Varney, about the matter, he discovered the loopholes mentioned in the family will.
Currently, Horace and Norman are the ones in possession of the family wealth, but Olivia and her two sons have been waiting for Horace to die so that they can get their share of the inheritance as well. But Horace does not want this to happen, and Varney tells him that the only way to avoid such an outcome would be for him to marry someone else so that he can leave the inheritance in her name. Therefore, in Beauty in Black part 2’s ending, Horace asks Kimmie to marry him, and he clearly mentions that it has nothing to do with any physical or emotional attraction. He states that he wants to help Kimmie out in her life and also specifically strip his wife and sons of their inheritance, and it is because of this that he wants to marry the protagonist.
Can Horace’s family stop him from executing his plan?
Although the marriage proposal is a huge surprise for Kimmie, she does eventually agree to it, not only because of the enormous wealth that will come her way but also to protect herself and her sister from the other Bellarie family members. Horace had already asked Varney to fix an appointment with a council of lawyers and a judge at his house, where he would have seemingly cut his sons out of his will. But now he changes the location of this meeting to the private hospital where he is undergoing treatment, and in order to prevent anyone unwanted from reaching the spot, he even employs a private security team to guard the hospital wing.
Out of sheer luck, Olivia happens to visit the hospital on the same day to attend a charity event, and she happens to come across her ex-husband’s name on the patient’s plaque in front of a ward. She is alarmed by the fact that Horace is sick and in the hospital but is unable to get any more information from the doctor attending to his health. This is when she calls up each of the Bellarie family members and also their henchmen, like Jules, and informs them about Horace’s condition, since none of them actually knew about the patriarch’s recent actions. All of them come to the hospital to find out what is going on but are unable to access the wing until Varney and the lawyers reach the place.
Varney is also shocked to find out that his client has suddenly decided to marry, which would cut out everyone else, including his beloved, Charles, from the inheritance, and so he sneaks out and informs them about the development. The family members rush into the ward angrily, but they are unable to do anything to stop Horace from executing his plan. Horace had already been prepared for this outburst, and so he had seemingly already signed the necessary documents. Although we do not technically see Horace and Kimmie getting married at the end of season 1, the man does announce to his family that Kimmie is going to be the latest addition to the family and also that she is going to be the new boss of the Beauty in Black business.
What happens to Angel?
Beauty in Black season 1’s ending also introduces a completely new, and arguably unnecessary, plotline when Sylvie suddenly notices a seemingly dead body inside the car when she is being driven to the hospital. As revealed later on a news program, the body belonged to an elderly man whose daughter, a certain Mrs. Lakeland, had stopped by the road earlier when she saw a crashed car hanging dangerously from a bridge. Although Mrs. Lakeland had stopped to help the passengers in the car, the vehicle was actually being driven by one of Jules’ men, and he was taking Kimmie to the club. Kimmie had used this chance to escape in the helpful woman’s car, and the elderly man had supposedly remained in the backseat from then on.
The elderly man happened to suffer from diabetes, meaning that he died because he did not receive the daily dose of insulin, and nobody noticed his presence in the car earlier because he also could barely speak due to his dementia. Therefore, by the time Kimmie used the same car to take Sylvie to the hospital, the man had died in the backseat. But significantly, Mrs. Lakeland was married to a dangerous criminal named Daniel Lakeland, who has quite a notorious reputation in the city. Thus, when Angel learns about this connection in the news program, he immediately realizes that the body needs to be removed and all connections with Kimmie need to be erased. Since Mrs. Lakeland had already informed the police about the carjacking she had experienced, a $100,000 reward has been announced for information about the missing man.
In the end, Angel tries to remove the dead body from the car, which has been sitting in the parking lot at the hospital, but he gets caught in the act by two police officers, who had apparently been waiting for the perpetrator to arrive. Angel seemingly gets arrested on suspicion of being the carjacker and therefore the murderer, and his fate is left unclear in the end.
What can we expect from season 2?
Going by the views that Beauty in Black season 1 part 1 garnered for Netflix, and also given Tyler Perry’s niche popularity, it is extremely likely that the series will return for a second season. Besides, the plot also has quite a few new avenues to go down, and season 2 can be expected to be mostly about how Kimmie’s new position as Horace’s wife is taken by the rest of the family members. Horace’s ill health might also mean that the man will die in the next season, which will bring even more trouble for Kimmie. While Olivia and Mallory are definitely enraged by the fact that they will receive no part of the inheritance, the latter is even evidently angry at Kimmie being made the new boss of the family business. Mallory also has a deep-rooted hatred for Kimmie because she was the sex worker whom Roy hired for his acts of infidelity, and so she will definitely become an even stronger antagonist in season 2. The new mystery introduced at the end, about the death of the elderly man, will also have repercussions on the protagonist, as the dangerous criminal, Daniel Lakeland, will want to avenge the death of his father-in-law. Kimmie also promises to take revenge against her abhorrent mother, for having sold off her younger sister, and this too might take place next season. This means that Kimmie will have to face off against danger from both within and outside her new family, and although there is really no need to continue this already terrible story, all this and more will play out when Beauty in Black season 2 arrives some time in the future.
