‘How To Sell Drugs Online (Fast)’ Season 4 Recap: Who Is M2000?

Published

The fourth and final season of Netflix’s How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) follows a similar pattern to its predecessor, where we see the lead protagonist, Moritz Zimmermann, the trouble magnet, who makes things complicated for everyone around him. If you have seen the previous iterations of the show, then you might be well aware of the reason why Moritz surrounds himself with new troubles every now and then. He has an itch to become a successful entrepreneur like his inspirations, but all he ever was able to design was an app to sell drugs online. I mean, he didn’t exactly write the codes for “MyDrugs,” and it has always been Lenny Sander, his best friend, who did the heavy lifting, but it took a long time for Moritz to finally realize that he needs to stop running after fame and money and take a moment to introspect about what he really wants to do in life, and maybe success will follow automatically. The final reason is mostly centered around how Moritz came to such a realization and what he does next to rectify his past mistakes. With that said, let’s recap all the major events of season 4, and if you are looking specifically for the show’s ending, you can read here.

Spoiler Alert

Moritz Helps The Cops To Get An Early Release

In the previous season, as soon as the authorities found out about the “MyDrugs” app, they quickly started an investigation to track down its creators, and in the end, it was Moritz who took the fall in order to save his best friend, Lenny, and not-so-best friend, Dan, from getting arrested. After his confession, Moritz was sentenced to eight years in prison; however, in season 4, he cracked a deal with a cybercrime officer, Bene, so he could get an early release. Bene asked Moritz to install spyware on his designed app so that they could hack the phone of anyone who had installed “MyDrugs” and was still using it to take drug orders. And yes, he even took his Bitcoin account, so Moritz lost everything he had earned by selling drugs online. Due to his cooperation and good behavior, Moritz was finally let go, and he was released 4 years after his imprisonment.

Moritz Finds Out the Truth About BonusLife

As soon as Moritz was released from prison, he decided to get his life back on track and start working on a legal startup with his best friend, Lenny. However, as he returned home, he found out that Lenny had been working for Dan for his startup BonusLife, an online platform that sells health supplements to gamers who are too lazy to cook a decent meal for themselves. Moritz was heartbroken, as he wanted Lenny to be on his team and work with him on his venture, not Dan’s, which was the reason why he lashed out at Dan during his welcome party, and Dan, trying to maintain his image, ended up offering Moritz the position of junior engineer along with 2% shares in the company. At first Moritz refused to work under Dan, but once he failed to find any other job and couldn’t work in a bank, something his dad arranged for him, he decided to take Dan’s offer so he could work in the same building as Lenny and coin a plan to convince his friend to leave BonusLife so that they could start a new startup together. Well, Moritz was quite confident about his plan until he found out that Lenny and Dan were equal partners in BonusLife, which means it wasn’t just Dan’s startup but Lenny’s as well, and he wouldn’t be leaving it anytime soon. It crushed Moritz’s resolve once again, and he decided to steal the company from the two friends for whom he took the fall and went to jail.

Ersan Brings New Hope

In prison, Moritz had befriended a muscle guy named Ersan who promised to contact Moritz as soon as he was released so that they could start a legal business together. After his release, Ersan paid a visit to Moritz and told him that Behzat Aygun, the owner of the Brofrost frozen food company, had promised him a loan to start a venture, as back in the day, he went to jail for that Turkish businessman. At the moment, Moritz literally didn’t have any idea for a startup. He was completely lost without Lenny; however, when Moritz found out that Dan wanted to take away Moritz’s 2 percent share in the company so he couldn’t sit in on the shareholders meeting, Moritz finally decided to take revenge. Moritz knew that Dan and Lenny were looking for an investor to take over 49 percent of the company, and this was when he contacted Ersan again and asked him to take the loan from Behzat so that they could send in a fake investor to buy shares in BonusLife. With Moritz’s 2 percent share, it would increase their stake in the company to 51 percent, thereby making them the new owners of Brofrost. Hearing Moritz’s plan, Ersan quickly arranged a meeting with Behzat, and this was when the real trouble began.

Behzat Is The Drug Dealer

Bene and his partner, Amira, from the cybercrimes unit, had been tracking drug dealers’ messages with the help of Moritz’s spyware. However, the traffickers weren’t aware of the spyware and suspected that there was a snitch in their gang working for the police, which was why they started shooting their own men. So far five people had turned, and Bene knew that there was a connection between the drug dealers and the five murders, but he didn’t have enough evidence to support the theory. He tried to enlist Moritz’s help once again, but he refused to be a part of any of it. Bene knew that Moritz was hiding something and started following him as he sneaked out of the house to meet Behzat.

While Moritz and Ersan were sitting with Behzat in his warehouse, Bene sneaked into the building to find why a 21-year-old lad was meeting with a Turkish businessman. Inside the premise, Bene came across a packet of drugs, which made it clear that Behzat’s Brofrost was just a front for his drug network. However, before Bene could raise the alarm, one of Behzat’s men hit him in the head and later shot him dead in front of Moritz. Moritz had found a packet of drugs as well, and Behzat thought the lad knew too much to let him live. He was going to shoot Moritz when suddenly Moritz came up with a plan and told Behzat about the spyware on their phones. He offered to develop an encrypted device for them with a secure network so the police would be able to trace their messages. I guess Behzat finally connected the dots and came to an understanding that there wasn’t any mole in the gang; instead, it was the spyware that was giving the police intel about their locations. He really needed an encrypted messaging app, “BroChat,” so the police could no longer bust their consignment. Behzat gave Moritz one week to design the app.

Moritz Seeks Kira’s Help

Moritz knew that designing a secure network was not his kind of thing, and only Lenny’s wife, Kira, would pull off such a task. He tried to convince Dan to let Lenny sanction a similar project in the BonusLife, but Lenny said it would take him at least a month to create such an extensive network, but Moritz didn’t have that much time on hand. The cuckoo clock was already ticking. This was when Moritz started following Kira, who worked at Fritzi’s bar. Moritz found out that Kira was trying to secure a job in Silicon Valley, as she didn’t want to spend the rest of her life waiting tables. And it was likely she hadn’t told Lenny about her plans, as it would be difficult for him to leave his startup to start anew in California. Moritz took advantage of the situation and tried to blackmail Kira so she could help them to develop the secure server. At first, Kira believed that Moritz had a chance, but she was so very wrong. A narcissist will always remain a narcissist who will not mind throwing his own friends under the bus to save his own life.

Moritz and Ersan get the loan

As soon as Moritz handed over the encrypted device to Behzat, the Turkish drug dealer gave him and Ersan what they had been seeking to set up a new business. Moritz gave that money to Wheeler, the fake investor they had hired, who would put in money in BonusLife on Moritz’s behalf and turn the company over to him as soon as the deal had been signed. Things went as planned, but soon Moritz came across a shocking truth that forced him to point a gun at Behzat and wage war against the Turkish Mafia.

Behzat Tries To Kill Lisa Novak

Lisa was the girl Moritz became a drug dealer for. I mean, not really, but he did want to impress her in college, and that’s how it all began. Now, in the fourth season, Lisa worked as a journalist for a newspaper and was looking for her next big case so she could give a boost to her career. She started with investigating the five dead bodies in her hometown and was soon able to draw the connection between these murders and Behzat. The police commissioner, Welter, who was on Behzat’s payroll, informed the drug dealer how a journalist was planning to expose him in the media, which was why Behzat asked his men to finish Lisa and her boss. Now, Moritz, who had planted a back door on every encrypted device, could access the secure chat, and that was how he found out about the hit on Lisa and her boss. Moritz knew that Lisa had been investigating Behzat and Ersan and wanted to help her so she could expose these criminals, but before any of it could happen, Lisa’s boss died in a car explosion triggered by a bomb that forced Lisa to go into hiding and seek help from her college friends, Kira and Fritzi.

Moritz Messes Things Up Again

Moritz believed that Behzat’s men killed Lisa, and therefore, in a fit of anger, he stole Ersan’s van and arrived at his warehouse, pointing a gun at him for killing the love of his life. Well, long story short, Moritz couldn’t pull the trigger, and Behzat locked up both Moritz and Ersan. Now, in the beginning of the season, Moritz’s sister, Marie, had asked him to share a selfie on the BeReal social networking app so that the family was aware of Moritz’s whereabouts, but when Moritz failed to update an image, his father, Jens, and Marie quickly arrived at the police station and filed a complaint with Amira. Marie had put a tracker on his brother’s phone so she knew where he was. And when Amira and Jens arrived at the warehouse, they spotted Bene’s car, the officer who had been missing for the past few days. Amira suspected that Bene might be held captive inside the Brofrost and tried to seek permission from Welter to raid the place. Welter first tried to convince Amira to let the matter go, but when she refused to walk away, he quickly informed Behzat, thereby giving the drug dealers the chance to escape. They were about to kill Moritz and Ersan when suddenly one of Behzat’s men suggested that they might need the server on which all their chats were stored so that the police wouldn’t be able to locate their stash houses. He also suggested that they might need Moritz to set up another secure channel of communication so that they could restart their business, and that was why Behzat decided to keep Moritz alive for the time being.

Moritz Sacrifices Himself To Save Lenny

While Moritz and Behzat’s men were stealing the server from BonusLife HQ, Lenny and Dan spotted them, and Behzat’s men had no option but to abduct them along with Moritz. This was actually the first scene of season 4, where we saw Behzat’s men bringing Dan, Lenny, and Moritz to an undisclosed location in the middle of the desert, where Behzat asked these three friends to set up the encrypted channel so they could continue their dealings. However, Moritz knew that Behzat would kill them as soon as they had finished the work, which was why they started stalling it. Meanwhile, Moritz pitched an idea that Behzat should keep Lenny and Dan alive and use their company, BonusLife, as a front for his drug dealings, just like he had been taking the cover of Brofrost. Behzat wanted Moritz to lead the company, but he said that he already had a criminal record and wouldn’t be a good fit for this kind of business. Meanwhile, Ersan, the new owner of BonusLife, was quite agitated by the idea because he always wanted to start something legal, but with Behzat using BonusLife to cover his crimes, he would no longer be able to lead a righteous life.

Behzat put a lot of thought into Moritz’s suggestion and finally decided to let Dan go. He kept Lenny and Moritz captive so that they could finish the work, but some time later, he understood that Moritz knew nothing about it and Lenny was the mastermind behind the encrypted devices. He tried to convince Lenny to shoot Moritz, as he was the root of all his troubles, but suddenly Ersan started a fire in the building, giving Lenny and Moritz a chance to escape the drug dealer’s wrath. They stole a vehicle and traveled a distance to finally find out that they were out of fuel. This was the moment when Moritz decided to stay back and stop Behzat and his gang, giving Lenny a chance to escape.

In season 4’s ending, Moritz finally confronted Behzat and once again pointed a gun at him but couldn’t pull the trigger. He dropped the gun, which suddenly fired a shot, leading to a chaos in which the drug dealers shot themselves to death, leaving just Moritz and Ersan alive. Here, Moritz told Ersan his plan to fake his death, as he didn’t want to go back to his past life and create more troubles for his friend and family. Ersan understood what Moritz was trying to do and therefore helped his friend in the best possible manner he could.

Lenny Returns Home

After Lenny went missing, Kira, Lisa, and Fritzi started an investigation of their own and came across an encrypted device on Welter’s hand, implying that he had been working for the drug mafia all along. The three girls finally set a trap to get a confession out of Welter and force him to tell them the location of Behzat’s hideout so they could find Lenny, Dan, and Moritz. In the end, Kira recorded Welter’s confession and locked him in his car’s trunk while sending a message to Amira to find the evidence against Welter and his partners in crime so she could start an official investigation against Brofrost. Later, the three traveled to the location in the desert where they found Lenny lying unconscious. They brought him to the hospital and saved his life.

A Happy Ending

After faking his death, Moritz invested his Behzat’s money to buy a server farm on an isolated oil rig so he could stay away from civilization and no longer complicate the lives of people around him. From here he recorded a last message for his friends and sent it to his sister to hand it over to Lenny and Dan so they could move on with their lives and stop searching for M1000. All the friends and family attended Moritz’s funeral, and as soon as things settled down, Lenny told Dan that he was leaving the company and shifting to America so his wife could find the work that she had been looking for. Throughout these years, Lenny believed that BonusLife was a profitable venture, but in the end, he found out that Dan had tweaked the numbers for the investors, and their startup was struggling to make the day’s end. In short, they were never successful, which convinced him to give Kira a chance to try her luck in Silicon Valley. With Lenny leaving the company, Ersan took his place and started working with Dan so that they could finally make the company profitable in the near future. As far as Lisa was concerned, I guess, she would write a detailed report on the Brofrost and the five murders the Turkish mafia had committed. It might help her to rise in her career and find a better job at a larger media company, considering her old boss was already dead.

Moritz Is Back

In season 4’s ending, while Lenny was enjoying a last dinner with his friends, he received an invitation on the BeReal app. A username “M2000” had sent him a request. It was quite obvious that it was Moritz trying to connect with his old buddy, but what did he want this time? I guess he just wanted Lenny to know that he wasn’t dead so he could move on in life and no longer blame himself for his death. But if he’s up to something once again, then I am not sure what new mess he would bring with him this time.
