‘Grotesquerie’ Episode 7 Recap & Ending Explained: Is Lois Dead Or Alive?

Published

Like I said last week, Lois needed to stop hallucinating as things were getting really messy. And [Spoiler Alert] she was indeed dreaming all this while. The seventh episode of Grotesquerie revealed that it wasn’t her husband, Marshall Tryon, who was on life support, but it was Lois all along. But hold on. See, it’s a Ryan Murphy show, and we already have 3 episodes left, so for the sake of God or Satan, whatever you believe, don’t fall for that trap. The alternate version of events that we saw in episode 8 may yet again be a figment of Lois’ imagination, as she had once wished God to put her on life support instead of Marshall. Her statement makes me believe that Lois, under the influence of alcohol, might be taking a little “What If” trip and imagining things. Well, you see, loneliness can rewire your brain into imagining all sorts of weird stuff.

Merritt Decides To Move In With Fast Ed

I have mentioned in one of my previous articles that Lois’ first meeting with Ed Laclan was kind of dream-like, which implied that either he didn’t really exist, or she met him somewhere else and had been trying to “twist” the narrative. I’ll get into that later. In episode 7, Lois’ daughter, Merritt, informed her that she had been selected for the Half-Ton Trauma show and therefore had decided to move in with Ed in a gated community as she would need his love and support during the filming of the show. It took a minute for Lois to process the entire thing because it was the same guy she had been sleeping with a week ago, and now he was planning to marry her daughter. By the way, we never saw Lois and Ed getting intimate. So, like Ed said, it never happened, and Lois was just imagining things. A later part of the episode revealed that the entire scene was Lois’ imagination, and instead of Lois, it was Marshall who was being informed of Lois’ infidelity. But one thing that I would like to mention is that if we consider that we are seeing things from Lois’ perspective, then Lois wasn’t present in this scene, so how did she find out about it? So, it could be possible that even the alternate version of the events wasn’t real and Lois again had been imagining things.

In the alternate version of the events, Merritt had married Ed and later found out that he was cheating on her with her own mother, and as soon as Marshall found out about his wife’s infidelity, he decided to pull the plug of the life support system and let Lois die for good. But as far as Lois was concerned, she arrived at the same decision after Merritt told her that she had fallen in love with Ed. Some two days ago, Redd had also told Lois she was having an affair with Marshall behind her back, which Lois already knew. I mean, she didn’t know the name of the woman, but she did know that her husband was cheating on her. So, in the end, it all added up, and Lois realized she couldn’t take this anymore. She wanted to cut all familial ties with the world, and she started it with Marshall by letting him die in peace.

Father Charlie Mayhew Is Arrested

At the end of the previous episode, we saw a mysterious killer attacking Lois from behind, but their real identity wasn’t revealed to the viewers. Well, it can be assumed that the perpetrator was none other than Father Charlie, and Lois arrested him from the crime scene. In episode 7, Lois and her detectives arrived at Charlie’s house to gather more evidence against him and to understand the motives behind the murder. Initially, the investigation seemed believable, but the moment Ryan Murphy decided to show a ventilator machine in Charlie’s cupboard, it was evident that none of it was real. One might even lose interest in catching all the details because Lois’ mind, which was playing tricks with her, was just searching for a motive to connect Charlie with the crimes, and that’s the only reason why she started to suspect Sister Megan Duval of being Charlie’s accomplice in the grotesque murders.

Sister Megan Tries to Kill Lois

Lois finally came to the conclusion that Sister Megan was the brains behind the Grotesquerie murders and Charlie was just her muscleman. A twisted nun was the true serial killer who orchestrated the entire blood show in order to persuade people to get back to the holy church. Just like a high-ranking priest (from Lois’ perspective of the events) had mentioned to Megan that the crux of the faith is terror and people need the grotesque to believe in God. When Lois confronted Megan with her theory at her house, Megan attacked Lois with a knife, thereby confirming Lois’ doubts about her. The violent fight between them drew a parallel with Lois’ own struggle with life and death. She was kept on a life-support system, and Marshall, after finding out about her affair with her own son-in-law, decided to pull the plug. Inside her head, Lois believed that the person she had put her entire trust in (Megan in the dreamworld and Michael in real life) was trying to kill her, but being a strong-willed Black woman, Lois decided to survive against all odds. Even though the world wanted her dead, she didn’t give up hope and battled death on the hospital bed.

It’s Not A Crime Thriller Anymore

If we are considering the possibility that Grotesquerie doesn’t exist and all the murders were just the horrors of Lois’ mind, then it would be safe to assume that the show isn’t a crime thriller anymore. You can call it a twisted drama about a dysfunctional family. Marshall, fed up with Lois’ alcohol addiction, started an affair with a cam girl named Redd and even bought an apartment for her so he could spend more time with her. Lois, on the other hand, in order to fill the blank space of her husband’s absence, started seeing her son-in-law, Fast Ed. And Marshall, being a chauvinist, decided to kill Lois after he found out about her affair, though he himself had hid his infidelity from his wife for years.

In the end, Megan, who was the chief of police in the alternate version, arrived at the hospital to see her partner for one last time, but the way Marshall acted when he saw her face implied that Megan might have something to do with Lois’ condition. Well, that’s a big plot hole in the story. We still don’t know how exactly Lois (or Marshall) ended up on a life-support system, and I guess the upcoming episodes of the show are going to explore just that. By the way, the long-haired Ed also showed up at the hospital, but Marshall lost his cool and locked the door of Lois’ hospital room to not let his wife’s lover see her face again. Marshall shouted at the doctor (who is none other than Father Charlie) to speed up the process, but Merritt stepped in and requested her father to let her mother die in peace. She played her favorite song while Lois’ heartbeat started fading away slowly. Again, inside her head, she not only overcame Sister Megan but also blew her head off with a mini-handgun (Ryan Murphy really had lots of fun shooting this dream sequence). So, Lois didn’t die. Her heart started beating once again, which implied that she wouldn’t leave the world so soon and has some unfinished business to tend to. Again, the question remains the same: which version of the events is actually true? Because I don’t trust either and still believe that we might come across a third or a fourth version in the upcoming episodes. Let’s see what else Murphy has in store for us.
