‘House On Eden’ Ending Explained & Film Summary: Is Celina Dead?

Published

House on Eden, directed by Kris Collins, is a found footage horror film centered around two paranormal investigators, Kris and Celina, accompanied by their cameraman, Jay. The trio rented a car and headed out to the outskirts to shoot a documentary film at a cemetery. They looked forward to their spooky adventure, and they were pretty much having the time of their lives on the road shooting themselves with the multiple cameras they’d brought along. Just when they’d almost reached their location, Kris took a detour. She explained that she’d heard about a haunted house known as the ‘House on Eden,’ and she thought they must check it out. Celina and Jay were a little disappointed by the fact that Kris didn’t even care to ask for their opinion. Celina had done the research and prepared a rough script for the video, and now that the location had changed, she felt she had worked hard for nothing. But Kris assured them that this little detour would be worth it. The ‘House on Eden’ hadn’t been covered by the most prominent paranormal investigators, making them the first ones to explore the place. She strongly believed this would help them get the traction online that they’d been waiting for. Celina and Jay ultimately decided to adapt to the new plan, as long as their documentary turned out to be mind-blowing.

Spoiler Alert

Was the house haunted?

Since the house was supposed to be in the middle of the dense woods, Kris, Celina, and Jay got out of their car and started to walk towards their destination. On their way to the house, they noticed a gigantic pyre and an abandoned shack. They didn’t know what to make of it, and the scariest part was a massive fire pit that they discovered near the house. It looked like people had been there very recently, but they couldn’t help but wonder how they’d learned about the place and why they chose to camp in such a remote spot. They didn’t have the answers, but they were curious to find out if the House on Eden was indeed haunted.

By the time they reached the old abandoned house, it was already dark. They made sure that there was no one inside before trespassing on the private property. The power was cut off, and it seemed no one had been there for a long, long time, but strangely the house was very well kept, and there was not even a speck of dust anywhere. Kris didn’t find much information about the house online; apparently a woman had gone missing from the house sixty years ago, and that was the only instance where the house was mentioned. They wondered if the spirit of the missing girl continued to haunt the place, and to find out, they had placed cameras all around the house. When Jay and Celina had stepped out of the house to look for one of their missing cameras, Kris fell off the stairs. Even though she’d seen a spirit, she insisted that the incident wasn’t really concerning, and they must continue to shoot. The three of them decided it would be best for them to spend the night in their van and return to the house the next morning to investigate. But strangely, the minute after they made that decision, they fell asleep.

What happened to Jay?

When Kris woke up the next morning, she found Jay asleep on the floor, and she was a little terrified when she discovered that Celina was standing by the window in a room upstairs and was chanting. It was only after Kris entered the room and tried to wake her up that Celina finally regained consciousness. It was pretty evident that there was something very wrong with the house, but Kris was not ready to leave. She thought there was too much potential, and she insisted that they must not miss out on the opportunity to record something that no one else had. Celina and Jay were tired of following Kris’ orders. She made it very clear that she believed she was the only one putting in the effort to make their endeavor successful, and Celina and Jay barely contributed. Jay was frustrated with Kris’ arrogance, especially after seeing how unbothered she was, even though Celina had been possessed for a brief minute. He decided it was not safe for them to stay there, and he walked out of the house.

Meanwhile, Celina and Kris continued shooting the paranormal documentary. They used various devices to communicate with the spirit(s) living in the house. All the devices that they used indicated the presence of a spirit(s). Celina freaked out when she heard a muffled scream from Kris’ room. She tried to open the door, but it was locked. Later, when Kris entered Celina’s room, she pretended as if everything was alright. We don’t know if Kris was lying about her paranormal experience just because she wanted to keep on shooting or if she was actually telling the truth and she didn’t have any recollection whenever she came in contact with the spirit. Perhaps her temper too was rooted in the paranormal.

Celina decided to contact Jay, and she heard his phone ringing on the porch. Kris didn’t think there was any need to worry about Jay, but Celina had had enough of her. She stepped out of the house and found Jay’s camera lying on the porch, along with his phone. He was missing. She decided to check his video footage, and she discovered that after hearing a loud thud, Jay had walked towards the front entrance to find out what was going on. She saw that a strange force had dragged him, and the video abruptly ended. Celina heard Jay scream from the woods, and she followed the voice. She left the camera on record and continued walking into the woods, and all of a sudden, she disappeared. House on Eden’s ending revealed that Jay had been killed.

Did Celina die in the end?

While using their special devices to communicate with the spirits, they’d learned that a spirit resided in a room upstairs and her name was Lilith. From a quick search on the internet, Kris discovered that Lilith was Adam’s first wife. She was said to have asserted her equality by refusing to submit herself to Adam. Since she’d failed to perform her duties as a wife, God had cast her out of paradise. Lilith is considered a breeder of evil spirits. Since she could never conceive, it had resulted in immense bitterness and hatred towards men, children, and pregnant women. The house had a portrait of Lilith—a snake wrapped around a seemingly innocent woman. Not surprising, considering it was the house on ‘Eden,’ the paradise where Adam and Eve once lived. The title can also be interpreted as Lilith’s Eden; after being banished from paradise, she perhaps had created one in the mortal world.

Kris was sleeping alone in one of the rooms upstairs when she heard a loud noise. She tried to find out what was going on, and she discovered Celina seated on an armchair, dressed in a white gown. Her eyes rolled back unnaturally, and she was picking at her skin and flesh. Kris tried to stop her, but Celina was long gone, and her body had been taken over/controlled by an evil spirit. Kris attempted to hide, but Celina/the spirit eventually found her locked in the washroom. Celina tried to drown Kris in what looked like a bathtub of blood-infused water. But Kris survived. She gasped for air as she tried to get out of the bathtub. She was desperate to hide away from Celina, and she ended up walking into a hidden basement. In House on Eden’s ending, we witnessed Celina’s lifeless body, confirming that after her body was used as a medium, she was sacrificed.

Who was the woman in the basement?

When Celina had gone through Kris’ video footage, she’d noticed something strange. To buy a few essential items, Kris had gone to a local department store. She’d asked the lady at the counter about the House on Eden and the girl who’d disappeared sixty years ago. She’d confirmed that the story Kris had read was true, but she didn’t really get into the details. On her way out of the store, an elderly woman in a wheelchair looked at Kris in a mysterious way. She’d overheard their conversation, and before Kris left the store, she congratulated her. Kris was left confused, and the video had ended abruptly. During Kris’ argument with Celina on the porch, before Celina headed out to find Jay, Kris blurted out that she was pregnant and that was why she’d been throwing up and falling sick. Even though it’s not directly addressed in the film, the child was possibly Jay’s, and maybe that was the reason why Kris felt frustrated and stuck. This revelation suggests that the old woman at the store knew about her pregnancy, even though it was impossible to tell. It’s not too far-fetched to assume that the old woman might have been a Lilith worshipper, and perhaps Kris finding out about the house and her decision to go there while she was pregnant might not have been completely coincidental. Maybe an evil force was guiding her to the place, and she felt a certain compulsion to stay there even though her colleagues had repeatedly told her they didn’t feel safe there.

From the blurry, shaky videos, it looked like as soon as Kris entered the basement, she saw a naked old woman waiting for her there. She lost consciousness, and the next thing we know is that the old woman sacrificed herself (she slit her throat) and allowed her blood to drip onto Kris’ belly before she quietly resigned herself to her fate next to Kris. Immediately after, Kris got back on her feet, but she was not the young, ambitious woman who had come to a haunted house hoping to record a chilling documentary. Her body was possessed by Lilith’s spirit. The old woman was possibly the girl who’d gone missing. She likely had stumbled upon the house, and Lilith’s spirit took over her body. Maybe, just like Kris, she too was pregnant, and that was the reason they were targeted. Lilith’s unfulfilled desire to become a mother was satisfied by possessing the bodies of pregnant women. She needed a new body to transfer her spirit to, and she had chosen Kris.

Who were the women in the final scene?

During House on Eden’s ending, Lilith had possessed Kris’ body. Her pupils were dilated, her spirit had left her body, and she had surrendered herself to Lilith’s cause. Remember the gigantic pyre that Kris, Celine, and Jay had come across before finding the House on Eden? Turns out, it was used for  sacrificial rituals. Kris, possessed by Lilith, stepped out of the house and joined a group of women who’d gathered around the pyre. It looked like they belonged to a cult who worshipped Lilith. The woman at the department store was likely part of the cult, and they had foreseen that a young woman would soon enter the house—her body intended as a vessel for Lilith to inhabit. Maybe this had been a tradition of the remote village for centuries. The women who’d gathered there were possibly born into the cult. After possessing the pregnant bodies, Lilith experienced the joy of giving birth, and if the newborn was a girl, she was kept alive, but if it was a boy, Lilith perhaps feasted on it. If we assume that the last body Lilith possessed was sixty years ago, then the only logical conclusion is that the children she bore were inhabited by demonic spirits—granting them immortality and allowing the clan or cult to grow in both number and power.

The women had dragged Celina and Jay’s bodies next to the pyre, and they were covered in blood. Presumably, their remains were cremated in the fire. They prepared Kris for the ritual—they brushed her hair and coated her body with Celina and Jay’s blood. Maybe the ritual involved consuming human flesh and blood. The ending explains why the house was so clean even though it seemed no one lived in it—the women tidied the place regularly, and they had been keeping an eye on Kris, Celina, and Jay all along. The fire pit that they’d come across before they found their way to the house was probably the spot where a recent sacrifice had taken place, but the missing cases never really made it to the headlines.
