Sometimes you get intrigued by the characters in a show, and at times you don’t understand what they are trying to do. In Billionaires’ Bunker, it is unfortunately the latter that holds true. Apart from that, I believe a not so intriguing screenplay didn’t help the cause of the characters, making the series a tedious watch. So let’s get to know these characters and try to figure out what motivated their actions.
Spoiler Alert
Anezka Saicova as Ane
Ane was like a ray of sunshine, somebody who exuded dizzying amounts of positivity. We didn’t get to know her directly, but witnessing the kind of attachment Max had with her, we can imagine that she must have been a beautiful soul. Ane and Max were a match made in heaven, and had she not met her fateful end, I believe they would have spent a lifetime together. Ane must have been the kind of person who would have wanted her family and friends not to grieve her absence but instead to cherish her memory in a heartfelt manner.
Elizaveta Maximova as Asia
Asia, Ane’s younger sister, didn’t know how to cope with the grief after Ane passed away. For the longest time, Asia blamed Max for everything that had happened, and there was a part of her that despised him. But she was a complicated woman, and there were aspects of her personality that nobody was aware of. Aisa was in love with Max, but she had been in denial for the longest time. She had made herself believe that she despised Max, but after she moved into the bunker, it became impossible for her to hide from reality. I believe if there is a Billionaires’ Bunker season 2, Asia and Max will have a crucial role to play, and life will definitely give them a chance to be with each other.
Marek Lambara as Max
Max was a rich spoiled brat, and his life changed completely after he was sent to prison for involuntary manslaughter. He was bullied and tortured in the prison to the extent that he felt he wouldn’t be able to survive. But then he had an epiphany of sorts: he came to terms with the pain, he surrendered to his circumstances, and he stopped trying to control the outcome. His life completely changed after that, and when he came out of the prison, he was a different man. Max had realized one thing: he couldn’t let that tragic incident haunt him and he would have to let go of his past and start afresh. He decided that he would not torture himself for things that were not under his control. Max, at the end of season 1, was able to find a way out of the bunker, which made him a threat to Minerva. I believe Max will be on the run in season 2, and he will try to find a way to expose Minerva and her organization.
Zdenek Hruska as Guillermo
Guillermo Falcon, the CEO of Falcon Industries, was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He might have been a great father, but he was a horrible partner. He disrespected his first wife to the extent that she suffered from all sorts of mental health issues. And then we saw how he treated Mimi, his second wife, and told her to her face that he didn’t love her. Guillermo had been having an affair with Frida, apparently for the past 20 years. He called Rafa his best friend, yet he didn’t hesitate to betray his trust, and felt no guilt for doing that. Guillermo was robbed at the end of season 1, something which he was unaware of. It would be interesting to see how he survives in that bunker, now that even Rafa has come to know the kind of treacherous man he was.
Martin Sobotka as Rafa
I believe he was the most good-hearted person among all the people in the bunker. He loved his wife, and his world was shattered when he got to know that she never had any feelings for him. She had in fact been betraying his trust and cheating on him for the past 2 decades. Even after knowing that his wife had had an affair, he never spoke ill about her. He felt that even if she didn’t love him and disrespected him, he should give her all the respect he could from his end. I think that, if there is a season 2, we will see a different side of Rafa. He had gotten to know that Frida had lied to him about having an affair with her yoga teacher, as it was his best friend Guillermo who had backstabbed him. There was a rage in his eyes when he confronted Guillermo and Frida at the end, and I believe that there will be a stark contrast in the way he deals with things henceforth.
Andrea Elsnerova as Frida
Frida was one of the most deceptive characters in the series. At first, I felt like she was a good mother and partner, but the moment her truth came out in the open, that illusion was washed away. I mean, for a mother to favor her extramarital partner over her own son was something that I had not heard of before. I was just not able to wrap my head around how she could unabashedly speak about how she didn’t feel like meeting Max in prison because he had killed Guillermo’s daughter. She apparently couldn’t bear to see her lover in such a sad state, and so she left her son rotting in prison and didn’t even make the effort of going and visiting him. Frida had hurt a lot of people, and I think she will have to pay a huge cost for it in season 2. She was a woman with twisted sensibilities, and I don’t think anybody could trust her.
Ivana Mollbachova as Victoria and Anna Theimerova as Mimi
Victoria, Max’s grandmother, was another strange character who was selfish enough to throw anybody under the bus. Victoria had a brief affair with Mimi after the latter broke up with Guillermo. She was such a reckless and irresponsible woman that she made Mimi consume drugs even when she knew that her liver had failed and she was in need of immediate medical care. She had some illogical theory by which she lived. Victoria was just lucky that she had survived even after getting diagnosed with a terminal illness. She felt that she knew how things worked in life, but she had no idea about it. Mimi, on the other hand, suffered a lot because of Guillermo. She didn’t deserve to be treated like that, and the only thing she did wrong was to trust her partner and think that he would never betray her.
Jolana Smyckova as Minerva and Ondrej RychIy as Ziro
Minerva and her younger brother, Ziro, were the ones who had come up with the idea of creating a luxury bunker for the billionaires. They were people who had worked hard to build a life for themselves but then realized that no matter what they did, they would never be able to reach the top of the food chain. They wanted to take revenge on every privileged man or woman and thereby shake the foundations of a capitalist society. But they really took things to extreme lengths, and I don’t think they would be able to find a way back. Also, Ziro was very weirdly possessive of Minerva, and he definitely was suffering from some kind of social disorder. Things are definitely going to get difficult for Ziro and Minerva in the future. Oswaldo had almost exposed them, and now even Max had been able to escape from the bunker (I am assuming).
Lucie Stepankova as Julia
Julia was Minerva’s employee, and also her lover. She shared a beautiful equation with her, and I believe she brought out her humane side. Julia was an important part of the entire plan, but Minerva took things to extreme lengths, and she was not able to deal with that. Julia made up her mind to leave the bunker, and she told Minerva about it. Before Minerva could reach a conclusion or warn her, Ziro killed Julai. Though Ziro took the defense that Julio could have compromised their entire plan, I believe he just used the situation to his advantage. I think that Ziro didn’t want Julia in his sister’s life, and he just found the best possible excuse to kill her. The other members of Minerva’s team didn’t know that Julia had been killed by Ziro, and I think that in the future, if it is revealed, it would become an issue for Minerva.
Jakub Saic as Oswaldo
Oswald became collateral damage, unfortunately, and it was just his luck that he tried to contact Guillermo at the wrong time. Oswald was Guillermo’s childhood friend and his colleague too. He worked closely with Guillermo and often was in charge of all the important business. Minerva and Ziro created an AI clone of Guillermo, and through it they deceived Oswaldo and made him transfer around $900 million from the company’s accounts. Poor Oswaldo realized that he had been scammed, and he wanted to find the perpetrators. But before he could lodge an official complaint, he was killed by Minerva’s men. I believe that Oswaldo’s death could kickstart a chain reaction that could potentially expose Minerva and her plan in the future.
