In the previous episode of Billy the Kid season 3, we saw that Billy finally got caught and was taken to a prison in Mesilla. From what I observed, the media turned Billy into a monster—sensationalizing his story, painting him as a cold-blooded killer, and giving the public a narrative of him that wasn’t based on reality. Billy wasn’t a monster; he was a victim who was shaped by the very system that failed him. He became what he did because of a society that pushed him to the edge. So, let’s find out what happened in Billy the Kid season 3, episode 5, and if Billy was once again able to get the better of the police.
Spoiler Alert
How did Billy escape?
Billy was put behind bars, and two deputies, Bob Olinger and James Bell, serving under Sheriff Garrett, were asked to keep a close eye on him. Garrett had told his deputies to be very cautious, as he was well aware of what Billy was capable of. Generally, the prisoners were taken to a canteen across the street to have their meals, but Billy was not allowed to do so. Garrett had told his deputies to keep his cell locked at all times and never leave him unattended. If it had been up to Bob Olinger, I believe he would have killed Billy there and then. The man despised him, and we saw in the previous episode how he was itching to pull the trigger on him. I believe had it not been for Garrett, Bob Olinger would have killed Billy instead of capturing him. Billy also didn’t hold back, and he triggered Olinger as much as he could. Billy was the kind of man who paid attention to details. Probably that was the reason why he could stay two steps ahead of the police at all times. James, unlike Olinger, was seemingly friendly towards Billy. Billy also liked the man, and he knew an honest fellow when he saw him. James played cards with Billy and had a chat with him whenever he got an opportunity. Billy realized that he could have a window to escape when either of the deputies took the prisoners for lunch. James had started to trust Billy, and so when the latter told him that he wanted to use the washroom, James took him. Billy used the opportunity to push James and take his gun. Billy told James that he didn’t want to kill him, as the former genuinely believed him to be a good man. But unfortunately James got paranoid, and he tried to escape from the station. That’s when Billy shot at him, and he died on the spot. Instantly, Billy felt guilty for taking the life of an innocent man. But he didn’t have time to mull over his actions. He quickly grabbed a gun and a few rounds of bullets from the armory. By then, Bob Olinger had arrived at the scene, and Billy took great pleasure in killing him too. Olinger deserved it, and I don’t think Billy felt any kind of remorse for taking his life. A local man came to Billy’s aid, helping him break his chains and setting him free once more. And then, true to his spirit, Billy mounted his horse and galloped into the endless grasslands—a free soul once again, reclaiming his name and reminding the world what he was capable of.
Why was Emily vouching for Billy?
Frankly, there were many moments when I couldn’t quite understand what was going on in Emily’s mind. At first, I thought she would hold her father responsible for her husband’s death, but she didn’t do anything about it. Then, she contacted Garrett and asked him to investigate the matter privately. So, either she was too afraid to openly go against her father, or she didn’t want to believe any narrative without solid evidence. It also felt like Emily had some ulterior motive when she asked her father for a job and told him she no longer wanted to be a teacher. That decision, too, left me puzzled. If she even slightly suspected that her father was behind her husband’s death, why would she move into his house and accept his favors? At one point, I felt she was developing feelings for Garrett, but when he made a move, she made him feel as though he had completely misread her intentions. All in all, I think Emily herself is confused. She can’t seem to make up her mind, or perhaps she’s deliberately hidden her true motives, pretending to be on everyone’s side while secretly using them to serve her own purpose. Nonetheless, in this episode of Billy the Kid season 3, Emily finally went and asked her father why he needed to get Billy executed. The judge had given Billy the death sentence, and Catron was a relieved man and was even planning to personally attend the public hanging. Catron told Emily that Billy had committed heinous crimes, he didn’t deserve to be a part of the civil society, and moreover, he was Irish, making it sound like that was a sin in itself. Emily told her father that the American society was made of all sorts of people and Billy too deserved to live there. But nobody could change Catron’s views, though I was a bit surprised when Emily defended him.
Did Peter Maxwell Betray Billy?
After escaping from the prison, Billy went to meet Dulcinea, and for a moment she couldn’t believe her eyes. Billy didn’t want Dulcinea to be with him, as he knew what Garrett was capable of. In episode 5 Garrett found all of Billy’s allies and threatened them to reveal where Billy was hiding. Garrett also found Dulciena, and he asked her to reveal Billy’s location. When Dulcinea didn’t say anything, Garrett couldn’t hold back his anger and ended up slapping her. Billy was livid when he got to know about it, and if things wouldn’t have been so bad for him, he would have definitely taught Garrett a lesson. Garrett paid a visit to Pete Maxwell, as he was somebody who was known to share a close bond with Billy. Pete didn’t tell Garrett anything, but then something strange happened. After leaving Pete’s house, Garrett came back once again. At that point in time, Billy was at Pete’s house. Garrett appeared in front of Billy all of a sudden and shot at him. We don’t know if Billy survived the attack or if he perished. Might be wrong, but I don’t think that Pete snitched on Billy. I guess Garrett had assumed that Billy would pay Pete a visit sooner or later, which was why he came back once again. I believe if Billy does survive this attack, though the odds of that happening are less, he will find it extremely hard to escape from captivity. Garrett would definitely not be careless this time around, and he would make sure that Billy meets his fateful end. As for Catron, I don’t know if his lies would ever be exposed. I would want Emily to take charge of her own life and make an effort to find the truth about her father.
