Buried Hearts on Disney+ is nostalgic in the sense that it feels like an old soap with the whole memory loss plot and over-dramatic romance. What’s funny is that even in this serious thriller, it somehow makes the time to be comical too. I thought there were some quite funny bits in this episode, but I digress. In episode 5, the big question we had was, “Is Dongju faking it?” However, I think episode 6 makes it clear that he really wasn’t able to remember anything. The ending of episode 6 was quite a shocking one, not only for Dongju but for us as an audience, too. Finally, it feels like this is a thriller and nobody is safe in this world. Episode 6 begins with Dongju’s kidnapping. As we suspected, Dr. Kang seems to be a key character. But by the end of the episode, it seems even her hypnosis didn’t work, and a much more drastic measure will have to be taken to bring Dongju back to reality. So, with that, let’s jump straight into the episode.
Spoiler Alert
Does Dongju Remember the Swiss Account Password?
Buried Hearts episode 6 begins with Dr. Kang panicking about Dongju being kidnapped and tortured to reveal the Swiss account password. After endless hours of torture, Dongju still doesn’t have an answer. In the end, Dongju pretends to be dead and then chokes out the men who were torturing him. There was also a man using a microphone to remind Dongju that he needed to reveal the Swiss account password. When Dongju steps out of the room, the man’s gone, and only the mic sits on the chair. The man reappears with chains in his hands, ready to strangle Dongju to death, despite Yeom telling him that he needs him alive. It’s Ildo who saves Dongju from the man and brings him back to the chairman. Yeom pretends he learned of Dongju’s kidnapping and informed Ildo to find him. The chairman says if those people wanted the account password, they should’ve kidnapped Guho, but Yeom says it should’ve been Yeom himself. Yeom even claims he’d never tell Dongju the password, of course, not revealing to the chairman that Dongju had changed the password. Then Ildo says he noticed a gunshot wound on Dongju’s stomach. He tells the chairman that someone tried to kill Dongju when he’s the one who held the gun, all in front of Yeom as if he doesn’t know the truth. The chairman says it’s only safe for Dongju to stay with them rather than go back to his own place, or even the hospital.
On the other hand, Eunnam brings Sister Agnes to the hospital, but of course, Dongju is nowhere to be found. Eunnam takes her back home, and the nun asks her to find Dongju. She then reveals that Dongju’s name as a child was Seung Hyeon (I knew it!), but after a few years of living with her, he completely forgot about that name, plus he’d already lost his childhood memories by then.
Ildo’s big plan is to get Yeom to give him 1 trillion won, because if Dongju gets his memories back, he will also remember that Ildo was the one who tried to kill him. I suppose the threat is that he will kill Dongju and Yeom would lose all the money, so instead he should give him half, and Ildo won’t do anything to Dongju. I can’t understand Ildo here, because he seems to like Dongju a lot, but he is also willing to kill him. I’m not sure if he’s tearing up because the boy means a lot to him or from jealous anger. Meanwhile, Secretary Gong visits Dongju and gives him the two raw eggs that he used to enjoy with the chairman. She thinks it could help bring his memories back, but all Dongju says is he can’t believe he liked it. Dongju then asks Secretary Gong if she was shocked to hear the name Seong Hyeon. She denies having been startled by the name, and she says she’s never heard it before. But Dongju doesn’t let it go; he says that she might have a good reason to hide the fact that she knows the name. This leaves the secretary in a bit of a mess, and when she steps out of the room, she takes Choi Deokhui’s name. This is Eunnam’s mom’s name, and now I’m really wondering if Dongju and Eunnam are half siblings. Why is this the new favorite plotline for K-dramas, though? Anyway, maybe he was Deokhui’s best friend’s son or something.
Does Dongju Get His Memories Back?
Dongju uses Ildo’s pull-up bar, and when Ildo shows up, he laughingly asks the older man if he used to let him use the gym before. Ildo tells him that he did no such thing, but he always looked down on Dongju when he used to walk by on the outside of the house looking in. Dongju then tells Ildo that he wants to discuss something with him that he can’t with anybody else. He reveals that he has a gut feeling that it was Ildo who shot him, and he can’t shake it off. Ildo tells Dongju that he wasn’t the guy who shot him, but that they used to be enemies who hated each other before the accident.
Finally, Ildo decides to take Dongju to Dr. Kang, who is a friend’s daughter, and get her to try hypnosis on Dongju. Yeom thinks this is a stupid idea and doesn’t believe in it. During the session, Dongju remembers being in a car in the passenger seat with a young girl in the back seat. He’s also terrified when he’s left alone in the room. Maybe he’s experiencing the accident again, but we don’t know for sure. Maybe Dongju had a younger sister, too, who died with his parents in said car accident, and maybe the Chois were responsible. On the other hand, Guho suggests that maybe shock would lead to Dongju remembering everything. Yeom thinks this is a great idea.
At the end of Buried Hearts episode 6, Eunnam drives Dongju to meet Sister Agnes. Just as they’re about to meet, Sister Agnes gets hit by a vehicle on the street right in front of Dongju and Eunnam. This is the biggest shock Dongju can experience, and it was clearly orchestrated by Yeom. It seems Yeom’s plan actually did work because we see a montage of things run through Dongju’s head, and I have a feeling now he remembers his entire life clearly, not just the parts he lived as Dongju. Unfortunately, it looks like Sister Agnes is dead in the preview of the next episode, but Dongju might still be pretending not to remember anything in front of Yeom. Now his great revenge plan will begin.
