‘Diary Of A Ditched Girl’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Will There Be A Season 2?

Published

Diary Of A Ditched Girl’s ending will make you want to pull your hair out, because not only is it ambiguous, but it also leaves the protagonist, Amanda, with yet another reason to be anxious about life. The Swedish drama centers around a 30-year-old Amanda, who has a life-altering moment in a public park, where she’s flashed by a random man. So far, Amanda’s been “married to the cosmos” and sworn to celibacy, but after this incident, she feels the need to find love again (yikes, talk about getting off to a bad start, girl; this is a sign to look for therapy, not love). Amanda’s got a sister who’s in the perfect relationship, and she’s got friends who are very sure of themselves, not obsessing over what others might think about them. That’s just Amanda’s story. But the 7th episode of this season certainly gives us an answer to why Amanda is the way she is, so let me break down the ending of Diary Of A Ditched Girl.

Spoiler Alert

Why Does Amanda Struggle With Love?

Throughout the show, we know that the only decent relationship Amanda has is with her sister, Adina, but when looking at Adina’s successful relationship with her boyfriend, Filip, Amanda slowly starts to get insecure. She wonders why she doesn’t deserve a relationship like hers when she’s no different from her sister. Here’s the thing: both sisters have had the same upbringing, but the difference in their personalities is what makes one more susceptible to love than the other. In the final act of the show, Adina tells Amanda that it’s not always a bad thing to be somebody who can’t contain themselves. This is how they’re different. I suppose one could conclude that a ragged upbringing also caused Adina’s OCD, but maybe she came out of the bad family experience okay.

While Marianne from “Normal People” suffered at the hands of an abusive father, in Amanda’s case, the problem was a neglectful father. However, the results for both of them are quite similar; they both don’t know what to do with real love. When Amanda first sees her childhood crush, who she tried to kiss in 7th grade, she immediately detests the idea of trying to get with him because he’s now hot and he’ll hate her even more than he did back in 7th grade. But later, when they match on Tinder, she gives him a chance, only to ruin it all by taking a very long shower after feeling insecure about her body and then sending Emil off because she’s only had bad experiences ever since she’s gotten back in the dating scene.

Emil is the first man among all the guys that Amanda dates who cares about what she wants and what her needs are, rather than the other men who obsess over machismo and their own satisfaction. Amanda has never experienced this before. This makes Emil feel like he’s done something wrong and that he should be the one to leave because Amanda doesn’t like him. If only she’d communicated properly, things would’ve been okay; however, she doesn’t know how to communicate because of her mangled relationship with her father.

In Amanda and Adina’s cases, their father got married a second time and had a son with his new wife. This new wife is controlling of him, and the girls rarely get to see their dad, who is way too busy for them and only cares about the son. At his 60th birthday party, which was completely planned and set up by the girls, Amanda rightfully calls her father out for only caring about his youngest son and only using the girls when he needs to get some work done. She’s grown up thinking that doing things for others relentlessly is the way to be loved. Amanda’s dad even tries to gaslight her in that moment, failing to make a real apology to his daughters, who he’s neglected all this time.

On the other hand, it’s not like they have the best relationship with their mother either. The woman fails to understand love herself, going back to the same “lonely dead tiger” again and again, despite there being nothing there. Additionally, she’s the one who married the kids off to the cosmos back when Amanda was 10, and she’s the one who tells Amanda that she might be giving mixed signals to the universe because she’s married to the cosmos. But Adina managed to find Filip just fine. But by the end of the show, Amanda comes to the realization that she’s not in the wrong here; she’s just not known what love’s really meant to be because of what she’s seen around.

Do Amanda and Emil End Up Together?

So, ultimately, Amanda decides to give Emil a real chance because he genuinely likes her, and that’s what she deserves. Instead of letting him decide what she’s thinking, she actually communicates her feelings, talking about her insecurities and the reasons she doesn’t know how to feel loved, and because he’s a secure man who genuinely cares for her, he accepts her exactly the way she is. Emil seems to be a little bit shy and insecure himself, but he did apologize as soon as he made a mistake and tried to fix things with Amanda immediately. He didn’t just let it go; he asked her if she wanted to let it go.

In Diary Of A Ditched Girl’s ending, Amanda and Emil look like a perfect, happy couple. Amanda looks like she finally knows what it’s like to be loved for who she is, and she’s all smiles; however, she hasn’t told him that she slept with the bartender after Emil was a no-show at the Halloween party. Amanda doesn’t want to mess up a good thing, but if she’d told him the truth, he might’ve accepted it. They both made mistakes; however, at that point, Amanda and Emil weren’t exactly in a relationship; they were just seeing each other. I suppose they might’ve gotten over it. However, because she didn’t tell him, when the bartender walks into the bar that they’re all hanging out in at the end of the episode, Amanda immediately freaks out.

Will There Be A Second Season?

As it goes with shows where a woman is trying to find love, the ending of the season leaves us wondering if she’s really okay or if she has to go through this ordeal all over again. The bartender comes to the same bar as the gang is hanging out in the final episode, while Emil is buying drinks for the table. The episode closes with the bartender talking to Emil while Amanda sits still at the table, wondering if he’s outed her. The show ends on a cliffhanger where Emil might find out the truth and leave Amanda back at square one. I suppose this means if the show does well, there’s potential for a second season where we see Amanda and Emil navigate through this confusing situation. I don’t think Emil is the kind of guy who will leave Amanda over such a mistake, but she shouldn’t make it again, and we know she’s drawn to people like the bartender (people who aren’t good to her, who don’t care as much and make her work for their love, the bad boys if you will), which means he’s probably going to be a recurring character. Maybe we’ll get a sort of love triangle, or we’ll get new characters because generally that’s what happens in these kinds of comedies, where we get to see more hot men show up to confuse our already flabbergasted protagonist. Maybe Amanda’s father will be able to fix his relationship with the girls. Of course, the end result has to be Amanda finding herself.
