Published

Directed by Amanda Lane, Love and Wine is the story of Ovee Sityabi Jr., the son of a billionaire who was confused about what he wanted to do in life. So let’s find out what Ovee got up to, how he found the love of his life, and if he was able to mend the differences between him and his father.

Spoiler Alert

Why did Ovee swap identities with Nathi?

Owethu Junior, aka Ovee, was the son of famous billionaire Owethu Sityabi and, contrary to the perception people held of him, he was a very kind and affectionate young man. Yeah, he had a swanky lifestyle, but he wasn’t a spoiled brat. At the beginning of the film, we saw Ovee buying flowers from an elderly lady and then just going and giving them to random people to make their day a little better. That gesture gave us a glimpse of the kind of person he was. He often went to the shop of that old lady because he knew that, after her daughter’s demise, she was not doing well, and moreover, she worked hard to make a living. Owethu Senior wanted his son to take over his empire, but Ovee didn’t feel like doing so. Obviously, he was a bit laid back, but his reasons for not wanting to work at his father’s organization were very different. Ovee wanted to do something that he loved, and till that moment, he hadn’t been able to find anything that he liked. That said, the man was a bit oblivious to the struggles of the common man, majorly because he hadn’t lived that life, and everything had been served on a platter to him. But it was not his fault that he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and so blaming him for his privilege was not right in this case. Ovee shared a very close bond with his housemaid and her son, Nathi, and treated them as family. He treated Nathi as his friend and made sure that money didn’t get in the way of their friendship. Nathi always told Ovee that people talked to him and entertained him because they knew whose son he was. He said that if Ovee didn’t tell people his surname, their attitude towards him would change. Ovee didn’t believe that, and so during the opening ceremony of Sityabi Vineyards, he took a dare to approach a girl and try to woo her without revealing his identity. What started as a fun experiment ended up turning Ovee’s life upside down and led him to certain realizations too.

Ovee met this medical student named Amahle Philliso, and he was smitten the moment he laid eyes on her. Amahle was quite judgemental about people who came from a privileged background, primarily because her biological father, who happened to be a hotshot lawyer, had abandoned her mother even before she was born. Ovee told her that his name was Nathi, and that his mother worked as a house help at the Sityabi house. Amahle told him that her friend was getting married at the Sityabi Vineyard, and so Ovee seized the opportunity and told her that he was also starting his internship at the Sityabi Wineries. Ovee and Nathi both started interning at the winery, and they decided to swap identities there too and extend their social experiments to the workplace. Ovee was just adamant to prove to Nathi that he didn’t get special treatment because of his name and that he could prove his merit without it too. But obviously he was wrong, because in reality, people’s behavior did change once they got to know who he was.

What did Ovee do to win over Amahle?

Ovee went to Amahle’s friend’s wedding, and since he didn’t have inexpensive clothes, he swapped his coat with a waiter at the venue. Ovee was scared to tell the truth to Amahle, because he felt that she would never meet him again if she got to know that he was heir of the Sityabi empire. I believe that was the biggest mistake that Ovee made, and he should have told her about his identity. So he kept meeting Amahle as Nathi, and he kept lying to her. I believe Amahle decided to go out on a date with Ovee the day he brought the old florist to her hospital and got her admitted. The old lady didn’t respond to his call, and when he went to her shop, he found out that she needed medical attention. Amahle saw how Ovee cared for a woman like his own parents, and she realized that he had a heart of gold. Amahle’s Senior at the hospital, Dr. Mokoena, was also interested in her, and so he didn’t like the fact that Ovee was trying to woo her. In fact, he tried to insult Ovee on multiple occasions because his inflated ego couldn’t digest the fact that a nobody stole his girl from right under his nose. Similarly, Nathi too fell for his instructor, Lena, at the winery. Lena had an eccentric personality, and she made it pretty clear to Nathi (who she believed to be Ovee Junior) that he wouldn’t get any special treatment from her because he was the billionaire’s son. But Lena also developed feelings for Nathi, and in the end, they expressed their feelings to each other and started dating. Obviously, Ovee’s and Nathi’s secret was going to come out in the open, and they were delusional to believe that everything would go according to plan.

How Did Lena And Amahle Get To Know The Truth?

Ovee’s father organized a meeting with the board members, as he wanted Ovee to meet everybody. At the same time, Amahle had invited Ovee for a party. As if the situation was not chaotic enough, Lena got to know about the board meeting, and she told Nathi that she would accompany him, as, according to her, he was the billionaire’s son. Nathi organized a fake party where he asked the caretaker (Tmolus) of the villa where he and Ovee were staying to pretend to be his father. Ovee has decided that he would sit with his father for some time and then go to Amahle’s party. But obviously, things didn’t go as Ovee had planned. Dr. Mokoena spiked Ovee’s drink, and he ended up making a fool of himself. Ovee got drunk, and he almost told Amahle that he was the billionaire’s son. Owethu Senior was disappointed in his son, and he felt embarrassed when he made a scene in front of the other board members.

But Owethu Senior didn’t know what his son was up to. Ovee and Nathi got exposed during the last day of their internship, when Desmond (in charge of the internship program) had to choose the best-performing candidate. The real Ovee won the award, and that’s when everybody came to know that he and Nathi had swapped identities. Amahle also arrived at the ceremony, and she realized that Ovee had lied to her. Though Owethu Senior realized that his son had the potential to excel at his job, Amhale decided to not talk to Ovee because she felt hurt and deceived. Lena was also mad at Nathi for hiding the truth from her, but she forgave him. She loved Nathi irrespective of the background he came from, and she made that pretty clear to him.

Did Ovee and Amalhe end up together?

Ovee didn’t like the fact that his father never talked about his mother. He told him that he wanted to go back to their old house, where they all lived together. That’s when we got to know what had happened to Ovee’s mother. Owethu Senior told him that she’d suffered from cancer and he didn’t have enough money to get her treated. He told Ovee how helpful she was and how she always looked out for others. In that moment, Ovee decided what he wanted to do in life. He told his father that, just like his mother, he wanted to help others, since they were privileged enough to do that. Ovee started a social welfare wing, and he converted their old house into a charitable medical center. Ovee knew that one day Amahle would come to work there, and that would be when she got to know that he was not a bad man. Amahle wanted to do something for the community, and as Ovee had expected, she did come to work at the hospital. When she got to know that starting the hospital was Ovee’s idea, she couldn’t stop herself from going and meeting him. Amahle also loved the guy, and she knew that though he had lied to her, he was an extremely generous and kindhearted soul. Ovee and Amahle got back together while Lena and Nathi opened a food truck. The experiment of swapping identities did help Ovee’s cause, and in the end he didn’t only find the love of his life, he was also able to mend the differences between him and his father.
