Netflix’s ‘Devil May Cry’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Is White Rabbit Dead?

Published

Devil May Cry’s ending was all about stopping White Rabbit from breaking the barrier between Earth and Hell with the help of the Sword of Sparda, the two pieces of the amulet, and the blood of Dante and his presumed dead brother, Vergil. White Rabbit had everything in his possession, except Dante’s blood, and Mary wanted to keep it that way, so as to safeguard Earth from the worst specimens of Hell. But when she was overwhelmed by White Rabbit’s demonic soldiers, Dante had no option but to step in. They managed to kill all the demons under White Rabbit’s command, and the human-turned-demon-sympathizer also seemingly plummeted to his death. Vice President Baines and Darkcom arrived on the rooftop to take stock of the situation and decide how they were going to spin this whole fiasco so as to make the events that had transpired palatable to the general public. However, unbeknownst to all of them, White Rabbit had one last trick to pull out of his proverbial hat. So, did Dante and Mary save the planet? Was Vergil actually alive? And what can we expect from a potential second season of Devil May Cry? Let’s find out.

Spoiler Alert

White Rabbit Goes Berserk

Baines was aware of the fact that Mary’s act of heroism must’ve gotten to her head. So, he decided to humble her by reminding her how she had failed to deliver the amulet. Sensing that Baines wasn’t as good-hearted as Mary claimed he was, Dante lied to him that White Rabbit had taken the amulet, even though it was actually in Dante’s possession. On that note, Dante tried to take everybody’s leave and head home, but Baines stopped him in his tracks, because he intended to use Dante’s demon hybrid powers in his holy war against Hell. As Mary and the soldiers under Baines’ command prepared to apprehend Dante, White Rabbit showed up in his new and grotesque avatar. Back in the day, White Rabbit left his abusive foster parents behind on Earth to stay with his found family in Makai (or Hell).

As the atmosphere in that realm got worse because of Mundus and his demon armies, White Rabbit devised a way to rescue the Makaians who wanted to get away from Hell and live peacefully. He brought them to Earth, as the air here was still breathable, and the Makaians stayed hidden there. However, Mary and her team of Darkcom mercenaries discovered the place where the Makaians were and attacked them with everything they had. White Rabbit survived, but he required a special concoction of demon and human blood to stay alive. The contraption on his chest maintained the balance between the two kinds of blood. However, in a bid to retrieve the amulet and also get Dante’s blood, thereby completing the list of items to break the barrier between Earth and Hell, White Rabbit consumed way too much demon blood and turned into a monster.

White Brings Hell To Earth

While Baines and Anders (with White Rabbit’s portal opening machine) escaped in a helicopter, Dante, Mary, Enzo, and some soldiers stayed back to fight White Rabbit. It was an absolute bloodbath as the crazed and mutated White Rabbit slaughtered everyone in his vicinity. Enzo perished, and it was a really heartbreaking moment for Dante because, despite Enzo’s duplicitous nature, he liked the guy, and he took Enzo’s death to heart and unleashed his demonic side. Still, Dante, even with some help from Mary, was no match for White Rabbit, and he ended up uniting the Sword of Sparda with the amulet and the blood of Vergil and Dante. Yes, it was at this moment that Dante learned that Vergil was alive and conspiring with White Rabbit to break the barrier between Hell and Earth.

So, 2000 years ago (that’s 2 millennia, by the way), a demon named Sparda rebelled against Mundus in order to stop the tyrant from destroying Earth and Makai. Since he couldn’t kill Mundus, he created the aforementioned barrier between Earth and Makai and left his homeland to live on Earth with his wife, Eva, and two sons, Dante and Vergil, while all the Makaians languished under Mundus’ rule. Eventually, the family was torn apart by Mundus and his troops. Sparda went missing. Eva died. It was assumed that Vergil had died too. And Dante grew up on the streets of America and became the greatest demon hunter out there. Now, not much is known about how Vergil survived, why he became Mundus’ subject, and why he’s working with White Rabbit to break the barrier. But it’s evident that without his help, White Rabbit couldn’t have fulfilled his mission to bring Hell to Earth, albeit momentarily. Yeah, for a brief period of time, demons began roaming the streets of New York, thanks to White Rabbit.

Season 2 Expectations

As White Rabbit celebrated his win, Mary shot the contraption on his chest with one of her demon-killing bullets. In Devil May Cry season 1’s ending, while White Rabbit struggled to function properly, Dante turned into a demon, which gave him the power to pull out the Sword of Sparda, which White Rabbit had plunged into his chest, and he killed White Rabbit. He detached the bloodied amulet from the sword, and that re-established the barrier. Dante knew that he couldn’t have saved the planet without Mary’s help. So, he wanted to partner up with her and go on a mission to reunite with Vergil. Sadly, Mary was still loyal to Baines and Darkcom. Hence, she incapacitated Dante and delivered him at Darkcom’s doorstep, where he was put in some kind of a cryosleep. I guess Mary will regret this decision, as she saw Baines using White Rabbit’s portal-making machine (that he had snatched from Anders) to lay waste to the underworld and its denizens. Once a major chunk of Makai was cleared, Baines brought in the Uroboros Corporation, led by Arius, to establish their mining facility in Hell. Earth’s natural resources had already been exhausted by these capitalist villains. Therefore, it made sense for them to invade the neighboring realm and suck it dry. For how long, though? I’m not sure.

If Mundus is as formidable as everyone says he is, I don’t think he is going to just sit on the sidelines and watch a bunch of mortals take over his realm while disallowing him from extending his dominion. It’s only a matter of time before he gets up from his throne and teaches everyone associated with Uroboros a lesson. In the meantime, it looks like Vergil will take up White Rabbit’s job of rescuing the Makaians who have been detained in the Uroboros Detention Facility. I don’t know if Vergil knows whether Dante is alive or not. If he does, maybe he is going to join hands with Mary and spring him from his icy prison. Why is Mary going to work with Vergil? Well, I am assuming that she is going to come to her senses and realize that Baines isn’t the hero she thinks he is. He is a bootlicker of Arius, and he has been doing his bidding so far. Also, he is a religious bigot who doesn’t see the Makaians as a sentient species that deserves basic rights. He sees them as these ungodly creatures who should be punished for existing. As soon as Mary sees Baines for what he truly is, I am hoping that she is going to work with Vergil and Dante to bring an end to his and Arius’ tyrannical reign. However, the situation isn’t that simple because, maybe, the Uroboros Corporation is the only thing that can keep Mundus at bay. So, yeah, Mary, Vergil, Dante, and even Anders (if he is alive, that is) have to make some tough decisions in order to achieve some kind of balance between Makai and Earth. To be honest, at this point, their best bet is if Sparda returns from the dead or exile and helps the heroes beat the sapien as well as the demonic villains. Anyway, those are my thoughts on the ending of Devil May Cry. What are your opinions on the same? Let me know in the comments section below.
