‘Black Crab’ Trailer Breakdown: This Time, It’s Ice on Fire

Published

The “Black Crab” trailer reveals a group of six soldiers who are sent on a life-threatening mission across an archipelago fully covered in ice, Operation “Black Crab.” Among them is Caroline Edh, for whom the mission can not only stop the war but also bring her daughter back to her. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, fallen and divided by war, “Black Crab,” from the looks of the trailer, will make for an impactful Swedish action thriller.

A Bait of War

Clearly, there are two plots in the film. One will showcase the war and the politics that comes with it. So, we can expect double agents, double-crossing, backstabbing, treachery, and, of course, murder “in cold” blood. The six soldiers will have to deliver a mysterious package to the other side of the archipelago. So, a huge chunk of the movie will comprise this journey across the ice, and it will be a highlight. Caroline Edh (Noomi Rapace) is shown a picture of her daughter and told that she was found in a refugee camp. But is her daughter really alive, or is the photo just bait? If alive, then the incident that led to their separation will also be shown, be it in real-time or in the form of a dream. Or, if it is bait, all we expect is for Caroline to discover that her daughter was in the custody of his seniors all along. Alternatively, it can be her who is used as the bait. Either way, it is highly unlikely that her daughter will be revealed as dead. They don’t do this in movies. But for a film that will seemingly rely on so much action, a catharsis in the form of a reunion is a probability.

The Cold

There are lots of action thrillers that have made use of a post-apocalyptic world, for example, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Book of Eli, World War Z, Contagion, I Am Legend, and more. But the trailer for “Black Crab” shows how the cold will be a thematic element in the film, more like a character. The soldiers will be sent on a mission across an archipelago that has, for the first time in 37 years, covered itself in ice. From the looks of it, they might be showing the Stockholm Archipelago, the largest of its kind in Sweden. Large-scale action sequences are shot in the snow as well as in the ice-cold waters. Director Adam Berg seems to have thoroughly maintained the presence of snow in order to stress it. Perhaps the cold weather is symbolic of the cold heart of a mother who has lost her daughter in the war.

The Technical Aspects Of ‘Black Crab’ Trailer

From the trailer, it is clear that the creators have gone to great depths to recreate the atmosphere and the surroundings, especially the scenes underwater. There is one scene, in particular, that is “chilling,” the one in which Caroline throws light on the ice, and we see multiple frozen bodies underneath. Art direction and cinematography will be two very important aspects of the movie. As for VFX, they can use it to extend the snow and add features of cold weather like ice and frozen water. There are also large-scale explosions that can also use VFX for enhancement. Overall, the trailer for “Black Crab” looks compelling. It sort of has Ubisoft’s The Division (video game) look, especially the world, but this bit is for gamers only.

“Black Crab” is a Swedish action-thriller directed by Adam Berg. It has Noomi Rapace (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “Jack Ryan” series, “Sherlock Holmes” movie) as the promising lead, and it will release exclusively on Netflix on March 18, 2022.
