‘Borat’s American Lockdown & Debunking Borat’ Summary & Review – Adversities of Conspiracy Theories

Published

Sacha Baron Cohen through his portrayal of Borat Sagdivev has always tried to show a mirror to society, in his own fun and comical way. The mockumentary series, Borat’s American Lockdown & Debunking Borat, is a satirical hit on Conspiracy theorists who caused death and distress in the world.

Enveloped in 7 episodes of 7 minutes each (except the first base episode), the series interviews two conspiracy theorists, Jim and Jerry. While filming the Borat Subsequent Movie Film, Sacha spent five days with them in their house, while trying to find his daughter, Tutar.

Sacha has his own unique way to captivate the audience’s attention before plunging into dark waters. With Debunking Borat, he first establishes his presence as a comic genius, titillating the funny bones. When he has his viewers’ attention, he starts to unravel the narrative. After the first establishing episodes, the later ones are a 7-minute interview session of Jim and Jerry with scientists, doctors, and reporters who try to debunk their infamous conspiracy theories floating around Coronavirus, Vaccines, Hillary Clinton, and Bill Gates.

With the advent of Covid-19, conspiracy theories around the world witnessed strong limelight. Many people, bored in their homes, spread fake news/ misinformation, creating disharmony in the world. Former President Donald Trump played an active part in playing with the human psyche, further igniting racial hatred. During the initial period, Dark Net and other conspiracies web started as a source of entertainment for the new digital world, but in Debunking Borat, the creators share strong historical references, calling fake news, a cause of possible fatality.

One of the panelists, Sir Richard J. Evans shared historical references about Jews who faced adversities in the 13-14th century. They were minorities and thus were soft targets of larger communities. The theories that started in the 14th century, continued for a much longer span, something we already know about.

The series doesn’t explore the reason “why” conspiracy theories become an instrument in spreading false narratives. But it discusses much more about their methods of spreading news. Many of these individuals hold a personal hatred against a community, or ideal, and thus look out for easy-soft targets. Trump used the same basics to spread hatred against Asian communities calling Coronavirus a Chinese Virus that increased racial crimes against Asians in the USA. Similar other incidents have been briefly but strikingly discussed.

With a running time of around 1 hour, Debunking Borat is an important mockumentary series. It is crisp, to the point, and funny. Witnessing the rigidity of Conspiracy theorists makes us doubt our own intentions and make us more conscious of things we write on Digital Platforms. Today, each of us holds a social responsibility for spreading or using false narratives, and thus, from our end, we need to be more aware. Fake information could cost millions of lives.

Borat’s American Lockdown & Debunking Borat is a 2021 Mockumentary Series. It debunks the myths of two conspiracy theorists, Jim and Jerry. Season 1 is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
