‘Dexter Resurrection’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Is Leon Prater Dead?

Published

Dexter: Resurrection‘s ending was emotional. I know many of you might have expected some grand or shocking revelations, but the Season 1 finale was more about Dex exacting revenge for his fallen pal, Angel Batista, and bidding him a final goodbye. The final episode also reveals the identity of the most talked about serial killer of Dexter: Resurrection, that is, the infamous New York Ripper. I know the whole internet theorized that it was either Leon Prater or Dex’s landlord, Blessing Kamara, but unfortunately, it is neither of them. I think you can already see how excited I am to break down the ending of Dexter: Resurrection episode 10 for you. So, with a major spoiler warning, let’s jump straight into it.

Dex killed Leon Prater

Killing Prater wasn’t the first thing on Dex’s wish list, but if you ask me, I think Prater invited his own demise, quite literally. In the season finale, Prater wanted Dex to die of thirst, but Dex luckily found Batista’s phone and called up his son, Harrison, to come to the Gala and rescue him from Prater’s vault. Dex’s initial plan was to steal the files on the potential serial slayers that Prater had hidden inside his trophy room. But why? Well, so that our very own apex predator would have a list of new serial killers to hunt down and satisfy his urges. He also stole Ronald Schmidt, aka Red’s file, because it had Dex’s pictures in it, and he didn’t want the police to arrest him for the crimes of an amateur like Red. It would have been quite embarrassing. However, as Dex was about to leave the premises, Prater spotted Harrison sneaking out of the Gala. Prater knew something was wrong, and therefore brought Harrison to his vault at gunpoint. And as he had expected, Dex wasn’t there. Harrison had helped him escape. So, Prater called Dex and asked him to come back to the cage if he wanted to see his son alive, and because the show is all about father-son relationships, and Dex couldn’t let another serial killer hurt his family, he had no other option but to give in to Prater’s demand.

So here we are, back to square one. Prater wanted to shoot Harrison because he had finally gotten a taste of “what it’s like to kill someone.” Prater wanted Dex to be witness to his first proper, non-impulsive kill. The impulsive one was Batista. However, if you hear Prater’s words carefully, then you might understand that in this scene, he already gave it away. Batista was his first kill, which means Prater wasn’t the New York Ripper. The Ripper has claimed 22 victims so far in the Dexter universe. Unfortunately, Dex didn’t give Prater the satisfaction of another kill and hinted to Harrison to use “the protection” he had given to him in episode 9. Dex signalled Harrison to stab Prater with a dose of Etorphine M-99 in the heart, the same spot Harrison had fired a  shot at his dad at the end of Dexter: New Blood. And with Prater down, we all know how he’s going to meet his end, right?

In Dexter: Resurrection‘s ending, Prater, lying on the kill table, tried his best to convince Dex to spare his life, but to no avail. He had shot Batista in front of his eyes and pointed a gun at his son’s head. Prater fit Dex’s code, and therefore he stabbed him in the chest and ended his life for everyone’s good. However, Dex did break the pattern this time. He didn’t take a blood sample from Prater, because unlike his other kills, he didn’t want to remember Prater at all. And while the people in the Gala were dancing to loud music and donating money to the cause, Dex chopped up Prater’s corpse and packed his belongings to leave the place. Before walking out, he put the wrong codes into the vault’s security system so it would trigger the alarm and bring in all the cops to the trophy room so that they could find Batista’s body and the gun (that had Prater’s fingerprints on it) that killed him.

Det. Wallace Found The Ripper File

I think most of you would want to know what Claudette Wallace, the ace homicide detective, was going to make of the crime scene. See, before leaving, Dex had doused the vault in bleach, which means Wallace wouldn’t be able to find any other fingerprints except for the ones on the murder weapon. Hence, she would surmise that Batista, obsessed with serial killers, especially the Bay Harbor Butcher, broke into Prater’s vault during the Gala. And as soon as the eccentric billionaire found out about it, he quickly came running to his trophy room to confront the retired captain and shot him when he threatened to expose his serial killer fetish to the world. This makes Prater a cop killer, and they will put him on the most wanted list. But this is not really the interesting bit. I am interested in knowing if the NYPD will still take the money raised by Prater’s fundraising campaign. That’s some 22.8 million dollars. Tough choice to make there, right?

Nevertheless, it was a very emotional moment for me and most of the fans of the show when Wallace picked up Batista’s fedora and put it on his dead body, as it was “a part of him.” She couldn’t let Batista leave without his hat, and it really tells you how much Wallace cares for an officer, even though she never really worked with him. It’s a really touching gesture. And last but not least, while the officers and forensics were investigating the crime scene, Wallace’s partner, Det. Melvin Oliva, showed her Prater’s most prized possession, the Ripper’s murder weapon, a T-style manhole crowbar. And in the large piles of confidential files that Dex had pulled out of a drawer, they found the Ripper’s file, with his name written on it. His name is Don Framt. Have we heard of him before? I cannot recall, but do let me know in the comments below. Also, we know that the Ripper still makes phone calls to the families of his victims to torment them with the details of his crimes, which means Don isn’t dead, and Wallace will do everything in her power to find him and arrest him so his victims can finally get the justice they deserve.

Dex Took The Getaway

In Dexter: Resurrection‘s ending, after killing Prater, Dex spotted a photograph hanging on the wall, in which Prater was standing with NYPD commissioner Franklin McNamara in front of Prater’s private charter, the Getaway. McNamara’s closeness with Prater is one of the reasons why the NYPD commissioner won’t let any detective dig up too much information on the missing billionaire, and will try to close down the investigation as quickly as possible. However, that’s a concern for season 2. As for the finale, Dex took Prater’s private boat on a little detour. You see, even the name of the charter is quite a tell. The cop investigating Dex was murdered, which obviously makes him one of the suspects, and therefore it’s better for him to lay low until things cool down.

The closing shot of Dexter: Resurrection‘s finale made it abundantly clear that Dex will definitely return to New York City, because as he told us, he’s not built for solitude. Even people like him need to belong, and Dex cannot disappear again, leaving behind his friend, Blessing Kamara, and his only family, Harrison. But wait. Where’s Dex going, really? So, we all know that Dex has some unfinished business with Al Walker, the Ponytail Killer, one of Prater’s pet serial killers who escaped his wrath. I guess Dex is headed to Wisconsin, where Al lives with his family, under the guise of a family man. But I am not saying Dex is going to Wisconsin by boat; however, he is indeed going to use Prater’s charter to set up a luxury kill room for himself, in case he hunts down more serial killers in New York City. In the final shot, we saw Dex holding a bunch of other files with names such as Jawsplitter, Midnight Mangler, and Yonkers Slayer, who are all his potential victims after he’s done with Rapunzel (the Ponytail Killer). Who these active serial slayers are and where they are stationed, I don’t know, but hey, I am not the one keeping tabs on the serial killers. Well, we’ll find out more about them in season 3.

Charley Left For Good

One of the biggest revelations of Dexter: Resurrection‘s finale was Charley’s real name. I am kidding. But yes, I didn’t know that her name is Charlotte Brown. Okay, so inside the vault, Dex even found a file on Charley, and he didn’t waste a moment telling Charley that her employer had been keeping tabs on her and would have no qualms exposing her if she ever went against him. Dex finally figured out that it was Charley who paid an officer to kill Mia Lapierre, Lady Vengeance, and stage her death as a suicide. He threatened to expose Charley, but she was done playing games with Prater and his crazy guests. She told Dex that she was leaving, and if he ever dared leak those photos, then she would hunt down Harrison and give him the most brutal death possible. Well, if Dex took Charley’s threats seriously, then I believe he even took her file with him before leaving the penthouse so that the authorities wouldn’t be able to find out the truth about Mia’s death. This means Charley’s secret is safe with Dex, or that’s what I really want to believe. However, Charley didn’t want to take any chances, and therefore quickly packed her bags and left her current house with her ailing mother. She had bought back her home in Amherst (either the city in Massachusetts or a suburb of Buffalo). I guess she purchased her family house with Prater’s money, and will be spending the rest of her life in peace there. She will also tell her mother the truth about whom she worked for and the things she did for him. However, the real question here is, what about her mother’s medical expenses? Who’s going to pay for all that now that Prater’s dead? I think Charley will find a way, somehow, or maybe she will let her mother take her last breath in the family home. The thing is, Charley cannot keep her alive forever, and she has to die someday, but what better way to leave this world than at the place where you spent your whole life? Just saying.

Harrison Seemed Happy

In Dexter: Resurrection‘s ending, Dex and Harrison parted ways for a while. Dex left for Wisconsin, while Harrison returned to his new girlfriend, Gigi’s flat, to wrap up his own unfinished business. Don’t ask me; you have seen the episode as well. I think Harrison’s life is going to be peaceful for a bit, considering his thrill-seeking father will be away for some time. He will be able to focus on his studies, and I think the next time we meet him, he will have already enrolled in the criminology program, working hard to become a part of the legal system and serve justice just like his father and his grandfather. However, there’s one thing I am still thinking about: if Harrison attended the Gala, then the security camera might have captured him, right? And we all know that Harrison had been acting very strange, trying his best to hide so that Prater or Wallace didn’t spot him at the party. But what if Wallace, while checking this very security footage, sees Harrison hiding behind a plant? Isn’t that going to raise suspicions? Obviously, it will. And Wallace already has Harrison at the top of her suspect list. So, she will not let this matter go without interrogating him, which may open another can of worms. But that’s a story for another day. So wrapping up, these are my thoughts on Dexter: Resurrection‘s ending, but do let me know what you feel about it. Should Michael C. Hall get an Emmy for this? Let me know.
