Christmas is near and Every Cartoon Character is getting its own Christmas Special. It’s a fantasy fulfilled for a fantasy character to have their own movie, Captain Underpants Mega Blissmas.
The story of this Christmas special revolves around the central characters of the original series, Harold and George and their own superhero, Captain Underpants. For viewers who haven’t seen the series, Harold and George invented Captain Underpants to save the world, for their own amusement. Captain Underpants in the series is their school principal himself, who with a snap turns into a superhero, like Clark Kent and Superman role-shift.
In the Christmas special episode, Captain Underpants Mega Blissmas made into a 46-minute television film, Harold and George are not receptive to the idea of an old traditional Christmas pageant. To them, it is boring. George says, “If Christmas was more like our comic it would be better.” they want to ultra modernize the tradition, instead of red bows on gifts and trees, they prefer laser shows projecting from every decoration. Instead of ugly red sweaters, they favor cool Christmas capes and above all, not a fat Santa, but a Jacked New Santa. Hence, it is these two kids’ imagination spreading its wings and adding spice to the otherwise boring Christmas.
Harold and George decide to turn Christmas into a “Blissmas” starting with a pageant in their school. The stage show involves a transformed version of Christmas with dragons and robots and “Merry Christmas” changes into “Mega Blissmas.” It is a hilarious commentary on traditional un-bending customs. Though to the parents of the kids, it was a disaster and an embarrassment. George’s mother tells him, “Blissmas is for you, but Christmas is for everyone” and that is why everyone is so sceptical of their futuristic idea of Christmas pageant.
Harold and George plan time travel using “Melvin’s Timetoad”, their geeky friends Time Machine. The ploy to change the traditional Christmas from the roots. They time travel to the past, to the North Pole so that their own idea of Christmas becomes everyone’s idea. But will they be able to do it? Or will it be pleasant to have robots running around on Christmas? Watch the flick to explore their imagination.
“Captain Underpants Mega Blissmas” cracks some stomach-grabbing one-liners. It’s a Christmas movie and thus it ought to give a message in the end. Harold and George learn in the end, that imposing one’s individual imagination for mass acceptance, will also rob the uniqueness of the imagination, because now, everyone shares the same imagination and no one has anything unique to offer.
The journey, the mishaps and the goof-ups through which Harold and George learn their lesson are really entertaining. Their chemistry is as amazing as they are in the television series. The goofy Captain Underpants has little role to play with comedy in the movie, but he is a treat to watch, as always.
There are certain moments in “Captain Underpants Mega Blissmas” that are too fast-paced for a younger audience. The dialogues are speeded up or hurried and thus the humour and information are amiss. The television series has a balanced pace for all groups of audience. Except for that, every frame and punch hits the bulls-eye.
