The 2024 Irish thriller drama film, Bring Them Down, presents a relatively common and slightly predictable revenge story with great style and confidence and is beautifully driven by the acting performances in it. The plot is centered around Michael O’Shea, a shepherd somewhere in rural Ireland, whose life is suddenly disrupted by some unexpected events owing to the actions of his neighbor, Gary, who also rears sheep to earn his livelihood. The film interestingly takes a non-linear approach, as we witness the same events, first from Michael’s perspective and then from that of Gary and his teenage son, Jack. Bring Them Down is absolutely terrifying at its most intense moments, purely because of the violent tendencies of vengeful humans, and makes for a very entertaining watch.

What is the film about?
Bring Them Down begins with a flashback scene in which a car is seen driving down the narrow forested roads somewhere in rural Ireland, with the passengers feeling nervous about the driver’s temperament. Soon enough, the car suffers a terrible crash, probably falling down a ditch, and it leads to some serious consequences. As the film jumps forward many years, we learn that the driver on that fateful day, Michael O’Shea, had unfortunately lost his mother in the crash. Now an adult man, Michael lives a lonely life, spending his days on the family farm looking after their sheep, while his father, Ray, is unable to contribute in any way because of him being bound to a wheelchair. The car accident had not only caused the death of Michael’s mother, but it had also led to his breakup with his childhood sweetheart, Caroline, despite the two having once dreamt of spending their lives together.
Surviving the crash had helped Caroline realize that she could not be with Michael anymore, and the deep cut on her face still acts as a reminder of the immense physical and also definitely emotional pain that she had had to go through at the time. At present, Caroline is married to a man named Gary, and even has a teenage son with him named Jack. As it so happens, Gary is also a shepherd and is a neighbor of the O’Sheas, living on a property right beside theirs. Despite having genuinely loved Caroline during his younger days and seemingly still having some feelings for her, Michael does not keep any friendly relations with his neighbors and has hardly ever gone to their farm in these many years. He has accepted his sad fate and has settled into his lonely life, having gotten over all the emotions and traumas associated with his youth. However, this situation quickly changes when Michael returns home one night to find the gate of their property torn down and tire tracks on the piece of road that belongs to them. Although the area has recently had a horrific storm, the gate had clearly not been damaged naturally but had been mowed down by someone. Michael does not initially make too much of it until he realizes that Gary and his son, Jack, are trying to sell off two sheep that belong to him. Michael tries to intervene in this sale, and it leads to a feud taking shape between the two families, which soon takes a very violent form.
How does male ego play a part in the violence in the film?
One of the central themes in Bring Them Down is the fragility of the male ego, which makes men turn vengeful and hateful in a matter of minutes, and it quickly becomes one of the reasons for the family feud that follows. In this context, Caroline is unwillingly a reason for the feud, which further goes on to highlight how women are still considered objects of possession to fight over, at least by some of the characters. Despite being married to Caroline for so many years now and even having a son with her, Gary is still extremely insecure and distrustful in his relationship, for he suspects that his wife still loves her ex-boyfriend. Gary is an emotionally weak individual who always finds a way to create some unnecessary misery for himself, particularly with regards to his relationship with his wife.
It can be guessed that Gary is the kind of person who happily agreed to marry Caroline and spend his life with her because he was romantically interested in her but could also not get over her earlier relationship with Michael, about which the whole community had known. Therefore, when their marriage is now at the brink of breaking down, Gary automatically assumes that the reason his wife wants to leave him is so that she can reunite with Michael, which is completely untrue. Caroline wants to separate from her husband because she has accepted a new job position in a different city in Ireland, and she wants to move from her hometown and finally see the world. Gary does not believe any of this, though, and so he has an inherent dislike, and almost hatred, for Michael, despite the latter never having done anything wrong or unfriendly to him.
Therefore, when Michael catches Jack trying to sell two of his sheep at the town auction and naturally tries to intervene, Gary does not take it very well, even though it is his son at fault. Although Gary does later reprimand Jack and tell him off for his actions in private, his male ego prevents him from stopping his son in public, particularly in front of Michael. This is because the fragile nature of his ego always makes him fear that Michael is his rival in romance and, therefore, a nemesis to always be up in arms against. Thus, when Michael calls out his son’s theft in front of everyone at the auction, Gary is triggered, and he starts to chase the man in their car, all while the trailer carrying the flock of sheep is still attached, which leads to a crash.
Gary also always blames Caroline for the troublesome actions of their son, as if she has been raising the boy by herself, although it is later revealed that Jack had been acting a certain way because he was thinking for his father and was affected by Gary’s sensitive nature. Unsurprisingly, he often raises his hand against Caroline, and the latter has to retaliate by getting physically aggressive as well, leading to an extremely unhealthy and toxic environment at their house, which ultimately ends up affecting Jack terribly.
Can Ray be held responsible for the fiasco?
While Ray O’Shea lost his mobility quite some years ago, he still casts a long shadow on the life of his son, Michael, and can be partly held responsible for the horrible feud. Like Gary, and perhaps most men in the kind of society that Bring Them Down tries to talk of, Ray also blames his deceased wife, Peggy, for all the struggles and difficulties of his life. However, it is to be mentioned that Ray does not know that his wife had actually died in a car crash, but believes that she had simply left the family. Peggy was indeed planning to divorce Ray and move away from the town, and Michael did not tell his father what had actually happened. Therefore, the old man still lives with the bitterness of his wife leaving him, because of which he is harsh and unhelpful towards everyone.
On the very first night, when all this began, Gary had come to Ray’s house to ask for permission to access the road on his lands, as the bridge connecting Gary’s house to the main road had collapsed due to the storm. However, Ray had refused to help, and his only reason apparently seemed to be that Gary was either not of Irish descent or was not able to understand or speak Irish Gaelic. The bigotry of Ray is very evident here, as he still considers non-Irish-speaking people to be outsiders, despite the man in question having lived in the town for so long as to own land there. This passive-aggressive exchange is also what riles Gary up and leads to him mowing down the gates to the property with his truck, which technically starts the whole feud.
While Michael has plenty of respect and love for his aged father, there is also a sense that Ray’s harsh words for his son sometimes make Michael question his worth and ability, because of which he takes his father’s vengeful words too seriously. Michael is obviously infuriated and enraged after seeing a van leaving his fields after having severed the hind legs of his sheep and leaving the poor animals to die mercilessly. When he reports this to his father and then also takes Ray to witness the horrific scene, the old man orders his son to go bring him the head of whoever had committed this act of treachery. Michael feels that his father is implying that he can never achieve such a goal, which is what drives him even more towards seeking bloody vengeance.
Therefore, Michael goes over to Gary’s house, believing that he must have had a hand in the massacre, hides in his pickup van, and then reaches the camp of the builders that Gary had hired to rebuild the bridge in front of his house. Michael believes that the builders had been paid to torture his sheep and cause him financial harm, and he attacks one of them, ultimately decapitating him and packing the severed head in a bag to bring to his father. But Ray had surely not been expecting his son to actually carry out his order, which is why he is terribly shocked upon seeing the head, perhaps realizing he had pushed his son to commit a heinous crime.
How are Michael and Jack very similar to one another?
Bring Them Down’s ending revealed that Jack had been acting against Michael not only to help his father’s business but out of a very strong feeling of hatred against him. While Caroline had been planning to leave her husband, Jack started to believe that she was doing so to get together with Michael. It is very possible that he is influenced by Gary’s opinions on the matter, and Jack’s warm blood makes him plan direct attacks against Michael to humiliate and hurt the man in every way possible. It is because of this that he steals two sheep from Michael’s herd after he overhears his parents’ fight, where Caroline’s wish for divorce is made clear.
The film also somewhat brings to light the scary effects of having bad company around and the matter of teenage crime, for it is only upon his cousin Lee’s insistence that Jack goes through with the plan of cutting off the sheep’s hind legs and selling them off for money. He cuts all ties with Lee after this incident, as Jack is shocked by the mental burden of mercilessly hurting so many animals for no good reason, especially because he often works with the animals belonging to his family. Jack’s hatred of Michael still remains intact, although he also gradually grows very scared of the man and expects him to retaliate.
Ultimately, Jack lands himself in a similar situation as Michael once was in his own youth, for the latter had intentionally caused the accident that had killed his mother. Michael did not want to kill his mother, surely, but he was tremendously disturbed and agitated after hearing that his mother wanted to end her marriage and leave his father. Perhaps Michael too had misunderstood Peggy and felt that she wanted a divorce only because she had another lover, just like Jack feels about Caroline. Both the sons essentially tried their best to keep their families from breaking apart and did not care about crossing all limits to do so. The only difference between Michael and Jack in this regard is that while the former had lashed out against himself and his close ones, killing his mother and injuring his girlfriend (which also led to her breaking up with him), Jack lashes out against the man he believes to be his mother’s lover.
What happens to Michael and Ray?
In Bring Them Down’s ending, Michael gets stabbed by Jack, and then during the ensuing altercation, Jack gets stabbed as well. Finally coming to his senses that he should act his age and also because Michael did not really have any intention of hurting the young man, Michael carries Jack back to his house, where Caroline had been treating Ray. Seeing her son injured, Caroline obviously tends to Jack first and drives him away from the scene, while Michael is seen entering his house, with his stab wound clearly still bleeding.
While Bring Them Down’s ending does not confirm what happens to Michael or his father at the end, it is very likely that their lives will now get much more difficult, even if they survive. Ray seemingly suffered a heart attack in the end, while Michael has been stabbed, and his wound has not been tended to. But what is even more difficult for them is that they have lost all their sheep, meaning that they have lost their source of livelihood. Michael has ended up committing a murder, which will surely bring the law to his doorstep, and there is simply no chance for Ray to survive by himself once his son is arrested. Michael and Ray will either die shortly, due to their respective physical conditions, or will live and struggle for a long time. They are in an extremely dire situation either way, and this is perhaps why the film leaves us without confirming the fates of Michael and Ray.
