Someone seems to have a vendetta against the residents of Riviera Esmeralda, as one after the other, dead bodies are discovered. But who is the killer and what is their motive? Detective Indira Martinez was assigned to untangle the murder mystery. Given the complicated lives of the homeowners in Riviera Esmeralda, the detective had a tough time figuring out the truth. Spoiler Alert
How did the police conclude that Angela was the serial killer?
Given how driven Angela was to seek revenge on the people she considered ungrateful for not attending her father’s funeral, it was obvious, at least to the audience, that she was behind the murders. Jesus Franco, Adrian Ferrer, and Cristobal Balboa’s bodies were discovered by the police within forty-eight hours. Franco, a forty-five-year-old lawyer with two children, was murdered in a hotel room he had booked the previous night. His body was found in the bathtub, and according to surveillance footage, a woman with blonde hair had entered the room with him. To Indira’s surprise, all three victims had died of heart attacks, and all evidence was washed off because Adrian and Cristobal’s bodies were recovered from a swimming pool. Cristobal was devastated when he discovered that Adrian was murdered, and on that very night, he received texts from a Tinder profile inviting him to a villa next door. The next thing we knew, Cristobal too was murdered. The Tinder profile was a common factor in all the murders, and all the victims were in contact with a profile named Red Velvet before they were killed. Camila’s stage name had been Red Velvet, and Angela had been to frame her by using her name to create the profile. Though Indira thought it was odd that the killer left such a vital clue for the police to discover, she could already sense there was more to the story. Indira initially suspected Inti Valderamma, a male sex worker, who in season one was paid by Angela’s father, Pedro, to entice his son, Adrian. Later, he betrayed Pedro by developing a sexual relationship with Angela. Inti was arrested after his fingerprints were found near the pool where Cristobal’s body was discovered. The police searched Inti’s boat and found illegal drugs in it, and that was reason enough for them to arrest him. Inti denied the allegations and stated that the drugs were planted and that he had nothing to do with the murders. He had met Cristobal the night he was murdered and proposed that they work together to make the Ferrer family pay for the damage they had done. It is gradually revealed that he was indeed telling the truth.
According to Indira’s theory, the killer was going after unfaithful men. A woman who used to live in Riviera Esmeralda approached the detective and informed her about her missing husband, Ignacio Santos. She added that Miguel was the reason why she and her husband had opted for an open marriage, and even after their relationship ended, her husband continued to mingle with other women. Ignacio’s body was soon discovered at a beach, and it was deduced that he had been assaulted with a sharp object, like a shard of glass, during sex. Unlike the previous cases, traces of scopolamine were not discovered in his blood, and Indira guessed that Ignacio was the first victim, and the killer had evolved their modus operandi. This further confirmed Indira’s theory that the killer was after unfaithful men. But the case took a turn when Camila’s friend, Erika, was murdered out of the blue. She had recently discovered that Miguel had been stalking Camila, and for a brief while it seemed Miguel was responsible for the killings. But Indira realized he was innocent when she discovered he had received an AI voice note mimicking Camila, inviting him to come to Manacoa Island. The killer wanted to frame Miguel, and that was why, along with Camila, Angela had also texted Miguel the address. Miguel rescued Camila after Angela attempted to burn her alive, but he could not catch the killer. Indira started suspecting Angela after Tina was murdered too. She was under the impression that, unlike the other murders, killing Tina was personal for the serial killer. When the forensic team managed to find DNA in a villa that was burned down, it struck Indira as odd, unless the killer wanted to frame Miguel and had intentionally dropped body fluids at the scene for the police to discover. She had also discovered that the remote island belonged to Angela’s deceased mother, even though Angela denied knowing about it. Considering that the killer had attempted to frame Miguel and Camila, Indira deduced that the killer had a personal enmity with them, and the only person who hated the couple with all her heart was Angela. Her suspicion turned out to be true when she discovered that Angela had turned off the live surveillance footage and instead a video was played on loop.
What was the motive behind the murders?
Angela despised unfaithful men, especially after Miguel cheated on her. During her time in prison, she plotted the murders. She was driven by two motives—one, to punish unfaithful men, and two, to kill those who wronged or did not show respect to her father. Angela was perhaps driven by a sense of guilt, considering that she was responsible for her father’s death. She refused to accept that her father was a manipulative man, and instead she wanted to ensure that anyone who attempted to challenge his reputation was punished. She killed Tina, her father’s associate, because she had dared to tell Angela secrets about her father. Pedro had had an affair with Tina’s mother; he often used to spend days at their house. As time passed, Pedro started to take an interest in young Tina. He molested and raped her, but Tina was too young to realize that she had been assaulted. She slowly developed feelings for Pedro, and he exploited her emotions to carry out all his sinister schemes. But Angela refused to believe Tina.
According to her, Pedro could’ve never committed such a heinous crime, and therefore Tina deserved to die. She had planned to kill Tina even before she had confessed. She had recently discovered that Tina had conspired with Santiago, the CEO of her father’s company, Ferrer Barragan, to lure her and convince her to exit from the company. She splashed boiling water at Tina and then proceeded to stab her multiple times. Even though Tina had attempted to escape, Angela ultimately killed her. Presumably, she had killed Cristobal because she knew he would pose a threat to her; she perhaps feared he would want a share in Ferrer Barragan. But why did she kill her own brother and also Erika, who was neither unfaithful nor had any personal enmity with Pedro?
Who was Angela’s partner-in-crime?
Fake Profile season 2’s ending revealed that Angela had a partner-in-crime, Joaquin Duval. She was introduced to the therapist during her time in prison, and she shared her deepest, darkest thoughts and feelings with him. Duval had a dirty past; he was previously accused of sexually assaulting his teenage patient and taking videos of her without her consent. Expectedly, when Angela poured her heart out, Joaquin validated her feelings. She was told that her desire to punish unfaithful men and her hatred towards those who had wronged her father were valid, and instead of helping her overcome them, Joaquin instigated her to explore her dark thoughts. Together they decided to start an experiment. He always had an interest in studying sexually unsatisfied men, especially those already in committed relationships. He had Angela as a best friend, confidant, and later lover, and together they executed their plan. They carefully chose their victims, people they personally knew were unfaithful.
To murder their first victim, Ignacio, Joaquin got Angela a special medical leave from prison. Things got complicated between them when Adrian discovered what his sister and Joaquin were up to, and that was why he murdered Adrian. And Erika was killed simply because she always kept a close watch on Camila. Joaquin was also Camila’s therapist, and he had started to fancy her. When the police arrested him, a video camera was discovered from his office. When Camila met Joaquin in his office, he had locked the door, but thankfully Indira had figured out that he was a dangerous man when Miguel raised the alarm and she discovered his criminal record. Unfortunately, Indira could not keep Joaquin in prison for long. Soon after his release, Joaquin drugged Camila and attempted to flee with her, when suddenly Miguel and the police came to Camila’s rescue. Just when Joaquin was about to shoot Camila and Miguel, Indira intervened and shot Joaquin.
Did Angela Escape?
Fake Profile season 2’s ending suggests that Angela managed to escape from the police, and she was not alone. While Angela was in a sexual relationship with her neighbor, Emanuel, she ended up killing him as well in the final episode. He had realized that Angela was still in love with Miguel, and she simply was not ready to confront how she truly felt about her ex-husband. Angela had started to enjoy murdering people for no particular reason, and killing Emanuel was partly simply because of the thrill of it. She had also taken an interest in Vannessa, Santiago’s wife, who was desperate for romantic affection. Santiago did not treat his wife well, and Angela pitied Vannessa. It was also her way of getting back at Santiago, who desperately wanted her to exit from the company to satisfy the shareholders. When Santiago found Vannessa and Angela in a compromising position at his own house, he attempted to assault Angela. Vannessa grabbed hold of a gun and shot him. Angela perhaps did not expect such a turn of events. As much as she wanted to get rid of Santiago, watching Vannessa kill her husband just to protect her lover left Angela in awe. She suggested that they dissolve his body in a chemical solution, and Angela and Vannessa sailed away in a boat. Vannessa had likely sent her kids away to live with her parents while she decided to accompany Angela, perhaps to a foreign country.
Fake Profile will possibly return with a third season. Angela and Vannessa had managed to escape from the police for the time being, but can they hide away for long? While Vannessa was head over heels in love with Angela, it was not the same for Angela. Angela was grateful to Vannessa, and she sympathized with her situation, but Angela was not in love with her. She still had feelings for Miguel, and since she could not have him, she would return to destroy him and Camila’s relationship. Also, Vannessa was unaware that Angela was the serial killer, and when she discovers the truth, she will perhaps want to walk away from their relationship.
Camila and Miguel are finally together, and in the next season, we might witness them going to great lengths to protect their relationship. Another interesting character this season was Angela’s neighbor Laura, an older woman who fell in love with a young man named Matteo. Even though initially she thought it was all too good to be true, she gradually accepted that maybe he had truly fallen in love with her. But in the final episode, after Matteo disappeared, Inti confirmed that his real name was Alonso and he was a sex worker. She learned from him that Alonso’s office was located in Barranquilla. When the receptionist asked for her name, she gave a fake one and stated that she was a photographer looking for male models. In the third season, we hope to learn why Matteo pretended to be in love with Laura. Did he truly fall in love, or did someone set him up? Was her son somehow involved in the arrangement, maybe to teach his mother that she must not trust strangers so easily? Hopefully we will get to know the truth in the next season.
