JTBC’s Miss Night and Day already feels like it’s hit the home run, thanks to how familiar it feels. Yes, it is a new story with new characters; however, there’s this common theme amongst all small-town K-dramas: serial killers. I don’t exactly know what is so enthralling about a small town terrified by the idea of a mass murderer amongst them, but somehow, year after year, we keep getting the same story, packaged afresh. Having said that, I don’t mean to hate it at all; whatever the reason may be, we still get to see this plot twist in all different kinds of shows, and they generally add more to the story rather than taking away from it. When the Camellia Blooms is certainly one of my favorites of the lot. Anyway, with all that said, let’s jump straight into Mi-Jin and Im Soon’s story.
Spoiler Alert
What Happens At Mi-Jin’s Work?
In a flashback, we see that Mi-Jin met the magical cat once when she was a child. We then learn that the missing woman is Mi-Jin’s aunt. Back in the day, Mi-Jin’s parents tried to look for her aunt; however, you can’t report an adult missing, so it was a futile attempt. In the present day, Mi-Jin has to go to work for the first time. She tries to leave before daybreak, so her parents don’t notice what she looks like. Im Soon (old Mi-Jin) is put to work cleaning the office, and she’s honestly having a blast doing it. However, her dance party is stopped mid-way when Ji-Woong shows up out of the blue. It turns out that she’s dancing and cleaning his office, and she’s just learned that he’s actually a prosecutor. Since she’s younger than the rest of the oldies she works with, she’s a little slow to make friends.
In the meantime, Ji-Woong tries to find a place to live in Seohan, and the broker acts sketchy while offering him a place. Ji-Woong is in too much of a rush to find a place to live, so he doesn’t really care about the house as long as he can move in immediately. However, it turns out that the flat he’s given, which is also called “Motel Room 303” (maybe from the past?), is haunted, and everybody knows, except for poor Ji-Woong. Though he’s a little bit frightened at night by the strange things happening in the room, he proceeds to live there anyway. On the other hand, Mi-Jin has an influencer friend who she goes to see at night. She asks her to share a poster of the cat with her community so she’s able to find the little thing and figure out what miracle has come her way.
At work, we get a glimpse of all the old people working along with Soon. Immediately, a clash of egos breaks out between two of the men; however, she soon stops them before the supervisor notices, saving their jobs. They then decide to have a work dinner together the next day, where one of the men has to treat them all (you know how things work in the Korean economy). On the other hand, the idol Ko Won, who was prosecuted by Ji-Woong, arrives at the new office, and Ji-Woong shows up there at around the same time. Additionally, Ko Won is apparently going to enlist, and rumors say it’s because of how the trials turned out. As Ko Won makes his way into the building, Soon, who is cleaning the floors, notices a strange man in a cap. She’s quick to realize that the man is going to attack Ko Won, and using her mop, she tries to push him away. However, he has a bottle of acid in his hand, and it immediately flies out of his hand, looking like it’s going to spill all over her face before Ji-Woong saves her with his umbrella. Later, he soon overhears some women in the office excitedly talking about Ji-Woong and how he saved her (what about how brave she was? Tsk tsk). However, a woman tells them to raise their standards in men because the guy is too meticulous, and when he’s overworked, his OCD comes out.
What documents is Ji-Woong looking for?
Ji-Woong looks for Mi-Jin’s home to return her resume since their documents got exchanged in his car earlier. Her mom immediately calls her home in the excitement of seeing a man looking for her. She soon rushes out of work, worried about why the man is looking for her. Maybe she thinks he’s learned of her secret? She cycles home so fast that everyone on the street is shocked by the old woman on her bike. By the time she gets home, it’s nightfall (fortunately), and Mi-Jin meets with Ji-Woong. It turns out she almost burned his papers but then gave them away to a second-hand bookstore. They head off there together, much to the pleasure of Mi-Jin’s mother (she’s already dreaming about grandchildren). Mi-Jin takes a really long time to look for the papers; it’s enough time for Ji-Woog to find her endearing (shocking). One can already see the romance brewing. Unfortunately, by the time she finds the documents, Ji-Woong gets a call from a detective with some shocking news.
Why is Ji-Woong called?
It seems Ji-Woong’s mother passed away when he was young, and he returned home to a bloody body being taken away. In the present day, Ji-Woong is quick to decode the crime scene. A woman had been chased and brutally murdered, and Ji-Woong realized that the murderer was still present at the scene. Because the police showed up so soon after an old man called them, the killer hid in the sewer nearby. The man runs away when Ji-Woong notices him, finding his car and driving off. However, Ji-Woong doesn’t give up easily; he chases after the car on foot for a bit and then calls the police. He then gets a message from Mi-Jin saying she’s leaving the bookstore because she found the documents. Ji-Woong realizes that the man is driving down the same street that Mi-Jin is going to be in. He runs off to find her.
At the end of episode 2 of Miss Night and Day, Mi-Jin checks the documents in hand while walking home, wondering why Ji-Woong was so desperate to find them. She discovers that it is a detailed report of the serial missing persons from 20 years ago. However, I suppose, by the time she gets to her aunt’s name, Mi-Jin hears her name screamed out by Ji-Woong. When she turns around, it appears as if the car has hit her, and the papers fly out of her hand. But what I can imagine happened is that Ji-Woong ran to Mi-Jin and probably ended up catching her rather than the car hitting her, because in the preview, we see her alive and well (both her young and old selves).
