Invincible Season 3’s finale was mostly an intense battle, with Mark, Oliver, and Eve on one side and Conquest on the other. Since Mark had “failed” to prepare Earth for the Viltrumite Expansion program, Conquest arrived to take it by any means necessary. While Mark took the brunt of Conquest’s wrath, Oliver and Eve contributed in their own ways. Oliver almost died, and Eve technically did die in Mark’s arms, which caused Mark to go absolutely berserk. Still, he was no match for Conquest. It was only after Eve made a miraculous return and scorched Conquest’s whole body that Mark got the better of the supervillain and bludgeoned him to death with his own head. I am sure those who were heartbroken by the episode of The Walking Dead where Negan (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) bashed Glenn’s (played by Steven Yeun) skull felt really glad to see Mark (voiced by Yeun) cave in Conquest’s (voiced by Morgan) skull. But was Conquest actually dead? What can we expect from Season 4? What’s the meaning of the mid-credits scene? Let’s find out.
Spoiler Alert
Eve’s Newly Unlocked Powers
Eve gave a pretty clear explanation for how she managed to have her face torn apart and her guts ripped out by Conquest and yet make a triumphant return from the dead. Basically, she is too OP to exist in this mortal realm. So, the GDA probably trained her mind to forget about the fact that she had the ability to manipulate not just inorganic matter, but organic matter as well. If you have seen the Atom Eve special, you know that when Eve learned that Steven Erickson was conducting experiments upon her birth mother to create a superhero similar to her, she went into god mode and nearly reduced Erickson and his scientist minions to atoms. Since watching that special, fans have regularly complained about why the show never really allowed Eve to go as bonkers as she did in that one hour of television. Well, now you all have your answer. The showrunners weren’t holding her back randomly; there was a plot-based reason for that. The GDA couldn’t risk having a superhero who could turn people into goop just because she got overwhelmed. Hence, they put some kind of inhibitor in her psyche that kept her from accessing the most dangerous aspect of her powers. It’s only after she experienced death that she got to unleash it, heal herself, and burn the skin off of Conquest’s body. There’s no doubt about the fact that we’re all thankful that she did that, or else Mark would’ve been a goner. However, I think Mark and the GDA are about to have a Phoenix (yes, the one from Marvel) situation on their hands. You see, right after the moment where Mark and Eve got romantic with each other, and Eve used her powers to take off Mark’s clothes and put them aside in a neat bundle, the costume began to melt. It’s possible that that was a result of steaminess in the room due to Mark and Eve’s sexual adventures. But I don’t know why I feel that that’s a hint for the dangers of Eve’s limitless powers. Previously, everything that Eve conjured or altered stayed that way until she did something to it. If things are starting to melt and morph due to something that’s happening to Eve, or something she has on the back of her mind, then that’s worrisome.
Rudy Is Now Rex
If my memory serves me right, then the last time we’ve seen a funeral scene in Invincible was for Dupli-Kate, but then she made a surprise return because, well, she wasn’t dead. But I don’t think Rex is coming back. Well, at least the version that we’ve seen so far in the show is gone. If some other version of him who wanted to live the non-superhero life with the version of his Rae in his world, but didn’t get to because she wasn’t into that, decides to arrive in this reality and start a life with the Rae that we know, then we’ll see Rex in action again. Until then, I guess the writers are bidding adieu to the character. However, I have to mention that the gravity of Rex’s sacrifice was kind of undercut by the finale for 2 reasons: Rudy and Eve. I mean, I get what Rudy was going for by changing his name to Rex; he wanted to keep a part of him alive and ensure that his memory wasn’t forgotten in the sands of time. But I suppose a tomb, a picture, or just a nameplate with Rex’s name would’ve fulfilled the same purpose, right? Is everyone supposed to refer to Rex as Rudy? The guy who just died? That just sounds so awkward. I hope somebody just tells Rudy, point blank, that while his intentions were noble, the execution of his plan to commemorate Rex was a little idiotic; hence, nobody is going to call him Rex; they’re going to keep calling him Rudy. And then there’s the sex scene. Eve was there pouring her heart out in front of the GDA, the Guardians, and Mark. Eve was talking about how Rex was her “first” when it came to a lot of things, and even though he cheated on her, she was heartbroken about this loss. I don’t think there was anything wrong with Mark saying that he was really happy that Eve was alive and talking. However, to cut straight to them getting naughty just deflated the somberness of Rex’s funeral. This is one of those rare moments where a death seems permanent, and yet it’s undercut by these nonsensical story beats. That’s just what I think.
Conquest Is Alive
Mark had told Cecil to burn Conquest’s body so that there was no chance of him coming back to life and causing more devastation. Cecil did say that that was a good idea. But what did he do instead? He took Conquest’s body to a facility in the middle of nowhere, put it in a 400-ton block of tungsten alloy with only Conquest’s head protruding out of the thing, and surrounded the entire place with explosives. Why? Because Cecil hoped that when Conquest’s mind and body would inevitably heal (Viltrumites are built like that, I guess), he’d reveal all the secrets of the Viltrumite Expansion. I have always thought that Cecil is like Batman, and he has at least 10 backup plans for any outcome. However, this one seems a tad too idiotic. He has seen what this animal can do. No amount of tungsten alloy or explosives is stopping that thing from wreaking havoc again. He isn’t going to reveal anything about the Viltrumites no matter how much pain he has to endure since the truth about their race is that there are only 50 of them left and they are defeatable. And I’m certain that he’s not going to turn into a good guy, like Nolan has. The guy’s name is Conquest, for crying out loud! I genuinely don’t know what Cecil is thinking here. Sure, Mark has no way of knowing about this until Conquest breaks free. And if that happens, which I assume it will (I haven’t read the comics), Cecil will have no one but himself to blame for it.
Battle Beast Is Alive
After Allen the Alien freed Battle Beast from his cell in that Viltrumite prison in order to save Nolan from getting killed by those 2 Viltrumite executioners, the lion-like creature seemingly floated away into the vastness of space with one of the Viltrumites. I’m sure everyone was wondering what the outcome of that fight was. Well, there’s your answer. Battle Beast apparently shredded the Viltrumite executioner into pieces and then went into hibernation mode. When he was randomly located by an alien race, he awoke from his slumber, probably looking to find another potentially unbeatable foe. Yeah, Battle Beast’s whole thing is that he wants to meet someone who can defeat him. He was under the impression that a pure-blooded Viltrumite would be his final destination. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, his quest continues. The aliens that “saved” him clearly don’t seem all that intimidating. So, maybe Battle Beast will become their ruler and use their resources to look into the farthest reaches of the universe, maybe even the multiverse, to satiate his desire to be vanquished. I have a feeling that he’ll meet his match once he comes across a variant of himself. Now, that’s a fight to the death that I want to watch.
The Technicians and Angstrom Levy
The Technicians’ dynamic with Angstrom Levy was a big question mark. Maybe it still is. When that wretched trio found Angstrom, I don’t think he was in a position to negotiate a deal. So, I guess the Technicians saw him making portals to different dimensions and thought that if they could make him whole again, he’d be of great use to them. When their work was done, Angstrom probably said that he’d do whatever they wanted him to do once he was done with Prime Mark. Then Angstrom built his Mark army and drones and went off to show Prime Mark who’s boss. When Prime Mark cut off his hand, Angstrom returned to the Technicians and demanded that they help him with his arm so that he could have another go at Prime Mark. But that’s when the technicians put their foot down and demanded that Angstrom hold up his end of the deal if he wanted to get back to tormenting Prime Mark. Angstrom is a desperate man. So, of course, he agreed to take the Technicians to a world where they could probably build their empire, in the hopes that that’d allow him to resume his mission. Now, even though the technicians have repaired Angstrom’s hand, it doesn’t look like they’re in the mood to let him assemble another army of evil Invincibles and turn Earth into a hellscape. They are likely going to hold onto him as long as they are not satisfied. There’s a pro to it as well as a con. The pro is that if Angstrom is busy doing stuff for the Technicians, he isn’t going to annoy Mark and Earth. The con is that in case the Technicians are using Angstrom to build some galaxy-conquering mechanism, then Mark, the GDA, the Guardians, and everyone else in the multiverse will wish that Angstrom was their only headache.
Sinclair’s Invinci-ReAnimen
Sinclair’s ReAnimen project was a major reason for the conflict between Mark and Cecil, but there’s no denying that those ReAnimen came in handy quite a few times, especially when Mark and Eve were cornered by two uber-powered Invincibles. In case you were wondering what happened to the dead bodies of all those evil Marks that were killed during the battle of the Invincibles, yeah, they’ve been delivered to Sinclair’s lab, who is turning them into ReAnimen or Invinci-ReAnimen. He couldn’t get them ready for Mark’s fight with Conquest, but the thing is that the moment Mark realizes how Cecil has repurposed his variants, he is going to blow a gasket. I mean, Cecil is already walking on thin ice trying to resurrect Conquest. I won’t be surprised if Mark goes for the kill if he thinks that Cecil is way too immoral and unethical. Also, is there a possibility that maybe Sinclair has fitted every single one of the ReAnimen and the Invinci-ReAnimen with something that’ll cause them to do his bidding instead of Cecil’s? Has Cecil thought about that, especially given how he thinks about every outcome all the time? Well, he should, because that’s something that can totally happen, and on that day, he’ll wish that Mark is in the mood to help him out instead of leaving him to his devices.
The Sequids
In the 2nd season of Invincible, one lonesome Sequid managed to reach Earth undetected by laying dormant inside astronaut Rus Livingston’s stomach. The ending of Season 3 shows that the Sequid-possessed Livingston has given birth to hundreds, maybe thousands, of Sequids who have taken control of a lot of people in Chicago and are poised to take over the rest of the country, possibly even the whole world. So, it looks like the Sequids are going to be the biggest threat of the next season. It’s highly likely that they won’t announce their presence until they are sure that they can carry out their plans of conquering the planet without facing the full might of the Guardians of the Globe and the GDA. So, I am expecting them to only show up in the mid-credits scenes throughout the 1st half of Season 3 and then finally unleash hell throughout the 2nd half. Given how the world is in shambles currently, I don’t think the authorities will really notice that a major part of the population has taken to the sewers; they’ll just think they died at the hands of the evil Invincibles or Conquest. The Guardians have faced off with the Sequids before. Hence, it’ll be interesting to see what they’ve learned and what new strategies they’ll come up with to defeat this invasive species. And I guess this will give Shapesmith a chance to redeem himself. I mean, he is kind of the cause for the Sequid Invasion. Am I smelling a big sacrifice moment for Shapesmith? Yes, why not? He has been mostly treated as a joke. Hence, I think he is going to make his mark by consuming all the Sequids on Earth and throwing himself into the Sun, or something like that.
Damien Darkblood in Mid-Credits Scene
In case you have forgotten, Damien Darkblood was looking into the death of the Guardians of the Globe and Omni-Man’s involvement. He was warned not to do so by Cecil, but when he refused to comply, Cecil banished him to hell by combining magic with tech. Damien has been missing since Season 1, but he hasn’t been sitting idly. As per the mid-credits of Invincible Season 3, he has been conspiring with his master to return to the realm of the mortals. Apparently, Damien has located a “surface-dweller” whose heart has been corrupted enough to make him the perfect vessel for the demon. Yes, Damien does specify that the individual in question is male. My guess is that he is talking about Mark because, during the concluding moments of the episode, he told Oliver that he is abandoning his “no-kill” policy. Sure, he was talking about killing bad guys. However, it’s possible that he is more broken than he thinks he is, and maybe Damien and his master are going to utilize that by summoning him to hell and then use him as a vessel to take over the surface. If it’s not Mark, then my money is on Powerplex. Even though that guy is on the surface, he is technically in hell, thereby making him the perfect candidate for some demonic possession. If that happens, we’re going to get one hell of a rematch between Powerplex and Invincible. Anyway, those are just my thoughts on the ending of Invincible Season 3 and what we can expect from Season 4, which is currently in production. What are your thoughts on the show? Let me know in the comments below.
