Spoiler Alert

What Is The Movie About?

Legasi: Bomba begins with the Fire and Rescue Department in the state of Sabah in Malaysia receiving an emergency order from their superiors informing them of a group of tourists having gone missing in the mountains in the region. As a team of firefighters is sent to find the three missing people in the mountains, they find one of their backpacks, and upon following the dangerous trail up, are able to find the tourists too. The tourists had gotten trapped on a rock shelf, having lost their climbing gear, and were unable to move because of the impending bad weather. The firefighters bravely climb up the mountainside to reach the shelf and provide first aid to the tourists, while their helicopter soon reaches the spot to take all of them back to safety.

Although one of the officers is left behind on the shelf, as the rotors of the helicopter cause rocks to come loose and fall downwards, making the aircraft have to sway out of the way, the unit chief sternly instructs the pilot to go back to rescue the officer. The mission is ultimately a success, as the trapped man is able to jump onto the helicopter after having saved all the tourists as well. Months later, the same Fire and Rescue Department officers, who are also technically firefighters, are seen once more, as they are introduced as the protagonists of the film. The young firefighter who had been momentarily trapped on the rock shelf is Amir, a skilled officer with a promising future ahead of him, while the unit leader who had forced the pilot to go back for Amir is Eddy, more popularly known as Chief among his unit members.

After an extended period of deliberation, Eddy finally accepts a promotion that will make him the senior officer of the Southern Division, meaning that he will have to leave his current unit and be away from Kuala Lumpur as well. While his unwillingness to leave his current unit had been keeping Eddy from agreeing to the promotion, the benefits that the new position will bring to his professional life, and also the prospect of finally living together with his wife again, make him change his mind. Thus, Eddy hands over the mantle to his dear friend and subordinate, Amir, who is mentally ready to become the unit leader but still feels sad at his friend’s decision to leave. Before leaving, though, Eddy has to lead his unit on one last mission when a deadly fire breaks out at a factory, but this soon turns into a terribly tragic event.

How does Chief Eddy die?

During one of their training drills, the Fire and Rescue Department unit is alerted of a level-4 fire at an industrial factory in Kuantan, and they immediately rush to the place to deal with the situation. Other units of the department also have to be called to the spot, as the fire needs to be contained and workers trapped inside the facility also need to be rescued, all at the same time. Because of the vastness of the factory, and the interconnected pipelines between the three stations, the fire can easily spread from the source, which is station 1, to the other spots. The three stations are also connected to a 4th station, which is really more of a township where the factory workers and their families live, called Kincang town. Although the fire is currently restricted to station 1, it can very well spread to Kincang town in a short time, and for this, some units of the department are immediately deployed to evacuate the township.

Because of the local forces’ swift action, the fire at the source is reported to have been brought under control, but the factory’s head engineer clarifies that there is still a high risk of an explosion taking place at station 2 unless the pressure contained in the pipelines is vented. Therefore, Eddy’s unit is assigned to take control of station 2 and manually release the pressure by opening the valves connected to the pipeline, which is naturally quite a risky task. The engineer warns that if the pressure accidentally bursts out, causing an explosion while the firefighters are still trying to open the valves, they will surely be caught in it and be severely injured in the ensuing fire, if not killed. But the team is able to work quickly and avert an explosion in station 2, and now the same needs to be done at station 3 as well.

Unfortunately, this is when things go wrong, when the fire suddenly spreads directly from station 1, blowing up station 2 despite all the efforts of the firefighters earlier, and heading straight towards station 3, where Eddy and his team are desperately trying to release the valves. Although the department head orders the firefighters to evacuate station 3 because of the high chance of it exploding, Eddy refuses to step away, as he knows that doing so would lead to Kincang town being destroyed by the spreading fire as well. This heroic decision ultimately saves station 3 from exploding, and the fire at the factory is finally contained, but it also claims the life of Chief Eddy. While opening the valve, some of the pressure had burst out, causing Eddy’s body to catch fire, but he kept at his job by sacrificing his life to save others. Thus, the unit loses their beloved Chief Eddy, but to Amir, the loss is much more personal.

How does Amir cope with his grief?

Amir has to go through the painful experience of going to Eddy’s house to inform his wife and young son about his death, which is truly heartbreaking for him. Looking at the clueless face of the young boy, who does not even understand what his father’s death means, is particularly difficult for Amir, for he too had once gone through a similar situation. Amir’s father, who had been a firefighter as well, had been killed in an accident while on service, and he still vividly remembers the day when his mother received a similar call that informed her of her husband’s death. Little Amir was no older than Eddy’s son is, and so he could not even understand the reason for his mother’s dramatic reaction to the phone call and what it meant to be told that he could never see his father again.

Amir still had a loving and caring grandfather to rely on, who generously supported his dream of becoming a firefighter to honor his father’s legacy, but Eddy’s wife and son possibly have nobody by their side. This is why the entire unit promises to stand by them, asking the grieving woman to get in touch with them whenever required. But Amir just cannot get over his memories with Eddy and often recalls the day when the chief had saved his life atop the mountain in Sabah, as seen in the opening sequence of the film. He is consumed by a sense of extreme guilt for having failed to return the favor and save his dear friend, as Amir had indeed tried to jump in and save Eddy from the fire. But the truth of the matter was that Eddy was already too burned to be saved, and had Amir gone to rescue him, he too would have been fatally injured. This is why the other firefighters had stopped Amir from rushing in, but he now feels extremely guilty for what he believes to be his failure.

Amir even has an ugly spat with his unit members for having stopped him from saving Eddy, because of which the department head temporarily suspends him, advising him to take a break from the job and spend a few days away. He soon visits his grandfather’s house in the countryside, where the first few days are quite difficult, as Amir is reminded of his father and the similarity between his death and that of Eddy. But he also starts to distract himself through various charitable activities along with a new friend named Mustika, and eventually Amir is ready to return to service, finally assuming the role of unit leader, as per the wish of Eddy.

What was the reason behind the fire at TEXVIN?

The fire that had tragically killed Eddy and injured hundreds of others had taken place at an industrial factory of the TEXVIN oil and gas company, and the authorities soon launched a detailed investigation into what had caused the accident. The head of the Fire and Rescue Department, Anuar, is invited to the company’s headquarters to discuss the matter. He informs the CEO of the company that a suspicious van had been found by the firefighters at the site of the explosion, which had been wrecked by the impact but seemed to have been out of place. The CEO has her team look into the matter and reports that the van had been seen on CCTV footage when it had checked into the highly guarded area. But it turns out, the details given by the driver and the two workers inside the van were all fake, suggesting that they had sneaked into the facility just to leave the van there for some suspicious reason.

While this discussion is going on, a team of what looks like security workers make their way into the TEXVIN building as well, posing as if they are carrying something important in their vans, which is seen to be a large time bomb. In reality, a group of terrorists has targeted TEXVIN, and it was the same group that had caused the explosion at the factory. They had faked their identities to pretend to be factory employees, left the van, which had been holding a powerful time bomb, and left the area, and the explosion had then caused further damage at the facility. Similarly, they now intend to destroy the TEXVIN headquarters as well, because of which they detonate a powerful bomb inside the building, causing an immediate emergency situation. Legasi: Bomba does not delve any deeper into the terrorist group and their demands, as we are only supposed to see them as villains who want to destroy the company and kill innocent civilians.

Did Amir and Jordan ultimately work together?

At the very beginning of the film, a new officer named Jordan joins the unit, and Amir is clearly quite wary of him, mostly because Jordan defeats him in a race as part of the initiation ceremony. Over the next few days, Amir’s hostility towards Jordan only keeps growing, as the latter takes some time to get used to following such strict orders at the department. Incidentally, Jordan is among the two firefighters who stopped Amir from jumping in to save Eddy foolishly, meaning that he actually saved his life. But Amir is extremely angry at Jordan for having stopped him, and he blames the new officer for the unit’s inability to save Eddy from dying. Therefore, their relationship is heated after the incident, even though Jordan never really does anything wrong. It is also then expected that their initial battle of egos is ultimately going to turn into a strong bond of friendship and camaraderie. This finally happens towards the end, when all the units of the department are involved in trying to contain the horrific fire at the TEXVIN building. As the experts soon reveal, the fire and pressure trapped inside the building need to be released somehow in order to avert a nasty explosion that will not only kill everyone trapped inside but also wipe out the entire neighborhood. As Amir leads his unit, he comes up with the plan of blowing a hole in the somewhat damaged roof by making use of the elevator so that the flames can be diverted out of the building, and the fire can also be dealt with more effectively. It is Jordan who accompanies Amir on this dangerous mission, as they make sure that the hole in the roof can be made. Both of them risk their lives together for the sake of their friends and the inhabitants of the area, and this experience ultimately establishes a great bond of friendship between them.

What Happens To Amir And His Unit?

Amir and his unit’s brave efforts finally save the day as they are able to contain and eventually put out the fire at the TEXVIN building, which brings back normalcy in the neighborhood. The entire department is praised for their exceptional efforts, and Amir specifically receives commendation for having carried out his acts of bravado. He is awarded a special certificate and also an Honor phone for his contributions, as the Chinese phone company has sponsored part of the film. Amir also seemingly starts a romantic relationship with Mustika, as they finally seem to acknowledge the romantic chemistry that had been growing between them for quite some time. Although nothing specific is shown to suggest this relationship, it is evident that Amir and Mustika love and respect each other a lot, especially after the horrific events. Finally, Legasi: Bomba ends with photos and reports of real rescue operations carried out by the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department, as the film is dedicated to their valiant efforts.
