We came across many interesting characters in Netflix’s thriller, City of Shadows, while Rebeca and Milo were out on their investigation to find the killer of Edward Pinto. The two detectives had a hard time figuring out who the killer could be and what could be their motives behind killing such influential men. So, let’s look at the characters who crossed paths with Milo and Rebeca and see which of them had a key role to play in the entire murder mystery.
Spoiler Alert
Rebeca Garrido
Rebeca was a criminal behavioral analyst, and she had come to Barcelona to work on the Edward Pinto disappearance case, as her expertise was needed on it. Rebeca seemed like a very calm and composed individual, and she knew that in order to solve the case, she needed to set her ego aside and work with the best people. I say that because she could have easily taken offense after she met Milo for the very first time. He was not an easy candidate to deal with, but Rebeca knew that he was a good investigator, and she needed him on her side. Moreover, I believe Rebeca could relate to Milo in more than one way. Rebeca’s mother had passed away of a terminal illness, and she was still coping with the grief of losing a loved one. Rebeca was a trustworthy person you could count on. She was one of those people who might not share your happiness but would definitely stand with you in times of trouble.
Milo Malart
Milo has a knack for noticing details that others couldn’t. That was probably why he was so good at what he did. But after losing his nephew and getting separated from his wife, Milo had gone through a rough patch. He was always a passionate man, but he never lost his cool like he did with his superior, Singla. Milo was suspended from service, but then later reinstated by Judge Susane, who also happened to be his friend, believing that they needed his expertise on such a sensitive matter. Milo was a mentally strong guy, as even after dealing with such severe anxiety attacks, he kept going, and he didn’t stop until he solved the case.
Judge Susane
Judge Susane was somebody who trusted Milo more than anybody else. She didn’t only believe in his potential, she was also very good friends with him. I believe had it not been for her, he would have definitely lost his job. Susane knew that she needed to find Edward Pinto and Felix Torrens before the public lost trust in the authorities. Never had Susane imagined that she could also be the perpetrators’ target. Susane got abducted by the perpetrators, and had it not been for Rebeca and Milo, I don’t think she would have been alive.
Singla
Singla was the officer who was assaulted by Milo. It was established from the very beginning that Singla didn’t like Milo, but the best part about him was that he didn’t let his personal bias get in the way of his work. Had Singla wanted, he could have put obstacles in Milo’s way and made sure that he wasn’t able to do his job properly. But he did not do such a thing. In fact, when the department chief decided to suspend Milo once again, it was Singla who came to his aid. Singla allowed Milo to keep his badge and his gun since he was very close to making a breakthrough. Singla risked his own job just because he knew that Milo was good at what he did.
Edward Pinto
Edward Pinto owned one of the biggest construction companies in Spain. In fact, when the 1992 Olympic Games were organized in Barcelona, his company was given the authority to build roads and other infrastructure. The company carried out a cleaning act, wherein the city was made beautiful, but several people lost their homes. Pinto didn’t care where the slum dwellers went as long as he and his people made billions in profit. There were many influential people on Pinto’s payroll, which was why his corrupt activities never came to light. The man was seen as a leader who made the 1992 Olympics a success. But nobody cared about those who didn’t have anywhere to go after their homes were destroyed.
Felix Torrens
Felix Torrens was yet another corrupt man who ran various juvenile centers and other charitable trusts in the city. He was also portrayed as a humanitarian who worked selflessly for the cause of underprivileged people, but in reality he was a lecherous and sick man who had ruined the lives of many kids. He molested the girls who came to live in his juvenile facility and tortured those who raised a voice against him. Felix believed that he was invincible and that nobody would come to know about the crimes he had committed in the past. Felix, together with Pinto, was burnt alive, as there were people out there who wanted to take revenge on them and make them pay in the most horrifying manner.
Helena and Hector
Helena and Hector, the siblings, were victims of a capitalist society. Their mother left them at a very young age, and then their father passed away when he couldn’t bear the trauma of seeing his house getting demolished. Helena and Hector burnt down Torrens’ juvenile facility, and then they waited for years to make the perfect plan. They decided to abduct those they held responsible for their plight and give them the most painful death. Their plan was to kill every monster who held office during the 1992 Olympics, because they wanted the state to realise that they couldn’t oppress people and call it progress. Both Helena and Hector took their own lives and put an end to a tragic life that they didn’t deserve.
Mauricio Navarro
Mauricio Navarro was a journalist, and he described himself as a voice of the nation; he literally just worked for his own benefit. Mauricio got exclusive footage from Hector, and he released it on his channel. He thought that he would benefit from that relationship with Hector, but he was extremely wrong. Mauricio questioned Milo’s credibility on national television, and the man literally had no conscience. Uncovering the truth was the least of his concerns, and he only focused on sensationalizing the news and getting more viewership for his channel. Mauricio, together with the police chief Benet Bastos, was one of those corrupt people on Pinto and Torrens’ payroll. They played a crucial role in hiding the truth and making sure the reputations of those corrupt businessmen were not tarnished.
Hugo and Sara
Hugo was Milo’s elder brother, whereas Sara was Hugo’s wife. Hugo suffered from acute mental disorders, and his conditions had worsened after the death of his son. Hugo blamed Milo for his son’s death, though the latter had no role to play in it. In fact, Milo was in the toughest phase of his life because he loved his nephew, and he shared a very close bond with him. Sara was a sensible woman, and she knew that her husband needed help. There came a time when Sara realized that if they didn’t intervene then Hugo might end up hurting himself. That was when Sara and Milo got Hugo hospitalized in a mental clinic and prayed for his speedy recovery.
