‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Episode 8 Recap: Will Angel Batista Get Arrested?

Published

In the previous episode of Dexter: Resurrection, Angel Batista, Dex’s former colleague and close friend, showed up uninvited to his landlord’s house to dig up more information about Dex’s new life. However, Dex knew what Angel was up to, and therefore he took him away before he could spill any more secrets about his past life and call Dex a serial killer in front of his new landlord, Blessing Kamara, and his family. As Dex drove Angel to the middle of nowhere, he threatened him to stay away from him and his son, but Angel made it clear that he was not going to back off so easily. Before leaving Dex’s car, Angel left his AirPods behind so he could track Dex and follow him around. In episode 8, Angel used the tracker to trace all the locations where Dex spends his time. That brought him to the realization that Dax was a man of routine. He always ate at his usual diners and spent a considerable amount of time at his basement apartment. In short, Angel was basically waiting for Dex to break the pattern and slip up so he could catch him red-handed, but the main question here is whether he will finally be able to get his hands on any incriminating evidence against the Bay Harbor Butcher? Let’s find out.

Spoiler Alert

Al Runs Away

Dex had come to NYC to look after his son, Harrison, and keep him safe, but shortly after his arrival, he came across Leon Prater’s serial killer club and infiltrated the group to befriend the psychopaths so he could take them out one by one. Over the past few episodes, Dex had killed almost everybody, except Al, the Ponytail Killer, who was the last person on his hit list. However, before Dex could pull off the job, Al left town. He had earlier told Dex that he was going to watch a performance of Hamilton and they could catch up after the musical had ended, but when Dex called him later that night, Al told him that he was already on his way to Wisconsin. I mean, he did give a reason for his early departure, but I believe he had a feeling that he was going to die next, and he didn’t want to take any chances, which was why he left. Dex told him that they could meet sometime in Wisconsin, but Al wasn’t interested in mixing his personal life with his serial killing adventures, and shortly after their conversation, he threw away his phone, which meant Dex had no other way to reach Al. The prey didn’t fall for his bait and fled for his life, leaving Dex with a bitter taste in his mouth. Dex was really excited to lay down Al on his “kill table” and add his blood to his collection. He had even found the perfect spot to kill him: a family-owned salon near Times Square, but things didn’t materialize. Maybe he can kill the Ponytail Killer the next time he shows up in town or makes it to the news? But for now, his chapter has come to a close.

Everyone’s Excited For The Gala

I suppose you already know that Leon Prater has been organizing a gala for the NYPD officers who got injured in the line of duty. It’s just one of many events the eccentric billionaire organizes to build his image as a philanthropist, while behind closed doors, he’s just a sick maniac who loves to hang around serial killers. Nevertheless, the interesting thing about his Gala is that almost all the characters in the show have spoken about it. In a way, all of these central characters are connected to the Gala, be it Harrison, Det. Claudette, or Leon Prater. The Gala would be held at the Empire Hotel, which means Harrison’s going to be present there. Det. Claudette and her colleagues have been invited, so they are going to be there too. What we have to see here is how Dex is going to be pulled into it. Will Prater ask him to be a guest? I am not sure, but what I am quite certain of is that something grand is going to happen at this Gala. I have a feeling that we may have a final confrontation between Prater and Dex at the Gala, and you already know who’s going to end up dead.

Blessing feels betrayed

In episode 6, shortly after his mother’s death, Blessing shared a very dark secret about his past with his new friend, Dex. He told him that when he was a child, he was forced to join the Revolutionary United Front as a soldier, and he did unspeakable things for them. He even killed a person, something he regrets till this day. It was his mother who became his guiding light and brought him to the US to save him from the horrors of the past. Dex believed that Blessing’s family knew about his past, which was why when his daughter, Joy, was quite confused about her dad not letting her move away with her fiancé, Sam, to California, Dex told her about the “child soldier” thing. I mean, Dex was just trying to help Blessing so his daughter would solve her father’s dilemma, but his revelation made things worse. Joy was heartbroken to find out that her father hid a secret about his past life from his family but confided in a man he had met two weeks ago. Later, when Joy called her father to ask about it, Blessing connected the dots. He told Dex that he trusted him with his secret because he knew he wouldn’t judge him, but by telling it to his daughter, he had ruined his relationship with her. She started to see him as a monster who had killed a person, and things were not going to be the same as before. Well, at this point, a normal person would have tried explaining himself, but Dex is a sociopath who doesn’t understand such emotions well, so he didn’t feel guilty about what he had done, he had other matters to attend to.

Dex Finds Another Target

During their brief meeting, Harrison told his father about his friend, Elsa Rivera’s foulmouthed landlord, Vinny Valente, who had refused to fix the black mold issue in her apartment, because of which her young kid’s asthma had flared up. Harrison believed that he shouldn’t have talked to Vinny, as he only rubbed his ego the wrong way, and now he was just refusing to do any work on the apartment. This was when Dex told Harrison he could try to talk to him, and maybe he would be able to convince him. But things didn’t turn out as Dex expected. He went to Vinny’s office, but he refused to meet him or even have a decent conversation with him, so Dex wasn’t left with any other option but to speak with Vinny in a language he would understand better. He abducted him, stuffed him in the trunk of his car, and brought him to the salon that he had set up for Al. However, Dex didn’t mean to kill Vinny, because he didn’t fit the code, and he wasn’t important enough for Dex to break his rules for him. However, while Dex was trying to intimidate him so he would do the repairs on his buildings and apartments, Angel showed up at the shop. Remember he had been tracking Dex? And the moment he arrived in Midtown and came across a closed shop, he knew it was the spot he was looking for. He stood by the entrance door and heard someone screaming inside. Angel tried to open the door, which alarmed Dex, and he let Vinny go so that no one could pin it on him. I mean, being a serial killer, no one would expect him to let his prey escape, right? This was the reason why Det. Claudette and her partner, Det. Melvin, didn’t buy Angel’s story when he tried telling them that the kill table inside the salon belonged to the Bay Harbor Butcher. On the contrary, Claudette started to suspect Angel, believing either the retired captain had lost his marbles, or he was just making it all up so he could frame his former colleague.

Meanwhile, Dex escaped in the nick of time, but he still couldn’t understand how Angel had tracked him down. He suspected he had planted a tracker on his car and started searching for the device. In the end, he finally located the AirPods Angel had left and crushed them on the street so he wouldn’t be able to tail him anymore. Speaking of Vinny, well, he told Elsa that he would fix the mold issue as quickly as possible.

Angel Is Becoming A Problem

Dex knew that he just got lucky this time, because if Al hadn’t skipped town, and he had continued with his plan to kill him in the same salon, then Angel would have literally caught him “red-handed.” And then there was no way he could have proved his innocence or stood by Harrison’s side. You see, Angel has been getting under Dex’s skin. He’s making him paranoid, which means he will try to be extra careful, but he doesn’t want things to be this way. He wants to hunt freely, but Angel won’t leave him alone until he has put Dex behind bars. So how’s Dex going to deal with his old buddy? I first thought Dex was going to frame him for something, considering he cannot kill him because of his code, but now it seems like Dex won’t even have to lift a finger to get rid of Angel, and someone else is going to do the job for him. No, no one’s killing him, just driving him out of the city.

Throughout the episode, Claudette had been scrutinizing the old media reports on the Bay Harbor Butcher, trying to figure out if Angel had been speaking the truth or if he was just obsessed with a closed case. At some point, she even contacted an officer from the Miami PD, who told her that Angel took an early retirement and went to New York City to hunt down the infamous Butcher. Now I don’t exactly remember, but I think Angel never told Claudette and Melvin that he was retired, right? Correct me if I am wrong, but I think this was the moment when Claudette started to suspect Angel. She realized that he had been lying to them and hiding things from them, and therefore the man in the hat couldn’t be trusted. And to make matters worse, Angel brought them to the salon shop, making a fool of himself. Claudette and Melvin no longer found Angel credible or trustworthy. In fact, she suspected him. I am not quite sure, but I think she feels that it was Angel who killed Ryan Foster, because his body showed up the moment Angel arrived in town. Or maybe I am reaching too far, and Claudette just believes that Angel has lost his mind and is wasting their time, trying to distract them from catching the real killer. Whatever the case might be, in the promo of episode 9, Claudette and Angel are in the station, where Claudette warns him that if he’s still in the city tomorrow, she will have him arrested. So, once again the question remains the same: will Angel leave so easily?

Prater Wants To Own The Dark Passenger

Earlier in the episode, Charley, Prater’s most trusted confidante, tried to connect the deaths of his guests with Ronald Schmidt, aka Red, but Prater refused to believe her, telling her that he trusted him and knew him better than she did. However, it was evident that Charley wasn’t going to let Red get away so easily, so she likely decided to do some background checks, or maybe she followed Red (Dex) around and found out about his son, Harrison.

In episode 8’s ending, Prater arrived in the restaurant where Dex and Harrison were having lunch together. Prater quickly walked to their table, telling Red (Dex) that he didn’t know that he had a son. Well, Dex has been exposed, not completely (Prater still believes he is the real Red). However, Prater has found out about Harrison, and he’s going to use the information to his advantage. In the promo of episode 9, Prater asks Dex if his son knows “who they are,” meaning does Harrison know his father’s a serial killer? Well, he knows, which isn’t Dex’s concern, yet he didn’t want Prater to find out about Harrison because that would put Harrison’s life in danger. The cold billionaire will use the information for his benefit, and Dex doesn’t like to be ordered, blackmailed, or tamed. But I think he doesn’t have any other option either. In the promo of episode 9, one can see Dex wearing Red’s hoodie, which can suggest that Prater has asked Dex to kill someone at the Gala, but we still don’t know who this person is. The promo ends with Prater saying, “The Dark Passenger is mine,” so you understand what he is trying to do. Prater wants to own Red (Dex), but we all know that’s too much to ask for, and he may get the biggest shock of his life once he finds out who the real “Dark Passenger” is.
