‘Billy the Kid’ Season 3 Finale Recap & Ending Explained: Is Thomas Catron Dead?

Published

Billy had been the most wanted outlaw for a long time, but nobody had been as obsessed with catching him as Garrett in Billy the Kid season 3. He made chasing Billy and putting him behind bars the mission of his life. Garrett was the kind of man who loved fame. He rode with Billy when it suited him, and then later he joined the police force. Garrett became the sheriff, and over a period of time, he realized that if he was able to catch Billy the Kid, he would leave behind a legacy, and his name would be remembered for years. The real difference between somebody like Billy, George, and the other loyal men of the group and Garrett was that Garrett’s actions weren’t driven by a passion to bring about a change in the system. He didn’t care if the system was corrupt or not as long as it benefitted him. Garrett almost got the better of Billy in the previous episode of season 3, but call it fate, destiny, or sheer luck that Billy miraculously survived. Billy went after Garrett, and he made sure that he killed the man. Meanwhile Emily, who had stopped talking to her influential father, Thomas Catron, got back on talking terms with him after her husband’s death. Emily, since the beginning, suspected it was Catron who had killed her husband. I felt that, even after knowing the truth, she created an illusion for herself and made herself believe that he probably didn’t have anything to do with her husband’s death. Before leaving Lincoln City, Garrett did two things—he tried to force himself on Emily, and he told her that though he didn’t have evidence to show her, Catron had killed her husband. Emily was in a very strange place. She wanted to take revenge on her father, but she had no clue how to do that. Had it been anyone else, she probably would have gone and shot him down, but here things were a little complicated. Ideally, Billy should have laid low after literally coming back from the dead, but he didn’t do so. I believe these were the things that made the outlaw a revered figure of American society. He might have been declared a fugitive by the courts and the administration alike, but one man’s terrorist is another man’s revolutionary. Billy was the voice that the downtrodden and the oppressed had never had. Billy, in the previous episodes of season 3, made it pretty clear to Jesse that he was not going to stop before he killed Catron, as he was the root of all the corruption and one of the main leaders of the Santa Fe ring. Billy set out to find a way to kill Catron, and so let’s find out if he was able to accomplish his mission or if Catron got the better of him.

Spoiler Alert

What plan do Billy and Emily make?

Billy went to meet Sam, who owned a bar in Lincoln City. Billy knew that probably he could give him some insight and show him a way to get to Catron. The problem was that Catron was not a commoner. He was the governor, and as stated earlier, he was a member of the Santa Fe Ring. Sam told Billy that what he was asking him to do was above his payroll, as he was merely a bar owner, but he stated that Catron’s daughter, Miss Emily, might be able to help his cause. Billy was a bit amused when he heard that, as he hadn’t expected that Emily was capable of going against her father. But still, Billy trusted Sam, and so he went to meet Emily. Looking at Emily’s eyes, it seemed she was awestruck by the sight of the man whose name was already a part of American folklore. People had written stories about Billy, and he was no less than a cult figure, especially for those who had never crossed paths with him. Emily told Billy that her father was going to go on a whistle-stop tour, where he was going to address people in several towns. She said that his tour was going to end in Albuquerque, and that she would try to get his itinerary and find out which stations he was going to stop at. Emily told Billy that not even for a moment should he think that she was doing him a favor, because in reality she was plotting her father’s death because he was not a good man, and moreover, he had killed her husband. Though Billy didn’t say explicitly that he was going to kill Catron, Emily could tell. When Emily went to meet Catron, the latter told her that the tour was very important to him, as in the future he wanted to fight the presidential elections. In his pompousness, the man stated that he wasn’t scared of Billy now, and he felt that the boy couldn’t do any harm to him. Emily managed to get Catron’s itinerary, and she gave it to Billy. Billy got ready for the final showdown, and he believed that he would be able to take down his man.

 Why did Jesse come back?

In Billy the Kid season 3, episode 8, Jesse came back and joined his best friend on his quest. Billy knew deep down that Jesse would come back to him, but it was still a pleasant surprise for him, and he felt even more motivated to go and achieve what he had set out to. Billy asked Jesse what made him change his mind, and that’s when the latter opened up about his past. Jesse told Billy that his father was always hustling and in a hurry, as if he was trying to outrun somebody. He said that he had his first conviction when he was arrested together with his mother and father. After Jesse left Billy and went his separate way, he realized that one never gives up on family.

Billy came to rescue Jesse when he was stuck in a dire situation. And moreover, they had a long-standing relationship where at times they wanted to kill each other, and other times they were ready to give their lives to save one another. Their actions were deceptive, but deep down they both had an immense amount of love for each other. Jesse told Billy that if he had to die, then it was better to perish alongside his friend rather than pass away in obscurity where no one even cared about him.

Was Billy Able To Kill Thomas Catron?

Billy and Jesse went to Mesilla, through which Catron’s convoy was going to pass. But before they could do anything, Catron’s guards and the local police got to know about them, and they attacked their safe house. They got exposed because of Jesse’s carelessness, though Billy didn’t come to know about it. Jesse bumped into a female escort, and he couldn’t stop himself from indulging with her. When the police arrived at the brothel, that girl recognized Jesse and told the officers about him.  Jesse and Billy made a close escape, and the latter was disappointed as he didn’t know when he would get another opportunity. Billy met Emily once again, and that’s when the latter came up with a plan. She told Billy that if she went on campaign with her father, then she could distract the audience and give him a window to attack. Billy didn’t want Emily to risk her life, but the latter told him that he shouldn’t worry about her. Billy requested Emily to do just one last thing for him. He told her that he had a friend named Ash Upson, a journalist who happened to have found incriminating evidence on the Santa Fe ring. Billy asked Emily to make sure that his findings reached the public and that his death didn’t go in vain.

At the end of Billy the Kid season 3, Jesse and Billy finally reached Albuquerque. The moment Emily took the stage, Jesse and Billy attacked Catron. While Emily told the audience about the corrupt practices of her father, Billy and Jesse killed the guards and finally shot at Catron. The governor of Lincoln City died right on the spot, and Billy avenged the death of all those innocent and oppressed people who had become his victims. Billy and Jesse tried to escape, but the latter got shot, and he realized that he wouldn’t be able to make it out alive. Jesse decided to stay back and buy time for Billy. Billy obviously was not willing to leave his friend behind, but Jesse convinced him and told him that he would do no good by staying back. Jesse died like a martyr, but before passing away, he made sure he took several other officers with him. Billy reached George’s house safely, and together with Dulcinea and his child, he decided to leave for Mexico. With tears in his eyes, George wished his friend goodbye, hoping that he would have a good life. Billy didn’t know if the death of his comrades amounted to anything and if, by killing Catron, he had been able to make any difference. I believe he did. He made the people believe that equality was their birthright and nobody had the authority to discriminate against them and force them to live in such deplorable circumstances. I think Billy was the spark that made the people realize that at times they needed to fight for their rights and not back down in front of an oppressive regime.
