The ending of Buried Hearts episode 8 implies that Dongju is about to wreak havoc after everything he’s been through. In the previous episode, we saw the man eating cookies with cinnamon in them just to prove to Yeom that he hasn’t got his memories back. Or was it to show him that he’s willing to risk his life just to prove to Yeom that he will do whatever it takes to defeat him? I don’t know how this works, though, because he could’ve basically just died eating those cookies, but maybe he’d kept some medication ready. Or maybe Dr. Kang is in the know somehow; I did think she and Dongju might know each other from before based on the previous episode. In episode 8, Dongju is rushed to the hospital even though Ildo never called an ambulance. It’s Eunnam’s son who makes the actual call. In the meanwhile, we get a little bit of the backstory of how the plan to put cinnamon in the cookies came together. Yeom knew Dongju was allergic since the last time he was hospitalized when he had a reaction.
Spoiler Alert
Why Can’t Eunnam Get A Divorce?
In episode 8, Yeom hopes for Seong Hyeon’s death specifically. He doesn’t refer to him as Dongju, but by his old name, which he shouldn’t really care about. In a flashback, we see Dongju visit Yeom’s place with Ildo, and Yeom gets furious about it. But Chairman Cha had sent a handwritten letter to Yeom with some gifts, basically telling him that Dongju was going to be his man from then on. I don’t think Huicheol and Dongju’s rivalry with each other was the first instance Yeom saw the boy. I have a feeling he had something to do with Dongju’s parents’ deaths. Maybe he killed Eunnam’s dad, too.
At present, Ildo and the chairman are in the hospital to check on Dongju. The chairman calls for Secretary Gong while they’re at the hospital, and Gukhui’s husband reminds him where they are. Ildo immediately catches onto this interaction and realizes that his father-in-law has dementia. Gukhui’s husband then tells him that the chairman wanted to keep it all a secret, so he hasn’t even discussed it with his own wife. Ildo tells him he did the right thing, but he should update him from now on. Yeom also visits the hospital to check for good news, but this is when Dongju’s breathing returns to normal, thanks to Dr. Kang.
Won-Bin and Madame Pi arrive at the hospital since she’s Dongju’s guardian. Before she leaves, Won-Bae gives Eunnam the mobile from that day on the yacht and a bundle wrapped in fabric, which she should open when she’s by herself. He tells her that there’s a video on the phone that she should watch, which is why he’s kept it all this time. But is this guy working for Dongju? I’m a little bit confused about how this happened. Back at home, Eunnam watches the video until Dongju tells her that he fixed her bracelet that was broken. She unfolds the bundle then and realizes it’s the bracelet he had held onto, even when he basically died. In a flashback, we see Dongju and Eunnam get their matching tattoos because Dongju wants Eunnam to forget about the scar on her wrist. She puts the bracelet back on and then later watches the rest of the video, realizing her father shot Dongju.
Meanwhile, Gukhui is sent to the prosecutor’s office for investigation for lobbying bank executives to let Daesan take over Yuseong Chemical. The chairman blames Yeom for this, but Yeom denies the allegations. On the other hand, Eunnam meets up with Huicheol in the middle of the day because she won’t be around at dinner time. This is because she wants a divorce, which he doesn’t plan on giving her easily. See, Huicheol just wants to one-up Dongju. It doesn’t make sense why he would want his seconds, so to speak. Plus, Eunnam is still madly in love with Dongju, so why would Huicheol want to be with her? Apparently, he genuinely likes her, but I don’t buy it. But there’s a problem. The prenup for Eunnam and Huicheol’s wedding has a hefty penalty for breach of contract, and of course, Ildo will not support her decision, so she’d have to pay it off herself. But what’s worse is that Huicheol wants a child, and Eunnam is leave him ready to leave him if they have a kid. I’m not sure why she’d agree to do it at all, but okay.
Eunnam begins her own investigation and finds CCTV footage from the day of Sister Agnes’ accident. Eunnam finds Guho in the video and notices he made eye contact with the driver of the truck, proving that it was Yeom’s doing. Eunnam then sends stills from both videos to Yeom as a threat. All she wants is to be free from the marriage without penalty. I wonder if Yeom doesn’t know that she’s not Ildo’s child, but that doesn’t make any sense at all.
What Will Happen To Eunnam?
Yeom goes to meet the President of the country, i.e., the Elder, to discuss the National Patriotism Fund. The two have some differences, specifically because they both talk about the matter quite selfishly, even though they want to do “good” for the country. It doesn’t end very well, and anyway, Yeom still doesn’t have the money, so I suppose he’s got to stall at least for a bit before he reveals everything Dongju did. But, by then, he wants to make Ildo the CEO, because he’s a guy who listens to him. On the other hand, the Chairman tells Ildo that he has planned on hastening Chief Choi’s appointment as the Vice President of the company. For Ildo to get that position, the chairman wants him to backstab Yeom because he’s his trusted man. Ildo then meets Chief Choi and tells him that the chairman has dementia, so it’s important for him to discuss everything about the company with Ildo himself first.
Back at home, Gukhui tries to open the safe, and she has the post-it with the passcode on it. But the passcode doesn’t work, and Ildo shows up behind her, giving her the fright of her life. She tells him she stole the passcode chit many days ago, which gives Ildo the hint he needs about Dongju having changed the passcode since his return to something only he knew.
At the end of Buried Hearts episode 8, both Eunnam’s and Dongju’s lives are in danger, thanks to Yeom. For Eunnam, he might want to disguise it as an accident, but for Dongju, he sends Ildo something to inject Dongju with to end all of the mess once and for all. Unfortunately, though, things don’t go as planned yet again because somehow, Dongju is able to fight off the man that tries to poison him. The episode ends with Dongju turning to the door after taking the man down and making eye contact with Ildo, yet again reminding him that he will come out on top after everything is over.
