‘Hell Of A Summer’ Movie Ending Explained: Will Jason Run Camp Pineway?

Published

Hell of a Summer’s ending reveals the identity of the masked killer and the silly reasons behind all the killings in Camp Pineway. The film centered around a bunch of teenagers who got targeted by a menacing killer at the summer camp. This was the same killer who had murdered the camp managers, Kathy Anderson and John Hurwitz, a night before the teenagers arrived, so that these youngsters couldn’t get any help or escape the trap that had been laid for them.

Spoiler Alert

So this masked killer was none other than Demi, who was hunting down her own friends in the woods so she could get famous and find her spot in the limelight, as she believed the world loved and worshiped hot serial killers. I know, it makes no sense, but Demi, aka Deedee, was a social media influencer, so logic should be the last thing you’d expect of her, right? I think she has been watching too many Netflix docu-dramas centered around glorified psychopaths. Whatever the reason might be, Demi had a change of plan when her boyfriend and co-conspirator, Mike, convinced her that they could still become famous as the hot couple who survived a serial killer if they pinned the entire blame on the weird guy, Jason Hochberg. But for that to happen, they had to first kill all the surviving campers so Demi and Mike didn’t have to compete for the camera coverage. Well, long story short, it didn’t go as planned, and in the end, it was Jason who saved the day. So, without further ado, let’s break down everything that went down in Hell of a Summer’s ending.

The Camp Makes Jason Feel Like Home

I guess, in the end, it was the underdogs who saved the cool kids from their demise. Take Jason, for example. None of the teenagers ever acknowledged his presence nor paid any attention to the things he said. Jason just wanted to be a good camp leader and guide the young counsellors so that they could help the kids arriving at the camp the next day, but these teenagers were only bothered about themselves and their trivial affairs. And when Jason tried to push them too hard, they labeled him as the weird guy.

In a way, Jason was indeed the odd one out. He was 24 and still attending a summer camp, but there were several reasons for that. He had been visiting the summer camp for the last five years because it gave him a sense of belonging. You might have noticed that he was a socially awkward and lonely fella who didn’t seem to have a lot of friends in the real world, but the summer camp gave him a sense of purpose. Additionally, Jason liked the way Kathy and John looked after every kid in the camp and attended to their needs, which once again made Jason feel like he was part of a family. Other than that, Jason had some unfinished business too. Throughout his five visits, he hadn’t been able to become Pineway Champion. He had been a runner-up for the past five years, and I suppose Jason really wanted to turn that defeat into a victory, likely because he believed he needed to be the Pineway Champion to become a camp leader like John and Kathy. However, none of the teenagers in the camp could understand what was driving him except Claire, who got to know Jason a little better and learned of all the things that had been troubling him.

Claire Kills Demi

In Hell of a Summer’s ending, it was Claire who shot the arrow and killed Demi, but she wouldn’t have been able to do it without Jason’s help. At the beginning of the film, Jason, the famed runner-up of the championship, taught Claire how to aim at the target and hit the bullseye. What I am trying to say here is that the teenagers might have never been able to deal with the devil without Jason’s guidance, even though they themselves never acknowledge the impact of Jason’s advice. On the other hand, we have Bobby, Chris’ best friend, who everyone saw as a loser and a coward, who was the one who dared to sacrifice his life to stop Demi’s boyfriend, Mike. In the end, Bobby faced the genetically gifted guy with all the courage he could gather and stabbed Mike in the neck with the Pineway Champion’s pocket knife, killing him on the spot. However, before taking his last breath, Mike stabbed Bobby in the guts with the same pocket knife, and Bobby didn’t have the strength left to make it out of the burning cabin. This was the moment when another underdog came running to his aid and saved his life.

Jason Isn’t A Runner-Up Anymore

The scuffle between Mike and Bobby had started a fire in the cabin. where a runner-up name tag with Jason’s name written on it burned to ashes. I think this visual could imply that Jason isn’t a runner-up anymore, at least not in his mind or for the teenagers whose lives he had saved on that horrible night. In the end, Jason, without a care for his own life, acted like a true leader and ran into the burning cabin to save Bobby’s life. And as soon as he brought him out under the shade of a tree, Bobby pulled out the Pineway Champion’s pocket knife, which Mike had stabbed him with before taking his last breath. Bobby giving the pocket knife to Jason and telling him that he truly deserves it was yet more proof that Jason had broken the curse of being a runner-up and finally become the champion. Well, not officially, but I think this victory still counts. And as this entire incident will grab some media coverage, I think Jason will be hailed as a hero, which I guess will get him some recognition and closure in life.

Jason May Or May Not Return To Summer Camp

Throughout the film, Jason kept telling his love interest, Claire, that he only returned to the summer camp because he wanted Kathy and John to notice that he had it in him to become a great camp leader. Yes, that was what Jason really wanted to become in life. The opening shots of the film established the fact that Kathy and John were both Pineway Champions who later on became the camp leaders, but Jason wasn’t a champion yet, right? Maybe Jason felt that he needed to become a champion first before Kathy and John could make him the camp leader, which was why he kept coming back to try his luck with the championship, but with both Kathy and John dead and the future of Camp Pineway looking bleak, I don’t think Jason would have any more reason to return to the summer camp. Also, he has already become a champion, which was what he had set out to do.

In Hell of a Summer’s ending, Jason did try to bring up the topic again to spin the publicity nightmare the right way and make Camp Pineway even more popular. He wanted to take on responsibility for the camp and run it in the absence of Kathy and John, however, before he could entertain any such possibility, Claire shut him down. Yes, they kissed, which hints at the fact that Jason and Claire may enter into a real relationship in the near future and start a life together. I mean, you can also see them as a perfect replacement for Kathy and John, though I don’t think Claire is too keen on managing a summer camp. She may choose a different path in life, and Jason may have to decide for himself. The thing is, Jason does want to continue coming back to the summer camp and guiding the kids, just like Kathy and John helped him when he first visited Camp Pineway, but he doesn’t want to lose Claire in his obsession with the summer camp. And I don’t think he’ll be able to choose both, so yeah, that’s a tragedy for him, as in both cases, he’ll lose a crucial part of himself. But as we saw in the film, it was his selfless act that made him the champion in the end, so maybe giving up his obsession to earn Claire’s love in life might be a new beginning for Jason, and that I see as a happy ending for both of them.

Bobby and Shannon May Make Peace With Each Other

As far as Chris and Shannon are concerned, I think the new lovebirds will figure something out for themselves. It will take some time for Shannon to accept Chris’ weird best friend Bobby, and the same goes for Bobby, who may have to share his best friend with the new girl in Chris’ life. He may feel jealous or left out for the time being, but once he finds a girl for himself, I think things will be pretty sorted between them, and they can all hang out together.
