Blind Spot, written and directed by Rakesh Verma, falls prey to cliches that make the narrative a bit predictable and less thrilling than it could have been. The film has some really interesting subplots that had a lot of potential, but I believe somewhere down the line, due to the convenient twists and turns, that potential couldn’t be harnessed properly. That said, let’s find out what happened in Blind Spot and who was behind Divya’s murder.
Spoiler Alert
What happened to Divya?
Every married couple argues once in a while, every marriage has its issues, but at times the relationship deteriorates so much with time that nothing can fix it. I believe Divya and Jayaram’s relationship had reached that stage. They did not make any effort to understand each other, and moreover, they both got on each other’s nerves. Jayaram couldn’t stand Divya even for a moment, and there were days when he booked himself a hotel room and stayed there just to spend some quiet and peaceful moments where nobody bothered him. Divya had doubts about Jayaram’s loyalty, and she quite blatantly taunted him about it, making his life a living hell. One night, just before Jayaram left his house to take a flight, he had a huge fight with Divya. Jayaram had reached a stage where he had just stopped reacting to whatever his wife said, which made Divya even more frustrated. Laxmi, the house help, tried to intervene, but Divya slapped her in anger. It felt as if she had some grudge against Laxmi, and she did not like the fact that the latter interfered in their personal matters. Jayaram did not like how his wife disrespected Laxmi, and unable to control his impulses, he slapped her back. Divya felt humiliated, and she stomped out of the living area and went to her room. Jayaram left to catch his flight after that incident, and Laxmi went back to do the household chores.
Later in the night, Laxmi asked Divya to come outside her room, as her little baby was crying. When Divya didn’t answer, Laxmi went into the room, only to find that Divya had taken her own life. Laxmi informed the police about what had happened, and that’s when Officer Vikram arrived at the scene and took charge of the investigation. It didn’t take long for Vikram to come to the conclusion that Divya had not committed suicide but had been murdered. Jayaram’s brother, Aditya, was asked to come to his brother’s house, as the police couldn’t get hold of Jayaram at that moment. Aditya had just joined the National Investigation Agency (NIA), and he couldn’t understand why somebody would take Divya’s life. Jayaram also came back to his house, and that’s when certain revelations were made that opened a can of worms.
Who were the prime suspects in Divya’s murder?
Vikram’s first suspects were Laxmi and Jayaram, and he came to know that they both had been having an affair, which Divya obviously would have had a problem with. Laxmi had called Jayaram after she found Divya dead in her room. Jayaram told her to call the police and not tell them that she had called him first. Jayaram did so because, just before leaving, he had had an argument with Divya, and he knew that the police would think that he had something to do with her death. Vikram got to know that Jayaram had a son from his first wife who was not doing well mentally. After talking to him, Vikram figured out that after Jayaram left and before Laxmi found Divya’s body, Laxmi had gone to her house for some time. Laxmi lived just nearby, and when asked, she didn’t hide the fact that she had actually gone back and left Jayaram and Divya’s little child unattended for a bit. Laxmi stated that, after meeting her daughter and sweeping out the rainwater that had entered her house, she went back to Jayaram’s house and found Divya dead. But according to Vikram, that was not what had happened. In a shocking move, Vikram called Laxmi’s daughter Manasa and asked her directly why she had killed Divya. Vikram had found a piece of Manasa’s earring at Jayaram’s house, and so he became sure that it was she who had had an altercation with Divya that resulted in the latter’s demise. Manasa admitted that she did have a fight with Divya, though she didn’t have any intention of killing her. Manasa told the police about how Divya treated her and her mother (probably because she knew of the affair).
It was also revealed that Manasa was Laxmi and Jayaram’s daughter, which was why (probably) Divya couldn’t stand the sight of her. Though Laxmi was quite subdued as a person and she made peace with how she was treated, Manasa wanted to take what was hers. She didn’t like the fact that Divya troubled her father so much and made the life of her mother a living hell. Vikram thought that he had found his killer, but it was not so. The forensics report stated that though Divya had a head injury (as a result of the altercation that Manasa had with her), it was not the reason behind her demise. It was also mentioned in the report that Divya had probably been drugged, because of which she lost her life. Vikram came back to the crime scene, and he once again made a breakthrough and figured out that Vinod, Jayaram’s son, was hiding something from them. Divya had even treated Vinod badly, and the kid had grown to hate the woman. He took some poisonous chemical and mixed it in Divya’s juice. After testing that chemical, it came to be known that even that didn’t cause Divya’s death. The mystery seemed to be getting more and more complicated every passing day. Vikram didn’t know what to do next and how to find the killer. But then a crucial discovery was made by the forensics experts. Vikram was told that the substance used to poison Divya was an extremely rare one, so much so that the drug couldn’t be detected in a normal autopsy. The forensics expert told Vikram that the murderer was an extremely skilled and knowledgeable man who knew a lot about forensic science and how to murder a person without leaving any kind of trail. From that moment, Vikram became suspicious about Aditya, Jayaram’s brother, who happened to be a part of the NIA. He was somebody who was well aware of the investigation procedure; he knew how the criminal mind functioned, and he knew how people got away with murder due to a lack of evidence.
Who Murdered Divya And Why?
Just a couple of days after the revelation that a very rare drug had been used to kill Divya, a fire broke out in the forensics lab, and all the files and evidence got destroyed in it. Vikram inspected the area, and he found a part of Aditya’s identity card lying on the floor, which made it clear to him that the latter was the murderer and that he had intentionally caused a fire to destroy the evidence. But there came a twist at the end of Blind Spot, and it came to be known that everybody had been blinded by the real killer. Vikram went to Aditya’s house to arrest him, but the latter got the better of him and took him to the NIC headquarters. The fact was that Aditya was carrying out his own investigation in parallel, and he had found out certain things that made it clear that Vikram was the one who had murdered Divya. Yes, Vikram, the cop who had been investigating the case, was the murderer, and he had played his cards so well that nobody came to know about it.
A few days prior to Vikram being taken into custody, Jayaram’s neighbor had shown everybody the CCTV footage where an anonymous man was seen entering Divya’s room through the window. When Aditya conducted his investigation, he found Vikram’s watch crown (the rotational knob on the side that is used to adjust time) lying just beneath Divya’s window. He sent it for testing, and it came to be known that that crown had traces of Divya’s blood and the drug used to kill her on it. Now, since the crown was from an expensive watch, he knew that he could send it to the company and find out who the buyer of the watch was. This piece of evidence was enough to prove that Vikram was guilty. After Vikram realized that he wouldn’t be able to evade conviction, he told Aditya the reason behind the murder. Vikram had had a difficult childhood, and he’d had to toil really hard from a very early age to even procure a day’s meal. Vikram met Divya, and both of them fell in love with each other. Divya’s presence gave Vikram something to look forward to in his life. Vikram got selected for the police force, and the Inspector General of Police, impressed by his work ethic and talent, offered him his daughter’s hand in marriage.
Vikram loved Divya, but he knew that marrying the IG’s daughter would give him a ladder to the top of the social hierarchy. Vikram should have told his superior about his relationship, but he chose to stay quiet. He married Shweta, the IG’s daughter, and Divya just couldn’t make peace with that fact. Divya also married Jayaram after that, but she just couldn’t forget about Vikram. Also, we got to know that Vikram was the biological father of her son, which Jayaram probably also didn’t know. There came a point where Divya started blackmailing Vikram to be with her, and that’s when he decided to kill her. As stated by Aditya, Vikram used his watch crown to inject the drug into Divya, and in a matter of a few hours she passed away. But when Vikram came to investigate hours later as a police officer, he saw that somebody had hanged Divya’s body in order to make it look like a suicide. He realized that something must have happened because of which the person who did it felt that they had killed her. Vikram knew that he could pin all the blame on that person and save himself. Manasa believed that she had killed Divya, and Vikram realized that. So, he pinned all the blame on her, but unfortunately Aditya found the truth and gathered evidence to prove his claims.
In Blind Spot’s ending, Vikram was sent to prison, and I believe that the guilt of ruining the life of a girl who loved him so dearly would always haunt him. He knew that no matter what reasons he gave himself or how he justified his actions, he had let his greed ruin Divya’s and even his own life.
