In Dexter: Resurrection episode 3, the titular character sets a trap for the serial killer who has been targeting rideshare drivers in New York City. In the previous episode, Dex got himself a UCar registration to find out more about the mysterious killer, who turned out to be an IT guy named Ronald “Red” Schmidt, working for a cybersecurity company. However, before making the move, Dex wanted to know more about his prey and therefore started stalking him outside his office building. He saved the life of a driver, who was going to be Red’s next target, but Dex knew that Red wouldn’t be able to control his urges for long, and therefore Dex needed to take action against him soon. So, how did Dex pull it off? Let’s find out.
Spoiler Alert
Dex Finds Red’s Address
Blessing Kamara, Dex’s landlord and his only friend in New York City, had invited Dex to dinner, where Blessing’s wife, Constance, suddenly brought up Dex’s past life in Miami, which threw him for a loop. There was no way Constance could have known about Dexter’s history, which made him curious how exactly she found out that he used to live in Miami. This was when she told Dex about this website called SafeHaven Verify, which provided background screening services for 75 dollars. Well, Dex put in his 75 dollars to find Red’s whereabouts, and the next day, when he left for work, Dex broke into his house, the same one to which Charley had paid a visit in episode 1. Here, at Red’s apartment, we didn’t see anything new; however, Dex did like the location of Red’s place. The building didn’t have any cameras, no noisy neighbors, and the room had thick walls. It was a perfect place for his “killing room.” He had rented Blessing’s basement, but it didn’t seem like a safe place to chop up bodies, right? So yes, Dex was going to use Red’s place to slice up his victims, and ironically, his first victim in New York City happened to be none other than the former owner of the kill room, Ronald Schmidt.
Dex Kills Red
Dex, pretending to be a customer in dire need of some IT help, contacted Bridge Data Network and asked for Red to pay him a visit. Basically, he was setting a blind date with Red, without Red knowing that it was going to be his last day on the planet. Before the big night, Dex, using his alias, Patrick Bateman (I am sure you’re familiar with the reference), ordered his most lethal weapon, a box of etorphine vials, to immobilize his target. He had prepared an injection for Red, and when he sat in his taxi and tried to attack him, Dex injected the opioid in his system to neutralize the threat. During this time, Dex had also been wearing an aluminum piece under a high-neck sweater to protect his neck from Red’s garrote.
In the end, Dex brought Red to the killing room, wrapped him up with plastic, and finally woke him up. Dex initiated the conversation, telling Red that he’d destroyed families and made kids orphans through his acts. In his defense, Red explained his motives for targeting the rideshare drivers. His father had spent his entire life savings on a taxi medallion, but then these UrCar drivers entered the game, and their livelihoods tanked. Red’s father suffered irrecoverable loss and therefore jumped into the East River. And to add to that, his head was severed from his body by the same dredgers that went looking for him in the water. Throughout his life, Red blamed those rideshare drivers for his father’s death and started killing them to avenge his old man. Well, Dex wasn’t interested in these reasons, as he had heard hundreds of stories like his over the years, and he knew that it was just a matter of choice. One could either choose to be a vigilante like Dex or a serial killer like Red. He made it clear that he was going to kill him. A frightened Red confused Dex with the person who had broken into his house to leave an invitation with his trophies, along with a box of money. It was Charley actually, but Red thought it was Dex and he had come back to take the money he had left. The entire thing made Dex really curious, and therefore, after stabbing Red to death, he opened Red’s backpack to find the invitation he was talking about. It was a letter from Charley’s employer, who had invited all like-minded serial killers for a dinner party. Well, it did make Dex intrigued.
Dex Gets Rid Of Red’s Body
After killing Red, Dex, for the first time in a long while, chopped someone’s body up and cut it into pieces, sorting them into black garbage bags. He then brought everything to an isolated and dilapidated neighborhood, where he burned his corpse inside an old incinerator building. But while Red’s body was burning, Dex suddenly remembered the words in the letter, which mentioned that a thumbprint was required for entry. Dex quickly removed Red’s arm from the incinerator and chopped off his thumb so he could use it to crash the dinner party and meet the “like-minded” individuals who shared similar passions. You see, Dex is a hunter, and this dinner party sounds like nothing less than a hunting ground where he will see the faces of all the potential serial killers thriving in New York City, keeping Dex busy for a long time. So yes, Dex is going to a party in the next episode.
Harrison Dodges a Bullet
In Dexter: Resurrection episode 3, Claudette Wallace interrogated Harrison Morgan, the hotel’s bellboy, because he was the last person who had seen the victim, Ryan Foster, alive. Harrison told Wallace that on the night of his murder, Ryan had asked him to help him carry the woman, whom Ryan called his wife, to his room, and then Harrison went off. He lied to the detective that he left the hotel and went to a bar where he met a girl with whom he ended up spending the night. However, when Wallace asked for a contact for his alibi, Harrison told her that they didn’t exchange numbers, which made Wallace more suspicious of Harrison and his conduct. She once again went through the crime scene and evidence to ascertain how the killer might have ended up killing Ryan and how exactly he dumped his body. She believed the perpetrator was Harrison, who found himself in a situation he couldn’t back off from. He knew that Ryan was going to rape his victim, so Harrison tried to save the girl’s life, but Ryan attacked him, and in the heat of the moment, Harrison killed him. She called Harrison for another interrogation, where Wallace narrated everything that actually took place on the night of Ryan’s murder. Harrison just sat there, motionless and expressionless, thinking of a way to escape the mess. In the end, Wallace told him that she and her partner knew that Harrison didn’t intend to kill Ryan, and if he would cooperate with the police, then they would consider the case a justifiable homicide instead of first-degree murder, but Harrison had no desire to go to prison, at least not for killing someone like Ryan. He quickly confessed to the detectives that he lied about his date. He didn’t actually leave the hotel, which was why none of the CCTV cameras captured him walking out of the premises. He told them that he didn’t have a place of his own and therefore used to stay in one of the empty rooms at night. And this time around, he had a real alibi to corroborate with his story.
The episode hinted at the fact that Elsa Rivera, one of Harrison’s coworkers at the Empire Hotel, might have feelings for Harrison. Well, that was what Dex figured out when he saw them sitting in a restaurant from a distance. Every night, while Elsa was away for her shift, Harrison would take time to look after her kid, and from the looks of it, it seemed like Harrison had a soft spot for Elsa too. He didn’t want to use Elsa as an alibi, but he had no other option left. She was his only escape. In the end, the detectives confirmed his alibi with Elsa, and she told them she would let him sleep in the empty rooms as he was homeless. So, is Dex out of trouble now? Well, I think not. Wallace won’t stop until she’s found the culprit. I believed that Dex would frame Red for Ryan’s murder, but it seems unlikely. In short, Wallace’s hunt for the killer is going to stretch for longer than I imagined.
Angel Batista Is Coming To New York
In the previous episode, Batista had asked Teddy, the new sheriff, to put Dex’s truck under surveillance so he could find out where Dex was headed. In episode 3, Teddy told Batista that they had gotten a hit on Dex’s truck, and that he was in New York City. As soon as Batista heard the words, he put in his retirement form at the MPD. His friends were not exactly sure why Batista was leaving all of a sudden, but he assured them they would find out soon enough. It’s quite obvious that he’s headed to NYC to follow Dex and gather evidence against him. He already suspects him to be a serial killer and cannot shake off those doubts, and therefore Batista yearns for closure more than anyone else. We can expect a confrontation between the two in the later episodes, and if that happens, then Dex will have no other option but to kill Batista.
