[Spoiler Alert] In Heads of State’s ending, UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke and US President Will Derringer are finally able to mend their differences and lay the foundation of a newfound friendship. Throughout the film, Will held a grudge against Sam because he believed he didn’t respect him as a president and looked down upon him as a person. Sam was a graduate from Cambridge, while Will was a mere movie star who ended up going into politics. And then there was this “fish and chips” incident, highlighted all over the media, where Sam was seen dining with Will’s presidential race rival in the middle of Leicester Square. The thing was, Will’s opponent too was a Cambridge alumnus, and Will just connected a few dots to jump to the conclusion that Sam didn’t support his presidency and ended up quite furious about the whole thing. In short, both of them had a lot of ill feelings towards each other and needed some time together to sort out the misunderstandings, which they eventually got around to during their long journey into the wild. When they finally handled the crisis and returned to their posts, Sam invited Will to join him for lunch in London and ordered a plate of “fish and chips,” with a photo-op ready to go. So, it was a happy ending between the two, but Heads of State didn’t end there.
In Heads of State’s mid-credits scene, we saw British secret service agent and Sam’s romantic interest, Noel Bisset, meeting American agent Marty Comer at a beach bar where he was narrating the glorious tales of his survival, sipping a Bahama Mama. The last time we saw Agent Comer, he was in a safe house in Warsaw, where he worked as a station agent; that is, he looked after the safe house and monitored the activities all by himself. However, the main antagonist of the film, Viktor Gradov, employed an expert scientist, Arthur Hammond, to hack into the servers of Echelon, a confidential surveillance organization that kept track of almost all digital footprints. So, as soon as Sam and Will arrived at the Warsaw safehouse, the Echelon system scanned their faces and alerted Arthur about their whereabouts, shortly after which Gradov sent his army of mercenaries to kill the two heads of state. Because of the whole fiasco, the location of the safehouse was exposed to the world, based on which it is safe to assume that the CIA most likely abandoned the location and extracted Agent Comer, who, fortunately, survived against all odds.
In the film, Gradov’s ace assassins, Olga and Sasha, had cornered Agent Comer during the attack on the safe house. They pointed their guns at him, but we didn’t exactly witness his death. Sam and Will had heard a gunshot, presuming Comer to be dead, but in the mid-credits scene, Comer bragged to some ladies around him that he survived the bullet wound because of the metal plate in his head. Well, we can either take his word as gospel, or one can just theorize that Olga and Sasha spared his life because he too was a traitor working for Gradov and VP Elizabeth Kirk.
In Heads of State’s ending, Noel had sent Sam a selfie clicked on a beach. The texts between the two revealed that Noel was on some covert operation in Koh Rong, an island in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Later, in the mid-credits scene, we saw Noel in the same dress, sitting beside Agent Comer, therefore suggesting that both Noel and Comer were on the beach in Koh Rong. The question here, however, is why?
Like I said earlier, if Comer is a traitor, then Noel likely went to Koh Rong to neutralize a compromised asset, and I highly doubt that’s the case, considering the tone of the film. A second possibility is that Comer was relocated to a CIA safe house in Cambodia after the one in Warsaw was compromised. But would he be stupid enough to just blow his cover to impress the ladies around him and tell them that he talked to POTUS on a semi-regular basis? I wouldn’t think so. Now, bear with me, a third possibility is that Comer was on vacation in Koh Rong, and Noel picked up some intel, which was why she contacted Comer, as he could be the only agent available in the area. However, if Noel was enlisting Comer’s help for some covert mission, then we’d have no way of figuring out what it was, because that’s what going to be explored in the second film, right? But, if you are still stuck on the idea that Noel was there to kill Comer, then blowing his cover like that could give Noel enough reasons to befriend him and take him to a secure location before gunning him down.
Whatever the case might be, we really need a sequel to Heads of State to better understand what happened between Noel and Comer and whether they would be going on yet another mission with Will and Sam. As per the ending of the film, the two heads of state are now close friends, so we can assume they will join forces for yet another adventure in the sequel, where they will fight alongside each other against a common enemy, who might want to disrupt world peace and unity.
