MobLand Theory: Is O’Hara The Rat? Or Is it Seraphina?

Published

For the past few weeks, the whole internet has been trying to figure out the identity of the rat in the Harrigan family, who has not only been leaking information to Conrad’s sworn enemy, Richie Stevenson, but also to the cops trying to break up the mob families in London. Even the investigating officer, DS Ivan Fisk, wasn’t sure who this mysterious person was, which was the reason why he apprehended Harry Da Souza after getting an anonymous tip about the murder of Conrad’s childhood friend, Archie Hammond. Well, a warning before moving forward as I’ll be discussing some massive spoilers from the show.

In the penultimate episode of MobLand season 1, the prodigal son, Eddie, finally revealed to his father/grandfather that it was his grandmother, Maeve, who’d tipped off the police to where Archie was buried and later told Richie about Brendan and Seraphina’s whereabouts when the duo were conducting some business in Antwerp. But hold on. Here, Conrad didn’t explicitly mention to the family that it was Maeve who called the police the morning after Archie’s murder, which could mean that it was someone else on the inside who was trying to frame Conrad for murder, but Fisk arrested Harry instead. It could also be possible that Conrad or Eddie just assumed that Maeve talked to the police because she had been leaking information to Richie. So, we don’t know if Maeve’s actually the rat in the family. However, Maeve did twist the situation to incriminate Harry because she wanted him out. She told Richie that Harry wasn’t happy with the Harrigans, and was going to leave them soon. I don’t know if that’s true, or if Maeve made it up, just like she did when she told Conrad that Archie was a rat. Yes, Maeve’s a lot like Lady Macbeth, playing her own game of thrones in the show. She first targeted Archie, then Harry, and later did the same thing with Seraphina, as she didn’t want her to have anything to do with the family business or even think about sitting on Conrad’s throne. So, even though Maeve had her own reasons for throwing Harry and Seraphina under the bus, we still don’t know who is the snitch who tipped off the police for sure.

Well, if we revisit the night of Archie’s murder, then except for the family members, Brendan, Kevin, Maeve, and Seraphina, the two outsiders present in the room were the family lawyer, O’Hara Delaney, and Conrad’s personal bodyguard, Paul. Later that night, Kevin called Harry to get rid of the body and wipe all the evidence clean from the house. I don’t personally think it’s Kevin, because the lad had been dealing with his own issues lately. Though Kevin does have his reasons to sideline Conrad, as he doesn’t agree with his father’s reckless decision-making. So with Kevin crossed out, the rat could be any one of the remaining lot, that is, Seraphina, Paul, Harry, or O’Hara.

After the penultimate episode, fans on the internet and some commenters on our video have suggested that the family lawyer could be the mole in the family. And I guess they came to such a conclusion mostly because, as soon as Harry made a sudden call to O’Hara and told her that the fentanyl deal with Jaime was moving forward, O’Hara echoed Archie’s words and told Harry that they were making a big mistake by stepping on Richie’s toes and taking over his business. At this moment, Harry didn’t respond, and after a long pause, he asked O’Hara to meet him at the Yard the next morning. The way O’Hara was trying to defend Richie’s business, it could imply that she could be secretly working for the Stevensons. Well, she was present in the house at the time of the murder, which means she could have called the police to frame Conrad and disrupt the family’s operations so Richie could take over the whole of London. But when that didn’t work, she snitched on the whereabouts of Archie’s corpse, hoping for a more positive response, but that plan didn’t work either. As soon as O’Hara bailed Harry out, he jokingly told her that he had stuck Archie’s body in a bag and drove him to Peter’s Parlor, where he placed the corpse in a coffin with some other lady who looked like Archie’s ex-wife. But you see, O’Hara doesn’t have any strong motive to be the grass (so far), nor does she hold enough power to deal lethal damage to the family, so her being the rat would be nothing less than a disappointment. And you and I would be calling it one of the worst pieces of writing if it really did turn out to be her.

More importantly, Harry wouldn’t kill anyone to protect O’Hara. Once again, she isn’t that important. In MobLand episode 8, when Harry met Freddie Shaw, one of Richie’s men who was working for Harry, Freddie told him that he knew who the rat was. It seemed like Freddie took the name of someone Harry couldn’t risk getting exposed, which was why, in the very next shot, we saw Freddie plummeting off the terrace parking lot and meeting his fateful end. I think Freddie took one of these names—Jan, Gina, Kevin, Bella or Seraphina—because these are the people Harry cares about and could have killed for. Some people in the comments suggested that Kevin’s wife, Bella, could be the leak, and that Harry killed Freddie to protect her. Well, I am not ruling out any theories as of now because, at this point, the mole could be anyone. With all that said, I don’t believe that Harry called O’Hara to the Yard to kill or expose her. Maybe he wanted her to meet him so they could catch the rat red-handed together, or to find a way to protect the mole from Conrad and Maeve so their identity wouldn’t have any adverse effect on the deal with Jaime.

But if you ask me, I personally think it’s either Seraphina or Harry who made the call to the police. They’ve both been constantly targeted by Maeve, while Conrad has been making all sorts of reckless decisions, killing people in cold-blood. So both Seraphina and Harry have clear motives to cross Conrad and Maeve. Seraphina, more likely, because she has been a victim of Maeve for a long time, and if you remember, Seraphina totally avoided talking about Archie’s murder when Brendan tried to bring up the topic. But I am not totally ruling out Harry, as Maeve’s the only reason why he’s not happy with the Harrigans and wants to leave, and I wouldn’t be all that surprised if Maeve gets killed in the most merciless way possible in the final episode. So, these are all the theories and arguments I’ve had swirling in my mind before the finale, but if you have anything to add or thoughts to share, please feel free to comment below.
