The beloved Netflix comedy drama series Ginny & Georgia has returned with its 3rd season, and it is arguably grittier than the previous showings, particularly because Georgia has to go through a criminal trial throughout the season. Ginny and Austin have to bear the brunt of their mother becoming an internet sensation because of the ongoing trial, and they too go through various tribulations because of the same. However, Ginny & Georgia season 3’s ending pulls a massive twist, and we are here to discuss the incidents of the action-packed last episode, and also speculate on what lies in the future ahead for the characters.
Spoiler Alert
Is Georgia found guilty of the murder?
Things look absolutely horrible for Georgia once the private investigator, Gabriel Cordova, testifies in court and reveals that she might actually be a serial killer, which leads to her children being taken away by Child Protection Services. To make matters worse, Paul finally takes the decision to divorce Georgia, which he announces publicly, meaning that the public sentiment, which was already against her, turns even more hostile. Josh Finn, the maverick defense attorney who had been representing her in court, also withdraws from the case, as he had been appointed by Paul, and was also being paid by the mayor personally. Georgia cannot afford the expensive lawyer by herself, and Ginny has to step in, asking her father’s new lover, Simone, an experienced lawyer, to represent her mother. However, after going through the case file, Simone also comes to the conclusion that there is no way to save Georgia from a prison sentence.
Although the judge had ruled against dragging incidents from Georgia’s past into this particular trial, she seems to be the only suspect in the murder of Tom Fuller. Eventually, young Austin is brought in to testify, and since he had been living away from his mother for some time, with his fiendish father, Gil Timmins, it seems most likely that the boy will finally reveal the truth to the world, as he had really witnessed Georgia commit the murder. However, just the opposite happens, as Ginny & Georgia season 3 implements a twist in the tale, orchestrated by Ginny to save her mother from imprisonment. Ginny had found out about Austin’s harrowing experience at the end of the previous season, when the boy had innocently stated that he had not told anyone about what he had seen, while their mother was being arrested.
Only some time before the final trial hearing, Ginny had run across Gil at her brother’s school, and they had had a nasty altercation, in which Gil had grabbed her arm forcefully, once again displaying his violent and misogynistic tendencies. This encounter had given her the seeds of her final plan—to try and pin the murder on Gil, and when she told Austin of this, the boy further strengthened the idea. Although Austin was starting to like his father, he also knew how violent and evil he could be at times, and he was even more convinced when Ginny showed him the bruises on her hand that Gil had caused. Thus, he told his elder sister about how Gil had been blacklisted from owning or renting any property in Wellsbury by Georgia and Cynthia, which was enough motive for him to have committed the murder.
Hence, when Austin is finally called up to testify in court, he reveals how he had witnessed the entire incident, but claims that it was actually Gil who had smothered Tom to death. Austin further adds that he had overheard a conversation about his father having been blacklisted, and adds how the man had sneaked into the house while Cynthia and Georgia were busy. This obviously leaves no doubts in the minds of the judge, the jury members and everyone else in the courtroom about Gil Timmins being the real murderer, and his motive being the step taken against him by the women. It is made to seem like Gil killed Tom as an act of direct revenge against Cynthia, for having blacklisted him, and then pinned the blame on his ex-wife, Georgia, for having come up with the plan of the blacklist.
As Cynthia herself is called up to the stand next, and questioned about the possibility of Gil having entered her house, she does not deny the theory and says that it could certainly have been possible, as Gil would often come to pick up Austin from his playdates with her son, Zach. However, there is an act of manipulation and blackmail behind this admission as well, since Cynthia would have never lied to protect Georgia, whom she genuinely blames for depriving her of the chance to say goodbye to her dying husband. Since Georgia did not have any ill intentions behind killing Tom (this is the truth, despite it sounding ridiculous), she had never spoken up about Cynthia’s affair with Joe during the trial, which could have easily been used in her favor. She did not want to hurt Joe by doing this, especially because this information would have made Joe the prime suspect, who wanted to get rid of his lover’s husband.
However, as Ginny herself admits, she has no intention of being so respectful towards Cynthia, and she doesn’t mind destroying the woman’s life if she has to, in order to protect her mother. Ginny goes to Cynthia’s house the night before the final hearing, and she reveals that she knows about her affair with Joe, and especially about how they had hooked up at the Blue Farm Café. She lies that the café has multiple security cameras, from which the footage of their romance can be easily retrieved and produced in court, which would immediately make her and Joe the prime suspects. Thus, Cynthia decides to protect herself by lying, and confirms that Gil could indeed have killed her husband.
These revelations change the course of the trial immediately, and the jury announces that they have found Georgia not guilty of the murder of Tom Fuller. Thus, at the end of Ginny & Georgia season 3, Georgia is acquitted of all charges, and she is finally freed from the ankle monitor and the house arrest. Ginny’s plan surely has some emotional consequences, like her feeling equally involved in her mother’s criminal decisions, which is evident from her poem as well, and also Austin’s eventual realization that he had been made to throw his own father under the bus by Ginny, meaning that his father will again disappear from his life. The second situation gives us enough reason to expect a conflict between Ginny and the maturing Austin in the next season, which has remained missing in the show so far. Given that Austin realizes that it is only he who has to suffer because of his lies in court, he will surely lash out against his elder sister sometime in the future.
Is Georgia pregnant once again?
Georgia’s romantic life has been as messy as her situation in general in recent times, beginning with the fact that Paul first abandons her to protect his own public image, and then decides to divorce her. He cannot be completely blamed either, as Georgia manipulated him into coming back to her life and making appearances during the trial in order to boost her chances of going unpunished. She claimed the positive pregnancy test of Ginny as her own to say that she was pregnant with Paul’s child, which really worked for some time, as he did return. It can be argued that Georgia had already realized that Paul did not genuinely love her, as he had left, and therefore he was already just a pawn she had to use to help herself. Nonetheless, Paul leaves her and is terribly angry at her even after the trial has ended, and Georgia goes to his office to apologize and return the engagement ring that he had given her. Getting back with Gil is out of the question, and despite her genuine love for Zion, he too cannot be with her anymore, since he is now in love with Simone and is very serious about their relationship.
Yet, it is almost mandatory for Georgia to be romantically involved at all times with someone, as she herself admits, and so it is now Joe who finally gets to express his feelings for and attraction towards her. There are quite a few moments throughout the season when Joe and Georgia share an intimate moment, and either just stop at a kiss or pull away before anything of the sort happens, especially when he keeps her company during the house arrest. Eventually, though, they do end up kissing passionately once Georgia has been acquitted, but we are not shown whether they make love.
However, at the very end of Ginny & Georgia season 3, Georgia is seen drinking milk straight out of the carton as if she is craving it, which is something that she only does when she is pregnant. Ginny also takes notice of this, and the series leaves us with this cliffhanger, making it almost obvious that Georgia is indeed pregnant once again. We are not sure who the father is, though, but Joe seems to be the most likely candidate, since the two of them were last seen in a rather romantic scenario. However, it will be a real shocker if it is revealed in season 4 that Paul is the father of her child, for they might have made love once again after their fiery confrontation. We did see Paul making love to Georgia in an intense situation earlier in the season, and something similar might have happened when she went to the mayor’s office to return the ring.
Does the recall referendum against Paul take place?
Paul Randolph’s position as the mayor of Wellsbury is at its shakiest by the end of season 3, for there is a recall referendum being proposed, essentially to remove him from the post. The fiasco with Georgia, especially the controversy regarding her being called the Mayoress Murderess does hurt Paul’s political career, but not more than he himself does eventually. In his desperation to protect his image, he abandons his wife and stops showing up at the trial hearings, which, in turn, ends up affecting his image further. Eventually, when Georgia is acquitted, one of her neighbors tells her how she feels Paul to be a coward of a man who had left her alone in the most difficult of times, and she is not alone in expressing such a sentiment.
But the decision that affects his career the most is that of supporting Proposition 38, which will allow fast food franchises to open stores in Wellsbury. Having always claimed to have been a true leader of the people, Paul had been elected because he was against letting such franchises into the small town, where the citizens wanted to support homegrown and healthy businesses. However, Paul now switches his stance completely under political pressure, as advised by his campaign manager, Nick, and an election is called to have the very citizens decide whether they want franchise businesses to set up stores in their town.
We are not shown the result of this election by the end of the series, but it seems most likely that people will vote against Proposition 38, which also means that Paul will be recalled from the position of the mayor. To begin with, a lot of people support businesses like the Blue Farm Café, which would be terribly affected by the presence of restaurant chains. While some had started to favor the convenience that these chain businesses would bring, Georgia successfully changes most of their opinions in order to help her friend, Joe, by making use of the same strategic intelligence she had once used to ensure Paul’s reelection.
Georgia pays a construction team to fake drill the street outside the mayoral office in order to remind everyone how the sound of the new constructions facilitated by Proposition 38 will make their lives irritable and intolerable. Although we do not see Paul losing his position just yet, there is already a rift in his office, as he fires Nick for having misled him throughout the time, first by advising him to divorce Georgia, and then to support Proposition 38. This means that Nick will join whoever Paul’s opponent in the election might be, and will also work with a special vengefulness, and we will finally see a new mayor in Wellsbury.
Are any steps taken to deal with Marcus’ alcoholism?
It is frankly a bit difficult to accept that nobody noticed, or felt, that Marcus was turning into an alcoholic, as he has been downing bottles to deal with his struggles with depression ever since the previous season. He even attended classes at school in a drunken state, and thankfully his problem is now finally seen and addressed. It is incidentally Georgia who first realizes what is up with the boy, after he steals two bottles of wine from her and she finds a stash of empty bottles in his garage. Although she tells Ellen about this, the latter chooses not to intervene, and she makes the same decision even when Max makes the same complaint against her twin brother.
Marcus’ alcoholism eventually takes a toll on his academics as well, since he has probably never been seen submitting his assignments on time in the series. His parents are called to the school and notified of the fact that he has failed and will have to repeat the year. By this time, Max had grown terribly concerned about her brother’s well-being, since she caught him drinking at school and even at the theater during her performance. All her efforts to alert their parents are quashed by Ellen, who does not want to put any more pressure on her son. However, when Marcus sneaks out of the house despite being grounded, and then has an emotional breakdown in a heavily drunken state, Ellen and Clint are forced to take action. Therefore, the season ends with Marcus being admitted to a rehabilitation center to help deal with his alcoholism.
Is further trouble headed Georgia and her kids’ way?
When Georgia’s trial is suddenly reported on by every news media in the region and it also becomes a hot topic of discussion on the internet, thousands of people get to know about her and her alleged crimes. But more importantly, many people whom she had categorically pushed out of her life now also get an idea about her whereabouts and her current situation in life, which is definitely quite concerning. She starts receiving calls from her biological father, Shane Reilly, who is still incarcerated at the New Mexico State Penitentiary, the first few of which she ignores. It is revealed that Shane had been sent to prison for having tried to murder his wife and young daughter, meaning Georgia, and this is why the protagonist does not want to keep in contact with him.
However, when Georgia finally picks up Shane’s call in the end, he is quick to remind her that others who have been looking for her for all these years must have also found her location. Indeed, one of the very last scenes in the season shows a gruff-looking couple driving around Georgia’s house, scoping the place out. This is surely Georgia’s mother and stepfather, who were earlier seen watching the news of her trial, as they are about to barge back into her life, most probably demanding money and carrying out other means of extortion. How Georgia deals with this new trouble, and especially how she keeps her children insulated from it will be interesting to watch when Ginny & Georgia season 4 finally arrives.
