‘Breathless’ Season 3 Theories: Is Nicolas Dead?

Published

The ending of Breathless season 2 leaves us with expectations for yet another season of the show. Just like the previous season, the final episode ends with a massive twist that leaves you craving more. This is a tactic as old as time, but for this show in particular, it definitely works. At the end of the second season, the big disaster comes when Biel asks his dad, Nicolas, to come prove that he didn’t make a mess of the Sophie situation. His dad, who has just become a father for the second time, makes a turn in a rush (though I don’t think he needed to be that reckless) and ends up getting hit by a massive vehicle. The car flips over, and we’re left wondering if he died while Biel, for the first time, calls the man “Dad.” This leaves a big opening for a season 3, and though nothing is confirmed yet, we can expect a 3rd season next year because (I called it early on) this is the Spanish show that’s taken the Netflix world by storm.

Spoiler Alert

Will Nicolas die?

In my opinion, Nicolas is going to survive this accident, because if he doesn’t, it would be very impactful to Biel psychologically. Sure, at the moment it’s going to mess him up anyway, but feeling guilty about causing an accident is better than carrying the guilt of a death. Biel calling him Dad means that they’ve finally moved forward in their relationship, and Nicolas has given him reason to trust him. However, in the last moments of season 2, Biel’s trust is broken, or so he thinks, because everybody believes somebody tipped off Sophie. But like Nicolas points out, it’s possible that Sophie just caught on to what was going to happen by herself and disappeared. Unfortunately, Biel doesn’t want to give the man who abandoned him a chance until it’s a bit too late. Biel doesn’t hate his dad anymore, though, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to work on that relationship through the next season of Breathless. However, if Nicolas ends up dead, it would leave Biel heartbroken, not only because he’s lost his father, but also because he’s the reason his stepbrother is going to be fatherless (yikes). I guess that would also leave room for Irene and Biel to have some sort of face-off? Or at least her hating him if she finds out? Maybe he’ll spend more time with them because of his guilt.

Will the Cops Track Sophie Down?

It’s clear from both the trail of dead patients and how efficiently Sophie cleaned out her office that she’s something of a pro when it comes to dipping out when she’s not wanted. The French superstar oncologist knows she’s been faking her results, and she knows how grave a sin that is, but she’s convinced her work is for the greater good. The combination of moral superiority and genius is what makes her both dangerous and useful, and with Patricia still needing her last dose of treatment, maybe she’ll have some leverage, given Patricia’s party won the elections again. But even if the cops are told to look the other way and Sophie can find some isolated or hidden-away center to further her research in, there’s still a chance she’ll be found. Earlier in Breathless season 2, Nestor had paid a journalist friend of his to look into Sophie’s past and dig up her record, and he’d returned with far juicier intel than Nestor had expected. If the team at Joaquin Sorolla Hospital are keen to find her in season 3, they know just who to turn to, though it’s not out of the question for Sophie to reach out herself, especially if she can get Patricia to really pull some strings.

Who Will Jesica End Up With?

Jesica’s been on a real rollercoaster ride this season, not even including her love life, but it’s her love life we’re talking about here. This season saw her choosing Lluis over Biel after he bends the rules to keep her alive. But she’s obviously pretending that they still have a spark, considering she spent the whole of the first season cheating with Biel. Anybody in their right mind would choose Biel over Lluis, because the man is divorced, older, has a kid, and is essentially too busy to actually do anything for Jesica. This is why she went for Biel in the first place. At the end of Breathless season 2, she decides to leave Lluis, who she’s engaged to, because he reminds her that she’s just a subordinate in front of him. It’s all about the male ego here, and he’s proven that he doesn’t actually care how she’s feeling. At this time, Jesica’s obvious choice would be to go back to Biel; however, she’s just found out that Biel has slept with her med school best friend, Lucia.

It looks like there’s something off between Jesica and Lucia in that they had a falling out at some point, and I think it might’ve been over a boy, too. At the same time, Lucia tried to break things off with Biel just before the blunder at the hospital happened, which means Biel, Lucia, and Jesica will essentially be alone next season. I guess this time it’s up to Biel to choose, eh? Though, I’m not so sure I like Jesica with him anymore, considering how she broke his heart and didn’t even bother telling him about the engagement, etc.

Will Patricia Stick to Her Privatization Plan?

As Patricia said halfway through the show, the election at the end of the season was practically like a referendum on the question of the privatization of Valencia’s healthcare system. Her opponents had picked very clear positions, sandwiching her between the left and the far right and limiting the room she had for political maneuvering. It was very difficult to root for her privatization plan when the show made it obvious the kind of difficulties it was putting the hospital staff through. Privatization is pretty much synonymous with cutting corners, and as a part of that process, one of the operating rooms got infected with Aspergillus mold, putting the lives of doctors and patients at risk.

There were numerous other issues, including the exclusive supply deal with Healock Pharma that left them short of supplies after a terrorist attack sent tons of people to their ER. Plus Nicolas’ tactic of diverting expensive-to-treat cases away to other hospitals and refusing patients when the ER was full. It’s clear that the privatization methods meant to increase efficiency on paper were harming the doctors and patients, the very people the hospital was meant to protect. But the promo material they shoot focuses on the shiny new gyno department and ignores all the real problems, so everything looks good to the public. I suppose Patricia will see her election win as the public endorsing her privatization plan and carry on with her plan. Let’s hope that doesn’t cost any more lives.
