The ending of Netflix’s new English drama show, Bet (a live-action remake of the anime series Kakegurui), promises it will return with another season. It is up to Netflix to greenlight the show, but considering that the main plot remains unresolved, we can definitely hope that the series will be renewed. As someone who has neither read the manga nor watched the anime series, this article is purely based on my understanding, or rather assumption, of how the narrative might unfold in the next season.
Spoiler Alert
Will Yumeko’s Mother Return?
In Bet’s final episode, we learned that Jo and Keiko had developed a financial system that promised to make wealth more accessible to people by bypassing the government and the banks, naming the new digital currency Bitcoin. The school board members, who we later learned were also members of the Kakegurui Club, had agreed to invest in Jo and Keiko’s business. While the couple had promised the investors a huge return, they eventually refused to pay them back and disappeared with all their money. This apparently was the reason why Yumeko’s parents were killed.
Before Gabriel died as a result of poisoning, he mentioned that Yumeko’s mother, Keiko, was alive. Was he bluffing so that Yumeko would somehow force the antidote into his body to keep him alive? Or was it indeed the truth? Considering Gabriel’s vulnerable situation, he might have told Yumeko the truth, just because he wanted her to suffer by keeping the most crucial detail a secret from her. As much as Yumeko loves her mother, a part of her might be a little disappointed knowing that she was alive yet she’d never tried to reach out to her. Or maybe she had. Maybe it was Yumeko’s mother who’d arranged her admission at St. Dominics because she wanted her daughter to seek revenge on the people who had destroyed their lives. Yumeko had been preparing all her life to finally confront the killer(s), and perhaps it was all funded by Keiko. She never showed up, but she must have been keeping a close watch on her daughter.
Also, how did Keiko manage to survive? It is possible that she was rescued at the right time, or maybe it was all a grand scheme. If Keiko faked her death to escape from the investors, why didn’t she help Jo as well? Were Yumeko’s parents in disagreement about the usage of their innovation? Maybe Jo had agreed to Arkadi’s terms and conditions, but Keiko was not on onboard. She was the inventor, and she created the technology with a purpose in mind, so maybe she was not ready for it to be used for a sinister cause. This disagreement might have escalated to the point where Keiko decided to save herself (and her creation) for the greater good. This is, of course, a theory, but you never know!
How Will Kira Take Her Throne Back?
We might get to witness the most unexpected friendship in season 2 of Bet —Yumeko and Kira. Throughout the first season they competed against one another indirectly, but the final episode suggested that they will collaborate to take down the school board. All her life, Kira had tried to impress her father, but after he humiliated her in front of the entire board and the school council, she became vengeful. She wants to prove that her father had made a terrible mistake—and what better way to make him feel it than by destroying his entire world with Yumeko’s help? In Bet season 2, Kira will compete against her sister, Riri. Considering how deeply they once cared about each other, it is hard to imagine the shift in their dynamic. But Kira loves her throne, and she will likely go to any extent to win back her status.
Bringing down the influential board members will be anything but easy, but the girls strongly believed in taking risks; after all, they were compulsive gamblers! They will definitely manipulate and bluff to reach their goal. But is Kira ruthless enough to kill her father? Or will she back out at the very last minute, perhaps when it will be too late to reassess the degree of punishment?
Will Michael Take Revenge On Yumeko?
Michael will certainly turn against Yumeko, as he knows that she was the one who had plotted to kill his father, Gabriel. The friends will likely turn foes, and Michael can go to extreme lengths to avenge his father’s death even though deep down Michael knows that his father was a morally corrupt man. With Kira joining Yumeko, Michael will only find support from Dori, who is obsessed with him and will do anything for his happiness. After Gabriel’s death, Michael will inherit his wealth and also his share of the business. He will presumably be a changed man by then. He may no longer make decisions based on morality but instead from a business perspective. Hopefully, Michael will figure out soon enough that he is not his father, and that might help fix his relationship with Yumeko. He will likely understand Yumeko’s reason for crossing the line eventually and may forgive her, befriending her again.
Will Riri Try To Kill Yumeko On Her Father’s Orders?
In Bet season one we barely get to know Riri, but in season 2 we might see her take center stage. Now that she has become the school representative, she will play a more decisive role. The moment Arkadi finds out that Yumeko was Jo and Keiko’s daughter and that she is also in possession of the key, he will definitely ask Riri to obtain the key by any means possible, even if she has to kill Yumeko for it. Moreover, the board members will also use their influence and power to torture Yumeko to get the key. Arkadi might not even spare Kira for plotting against him. But will Riri go against her sister for the sake of being her father’s favorite? Or will the sisters unite and challenge Arkadi?
Behind that mask perhaps hides a wounded teenager who is being misunderstood. In the first season of Bet , it became evident that Arkadi was an abusive husband. Just like Kira’s mother, Riri too had seen her mother hide the scars. Maybe the only reason Riri has been following her father’s orders is because she wants to find the right moment to kill him. She was perhaps heartbroken when Kira attempted to choke her; maybe she wanted to tell her half-sister the entire truth, but she couldn’t. She had to pretend to be a loyal daughter to win her father’s trust and stab him in the back.
Will Yumeko Find The Key?
One of the most crucial details that we found out in the last episode was that there is a key that can unlock the $30 billion that Yumeko’s parents stored in the form of digital currency. Before bidding her daughter farewell, Keiko had handed Yumeko a poker chip. From the age of six, Yumeko held the chip close to her heart. It was the last thing her mother had gifted her, and she would rather die than lose the chip. This is obviously a very important clue— the key to the digital lock might be embedded into Yumeko’s chip pendant. She basically has access to billions of dollars, and it will be interesting to find out what Yumeko will do with it. Will she live a lavish life after avenging her parents, or donate the money for a social cause? Because one thing is for sure—she will not pay back the investors! They’d killed her parents, and even if they were con artists, it didn’t matter to Yumeko. The series and its characters are not driven by a conventional moral compass, especially considering how easily the characters moved past the whole ‘Blake’ incident. They watched their classmate/roommate die, yet they lacked remorse. So, the truth might not change the way Yumeko felt about the people who had murdered her parents.
If Kira figures out that Yumeko has access to all the money that Keiko stole from the investors, she might try to gamble her way to get it back towards the end of season 2. But will Yumeko trust her fate with something so crucial?
Will Kira and Yumeko gamble against each other?
The only reason Kira agreed to team up with Yumeko was because she desperately wanted to get back her throne. She needed to prove to the student council and also the school board that she was the most deserving candidate in the institute. The minute Kira’s position is restored, she will likely turn her back on Yumeko. Just like her father, Kira too would want to be the most valued member of the gambling club so she could take control of the board and throw her father out, just like he threw her out, and for that she would need the most valuable item on the show, that is, the $30 billion Bitcoin currency. So in season 2’s ending, we might get to witness a final battle between Kira and Yumeko, where they will gamble to reach the top.
What Had Happened to Ryan’s Father?
Mary had once mentioned that, according to rumours, Ryan had killed his father. Yumeko laughed because she thought it was impossible. But why was Ryan’s father killed? Did he go against Arkadi as well? Did he have any connection with Keiko? In Bet season 2, we can expect to find the answers.
While Ryan is in love with Yumeko, there is a romantic spark between her and Mary, and who knows, maybe the upcoming season will also explore their relationship. Though Mary’s friendship with Riri is equally promising and clearly Riri is head-over-heels in love with her. There is already a lot that we can anticipate might happen in the next season and we also eagerly look forward to the new characters that might be introduced as well.
