Fubar season 2, the lighthearted Netflix spy thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Monica Barbaro in the lead roles, starts from where it left us in the previous season. After the entire Boro affair, Luke’s crew had gone into hiding, and they didn’t know how long they’d need to stay in the safehouse. Things became a little complicated when they got to know that a man named Dante Cress had decided to wreak havoc on the United States of America. So let’s find out what happened in Fubar season 2 and if Luke and his team were able to stop Dante Cress or not.
Spoiler Alert
What was Dante Cress’ plan?
At the beginning of Fubar season 2, Luke Brunner was briefed about a mysterious man, Dante Cress, who operated from the shadows and apparently believed that humanity in its current form needed a radical reset. The problem was that he was willing to wipe out 90 percent of the population, as he believed that that was what people deserved, and that was what would save the world. The regional director of the team, Dot, was briefing Luke about it when a few men suddenly arrived and shot at them. Dot died on the spot, but Luke managed to survive, all thanks to the timely intervention of Emma, Aldon, and the rest of the team. Luke and his entire team were locked in the CIA safehouse for that very reason. There were people out there who wanted to kill them, which was why they hadn’t stepped out of the house for months. Apart from Luke’s team, even Carter and Donnie, who were supposed to get married to Emma and Tally, respectively, were stuck there. Both the guys were extremely disheartened with whatever had happened at the end of season 1. But they knew that they couldn’t do anything against the will of their ladies. Luke and the entire team were shaken after the death of Dot, and they knew that the madman they were dealing with was somebody who shouldn’t be taken lightly. Meanwhile, Tina was still leaking information to her superiors at the Russian headquarters. We got to know that her handler was an SVR agent named Volek, who was using all the CIA secret intel to gain leverage over their American counterparts.
Barry was the backbone of Luke’s team, and his exceptional skills really came in handy in finding out what Dante Cress was up to. Through the drive given to Luke by Dot, the team was able to figure out that a man named Theodore Chips was helping Dante Cress out and carrying out his orders. This man, Chips, used to be an MI6 agent before he went rogue. His father, Horatio Chips, was also a decorated MI6 agent before he died on duty. Nobody knew why Chips turned rogue and why he was helping Cress bring about an armageddon. Dante’s plan was to cause a nationwide permanent power outage that would push the United States of America back to the Stone Age, which would eventually lead to a mass extinction of humankind. The CIA got to know that Dante Cress had to destroy just 4 specific points on the power grids in order to cause a complete blackout in the century. Another revelation that was made in the very first episode of season 2 was that Greta Nelso, an East German spy who had worked with Luke back on a mission in 1989, was also part of Dante Cress’ team. Like Chips, she was also helping the man. The moment Luke realized that his old flame, Greta, was also a part of the plan, he knew that it would be an uphill battle for them to stop Dante Cress.
Was the CIA able to catch Tina Mukerji?
At the end of Fubar season 1, we saw that Tina got a call from Volek, which made it very clear that she was working for the Russians and using Barry to get all the classified information of the CIA. Her intentions became even more clear when she, together with Aldon, went to meet an Indian man named Bashir, who had created a detonator that was used by Dante Cress to destroy a power grid. Luke and his team felt that Bashir probably knew something about the mysterious Dante Cress, or at least could tell them about how he looked. But before Aldon could interrogate the man, Tina killed Bashir, and she pretended that she did so in self-defense. Aldon took Bashir’s mobile phone and gave it to Tina to find out if it contained any critical information. But Tina didn’t do anything, as Volek asked her to create as many obstacles as she could in order to send Luke and his team down the wrong course. Tina’s cover was blown when she assisted Barry in a manner that made it clear that she had some inside information about Russian spy gear that the others didn’t. So basically, Luke and Emma were trying to stop Greta from destroying the Litchfield power grid. Greta had been able to corrupt the sewer lines of a military base, break into the server rooms, hack one of the satellites, and make it hover over one of the vulnerable points, i.e., a power grid. Barry had to hijack a military-owned spaceship and go into space to try to throw the satellite off its course. Roo, who happened to be an excellent mathematician, did all the calculations, and she asked Barry to head in the direction of the satellite at a certain speed. What Roo didn’t know was that her calculations were wrong since Russian spy gear was mounted over that satellite, which made it a little heavier. That small miscalculation could have caused a collision, which in turn would have taken Barry’s life. Tina knew that if she told Barry anything, her cover would be blown. But she still went ahead and told Barry to not go at the speed that Roo told her to. Barry decided to believe what Tina told him, and as a result, his life was saved. Later in Fubar season 2, Greta told Luke, during one of their encounters, that there was somebody in the latter’s team who was working for the Russians. Up until then, Luke thought that it was Farkas who was leaking information or working for Dante Cress. But once Luke got to know about the entire satellite fiasco, he realized that Farkas’ speculation about Tina being the mole was not wrong. Tina was taken into custody, and Barry got the shock of his life as he had never imagined that the woman whom he loved more than anything in the world was actually using him all that while.
Who was Dante Cress? What was his plan?
Until the very end of Fubar season 2, we didn’t get to know who the real Dante Cress was, what he looked like and where he was hiding. Luke, Emma, Barry, and Roo had realized certain things about Cress; they knew that he could be somebody they knew, as he was so good at hiding his real identity. They also knew that he was a master planner who was always 10 steps ahead of every intelligence agency. But even after everything, the team was not able to get a breakthrough and find out from where this man was operating. Meanwhile, Theodore Chips, after being caught by Luke and his team, just resigned himself to his fate. He actually became a part of the CIA team and made no efforts whatsoever to escape from captivity. He expressed his feelings towards Emma and made it very clear that she was the prime reason why he didn’t mind staying in captivity. The man didn’t miss a chance to flirt with her, and to some extent, even Emma got convinced that he was enamored by her. Chips helped Luke and his team on multiple occasions, but he won over the latter’s trust after he saved Tally from the Swedish mafia. Also, it was Chips who compromised Luke and his team’s location by using Donnie’s laptop to send a text to Greta. In his defense, he said that he just wanted to tell her how much Luke loved her and how they should once again be together. Luke believed him when he said all those things, but in the end, he realized that it was all one big trap. Theodore Chips was Dante Cress, and the man had outplayed the entire CIA team single-handedly. Aldon met Nonna, the Italian informant, as he felt that she might have some information about Cress. Nonna was working for Cress, who had asked her to kill Aldon. Aldon realized that he could use the opportunity to track her payment source and find out where Cress was hiding. Barry and Farkas tried figuring it out, but they weren’t able to. Farkas told the team that if Cress transferred money one more time, then he could probably track him down. By then, Luke had been able to convince Greta to side with him and prove to the world that she was not a terrorist. He told Greta that he would shut down the fourth power plant, just to show Cress that Greta had completed her task. He said that through the payment gateway, they would track Cress’ location down and then switch the power grid back on. The payment channel led them to Volek, and they felt that the Russian SVR agent was the real Dante Cress. Also, Luke, Emma, and the entire team were horrified when they got to know what Cress’ real plan was. Dante Cress knew that the moment the power grids got shut off, as a fail-safe mechanism, every nuclear missile in the United States of America would be shifted to a launch position. So basically, the plan was not to push America back to the Stone Age by destroying its economy, but to cause a nuclear armageddon. Theodore Chips stood in front of the entire team, slyly smirking at them. He was proud of the fact that he had defeated them at their own game. The man had literally been sitting in the CIA safehouse with them for days, and they hadn’t been able to guess who he was.
Were Greta and Luke able to stop Dante Cress?
Dante Cress told Emma that he was the one who had killed his father back in the day. For Horatio Chips, his duty came before anything else. When Theodore got to know about a sex scandal of a parliamentarian, Horatio had no option but to kill his son. As frivolous as it might have sounded, it was still a state-held secret. Horatio tried to smother Theodore, but the latter retaliated in full force and murdered his father. I say murdered and refrain from using the word self defence, because the intent was not to just save himself. Chips did lose his calm in that moment and he took his father’s life.
Horatio, in his last moments, realized that the word “patriotism” had no meaning, and his entire life, his duty, was all a big farce. Emma told Theodore that what happened to him was not right, but that didn’t mean that he had the right to kill billions of innocent people. But Chips, aka Cress, had made up his mind, and he was hell-bent on causing a nuclear war which would eventually lead to the destruction of humanity as a whole. Luke and his team knew that the moment the American nukes went into the stratosphere, the Russians would presume that their arch nemesis had launched a nuclear attack on them. Also, since the communication channels were jammed, the CIA couldn’t reach out to their Russian counterparts. Though they managed to get in contact, the Russians thought it was all a ruse to misguide them before the attack. But Luke realized that he was one of the four operatives who could stop the missiles from being launched. Luke had to say a keyword, in his own voice, from a missile base in order to override the launch command. Luke, in that moment of panic, couldn’t remember what that passcode was for the longest time. The entire team took a sigh of relief the moment he spoke that password and prevented a nuclear war. But the problem was that the nuclear missile at the base they were at couldn’t be stopped by the command. Barry and Roo came to the conclusion that somebody would have to do it manually, which meant sacrificing their life in the process.
Greta, who had been listening to whatever was happening, decided to sacrifice her own life. Just a moment ago, Luke had told her how much he loved her, but she knew he said it only to stop her from following Dante Cress’ orders. Luke told Greta that there was some good left inside her and that she shouldn’t work for Dante Cress. Back in the day, Greta had to fake her own death in order to save herself from the Russian spies. She and Luke were the prime reasons why a war between Russia and the USA was prevented, and she had to pay a heavy price for it. She realized after that that the world didn’t deserve her goodness. She decided to earn money and look out for herself, even if it meant destroying nations and killing innocent people. But then, after talking to Luke, she had a change of heart. She went inside the external tank of the missile that was going to be jettisoned. Greta made sure that the missile didn’t make it to outer space, and before the Russian radar got to know about it, it fell back to earth. Greta was miraculously able to save her life using the solid foam that absorbed all the shock, and she came out of the jettisoned tank unscathed.
Emma and Luke met Greta once again, and Luke was relieved and happy to find his friend alive. Emma informed her superiors that Greta didn’t make it, and the latter knew that she could finally start afresh and live the kind of life she had always wanted.
Will Barry And Aldon Go Rogue To Save Tina?
Luke went back to Tally, and we came to know the couple were playing along and just pretending to be at loggerheads. It was Dr. Pfeffer, the counselor, who told them to do so, so that Luke could mislead Greta into believing that she actually had a chance of being in a relationship with him. At the end of Fubar season 2, the Russians captured Great Dane, the resourceful man who could fulfill your demands and get you anything on the black market. They asked Luke to give them their asset, i.e. Tina, in exchange for the Great Dane. After Barry and Aldon made the exchange, they got to know that Tina had been on their team all along. She kept telling Barry, after she was caught, that she didn’t love him, but all that while she had been misleading the Russians and feeding them false information. Unfortunately, Great Dane told the Russians about it because he felt that Tina needed to pay for what she had done to Barry. What that meant was that Tina was going to be killed in the near future, as the Russians knew that she had betrayed their trust. Aldon and Barry passed on news of that development to Roo, who had become the new regional head. Aldon and Barry made it very clear that they were going to enter Russian territory and save Tina. Roo sided with them, and I believe that though Luke had decided to take retirement, he would also join the mission for at least one last time. As for Emma and Aldon, I believe there were a lot of things left unspoken. Obviously, Aldon still loved her, and it made him sad when Emma didn’t reciprocate his feelings. Maybe in the future, they would enter into a relationship and decide to spend their lives together. But before that, they had a friend to rescue, and they were ready to do what it would take to save Tina Mukerji.
