‘Bulgasal: Immortal Souls’ Episode 13 & 14: Recap/Ending – Will Sang-un Abandon Hwal?

Published

In the previous episodes of “Bulgasal: Immortal Souls,” Sang Un has started regaining memories from her past life, after getting stabbed in the same spot where she had a scar in all her previous lives. She saw a cruel vision of Hwal from her past and got scared of him. Hwal has also heard a disturbing truth from Eul Tae about himself: he was the original Bulgasal and had asked Eul Tae to turn him into a Bulgasal again after his human reincarnation. Will Hye Suk’s prophecy about returning memories come true? Will Hwal and Sang-un turn into rivals after learning the truth about each other? Let’s find out.

What Is Eul-tae’s Strategy?

Hwal had betrayed Eul-tae and left him in pain in the forest. Eul Tae threatens Hwal that he is no longer going to play it safe and that if he is going down, he will drag Hwal’s family to hell with him. Hwal has less to worry about as long as his family stays hidden in their secret hideout, but his plan falls apart when Hye Suk brings everyone back home because Si Ho and Do Yun insisted on it. Hwal gets mad at her for putting her family, i.e., Do Yun, Si Ho, and Detective Kwon, at risk, which hurts Hye Suk, who has always considered Hwal her family.

Eul Tae has his men planted around Hwal’s house, and now no one can go anywhere safer without being tailed. Eul Tae has a bigger plan, and he is not going to hunt them down himself. Eul Tae sends police to Hwal’s house with the help of a minister who was on his payroll, to arrest Hwal and Sang Un as murder suspects. He knows that Hwal is smart enough to not get arrested, but this move will force him to leave the house, which will make it easier to catch Si Ho and Do Yun. Everything happens according to Eul Tae’s plan, and Do Yun and Si Ho are kidnapped under the name of witnesses.

Detective Kwon is busy searching for Eul Tae when he finds a suspicious spot. That’s when he gets a call from Hwal that the others have been kidnapped. The police have taken them, but instead of going to the police station, they go towards a forest, away from any human habitation nearby. Detective Kwon’s trusted junior detective, Ham, is also with them on Eul Tae’s special order, but he has no idea what is going on. Kwon trespasses on the private property and sees strange activities happening at a warehouse, but he is not going in to face Eul Tae alone. Can Hwal reach there in time to save his family?

Why Does Hwal Turns Violent?

Hye Suk followed Do Yun and Si Ho when the police arrested them. Eul Tae didn’t have anything to do with her, but she got herself involved for the sake of Hwal. Eul Tae has hired a monster to kill Do Yun and Si Ho, and when three of them are getting beaten by the monster, Hye Suk makes a prophecy that enrages Eul Tae. She says that evil energy will come out when the one who made the dark hole closes it. It means that Hwal will kill Eul Tae as he had made the dark hole when Eul Tae became a Bulgasal. He attacks and kills Hye Suk. Detective Kwon enters after Eul Tae leaves, but it is too late. Eul Tae has already taken down Hwal’s one family member.

By the time Hwal and Sang Un arrive, the monster has left Kwon injured and taken Do Yun and Si Ho to an unknown place. While everyone is sad to see Hye Suk lying there in blood, Hwal shows no feeling of grief, and Sang Un is not impressed by this behavior from Hwal. He has no time to cry or regret and has only one thing on his mind: to find his wife and son. He almost kills detective Ham out of anger, but Sang Un reminds him that he does not kill humans. Hwal spares Ham’s life in return for the monster’s background information. They are headed towards the monster’s location, leaving Kwon to handle Hye Suk’s situation.

Hwal has always been merciless towards monsters, but Sang Un hasn’t seen that side of him very often. From her memories, she is already terrified of the monster that he was, but she is implying those memories on Hwal now and wondering if he is still the same monster. She is beginning to doubt Hwal’s intentions and whether to trust him or not, while Hwal has no time to think and is only concerned about saving his family from Eul Tae, and he will go to any extent to do that.

‘Bulgasal: Immortal Souls’ Episode 14: Ending

Si Ho and Do Yun fool the monster and run away to a farm, but they cannot keep running away in the monster’s own territory for long. The monster is only keeping them alive because his real target is Sang Un, who will come to save her sister. When the monster finds them, they decide to run in opposite directions to confuse the monster. However, Do Yun cannot run anymore because of his existing wound and chooses to give in to save Si Ho. When in hiding, Si Ho had held Do Yun’s hand and seen his past with both of them in it. It was them running away from Bulgasal in the forest in their past life. Thinking about that, Si Ho returns and offers herself to the monster. Despite the fact that she has no knowledge of their previous relationship, her love for him compels her to take the risk.

Sang Un and Hwal have reached the farm but cannot find them. When Sang Un senses the monster, she runs towards the monster alone and rescues Si Ho. She starts fighting the monster, but fortunately, Hwal finds them and kills the monster brutally. The monster, however, attacked Hwal’s eyes, making him temporarily blind. Hwal is wearing a blindfold over his eyes, just like his son, A-chan, did. Karma returns, and Hwal is paying for his deeds. All of them return home with a heavy heart. Their beloved auntie, Hye Suk, has died for no reason, and they cannot even pay their respects to her.

While everyone else is sad, Hwal is indifferent towards it because he has seen many deaths in his 600 years of life. Sang Un is skeptical of Hwal’s behavior. He took care of her even when she was her enemy, but declined to show any care for Hye Suk. He even tells Sang Un to leave with Si Ho and Do Yun and leave him on his own because they are becoming a hindrance between him and Eul Tae. When they leave, and Hwal is alone, he is seen repenting the loss of Hye Suk, remembering all the memories of her, from childhood to her old age. Hye Suk had grown on him, and he saw her as his daughter, even though he never said it out loud. Their last talk was about their fight when he hurt her by not calling her family, but she was his family all the while.

Kwon takes care of Hye Suk and receives a call from Ham, who tricks him into meeting Eul Tae. Eul Tae tells Kwon that the reason behind his father and sister’s deaths is Hwal, who is his real enemy. He has thrown his cards, and now it’s Kwon’s choice to go with Eul Tae or stick with Hwal. Remorsefully, Hwal tries to stab himself in the heart to ease the pain of Hye Suk’s death, but Sang Un comes back and stops him. She chooses to see the kinder side of Hwal and decides to stick with him, irrespective of the past and the future. What could have happened in the past, and what will happen when Sang Un remembers it all? We can only wait for the final episodes to reveal all.
