‘Blockbuster’ Ending And The True Story Behind The Last Store, Explained: Will There Be A Season 2?

Published

Netflix’s “Blockbuster” is a comedy series created by Vanessa Ramos that tells the story of an American video rental store, Blockbuster Entertainment Ltd., that opened in 1985 and became well-known throughout the country. All of these stores ran at a significant loss as Internet usage expanded over time, and by 2019, there was just one remaining.

The Netflix series is a fictional tale that tells the story of the last Blockbuster store owned by Timmy, who puts all his efforts into bringing back the popularity of the store. Timmy feels that technology is in abundance, but it is causing the most precious thing—human interaction—to slowly diminish.

Timmy was an Asian-American man who wanted to prevent the last Blockbuster store from closing. He wanted to bring people to his stores like in the old days, so he began to put his best effort into it. His store employees, Carlos, Connie, Hannah, Kayla, and Eliza helped him through this situation. Also, Timmy’s close friend from high school, Percy (played by J.B. Smoove), who ran a party store in the area, tried to assist him as much as he could, but he occasionally worried Timmy because he was having difficulties paying his rent. However, Timmy took care of everything. When they had a “Blockbuster” party to attract more customers to their store, a massive gorilla balloon caught fire, causing a ruckus that attracted media attention and increased their consumer base. Finally, a solar storm on Christmas Day resulted in widespread internet problems. During this situation, a large crowd of customers gathered in the store, but a fight between them ultimately caused chaos.

‘Blockbuster’ Season 1: Ending Explained – Is Timmy Able to Express His True Feelings?

Timmy (played by Randall Park) and his store employee Eliza (played by Melissa Fumero) were high school friends. Timmy had a crush on her since he was a young boy, but he never told Eliza about it. When Eliza began working at Timmy’s store, the two reconnected, but they were still just friends. Even though they wanted each other, they were unable to express themselves. Eliza, though, always made an effort to stand by Timmy. Every time Timmy was in difficulty, Eliza was an amazing advisor for him. But the issue was that Eliza’s ex-husband, Aron, who had cheated on her once, wanted to reconcile with her. Eliza reunited with Aron, only thinking about her daughter Ali, but she was not happy with him at all. Timmy also started dating Lena, a neighboring store employee, but Eliza’s name came out of Timmy’s mouth in front of Lena, causing her to break up with him. On the other hand, Eliza declined Aron’s proposal to remarry him, stating that she loved Timmy. But due to the solar storm outside, Blockbuster was overloaded with customers, which led to a ruckus in the store, and thus neither Eliza nor Timmy could express their feelings to each other.

When Aron asked Eliza to marry him, Hannah’s video camera captured everything, including her confession about Timmy. Let’s assume that although Timmy and Eliza didn’t get together this season, this video recording might expose their true feelings in season 2.

What Is The True Story Behind The Last Store?

Seeing how Netflix and Amazon have taken over the show business, we almost forget that once upon a time, we had to rent a CD to watch a movie or play a video game. Long before this digital revolution, America had one such famous entertainment store, named “Blockbuster,” that used to provide rental services for movies and video games. The last store in America is currently located in Bend, Oregon. The first Blockbuster store opened in Dallas and other cities, including Texas, in 1985, but it wasn’t very popular at the time. The time period between 1990 and 2000 was the most prosperous phase of the company as it rose to fame across America. Digital media’s gradual invasion eventually resulted in the closing of all the stores. In 2019, the store in Australia also closed, making the store in Oregon the last ever Blockbuster in existence.

What Should We Expect From Season 2?

Even if a good job doesn’t reach the highest level of achievement, it will eventually be given the recognition it deserves, such as Blockbuster. The company’s enormous franchise collapsed when Netflix media captured the attention of millennials, Gen Z, and the whole entertainment industry, but ironically, the same Netflix produced a ten-episode lengthy series about the last Blockbuster store in the world.

We are certain that the series will return for a second season, where we may witness Eliza and Timmy sharing their feelings with one another, which will probably bring them together. Once more, we’ll catch glimpses of Carlos and Hannah’s developing relationship and their ongoing chemistry thereafter. However, we will have to wait until the next season to find out what will be the fate of the last store. Will Timmy’s Store regain its previous glory? Or, he will have to deal with a worse crisis and have to bid a final goodbye to his precious store, which is evidently his only existence. Season 2 would clear up all of these uncertainties and bring much more fun than its predecessor.
