MobLand’s ending featured Kevin and Bella partaking in some trauma-bonding, Jan stabbing Harry in the chest, and Conrad supposedly celebrating the Harrigans’ victory over the Stevensons. Yeah, so, there was this talk about a rat in the Harrigan household all throughout the show, and the finale revealed that said rat was O’Hara, and she was working for Richie. Harry used O’Hara to wipe out Richie’s whole gang, and then he and Kevin proceeded to barge into Richie’s headquarters to kill him as well as O’Hara. Just like that, the “nuclear war” was over. Since Conrad and Maeve were still in jail, Kevin and Harry were in charge of things. But before giving shape to the future of the crime world in the UK, they decided to give themselves a break, go home, and chill out, I suppose. While Kevin and Bella began to reforge their relationship, which had been strained for a variety of reasons, Jan brought Harry to the brink of death. Why so? Well, allow me to dissect that and also discuss what we can expect from all the other characters in Season 2 of MobLand.
Spoiler Alert
Harry and Jan
The scene between Harry and Jan was a culmination of all the events that had transpired in the lives of the Da Souzas because of Harry’s association with the Harrigans. Yes, Jan had said multiple times that she didn’t want to know what Harry actually did for the Harrigans. But when it became impossible to maintain the veil between the life that Harry provided for Jan and Gina and the truth, there was bound to be an outburst. It was just a matter of coincidence that when Harry and Jan had that argument about everything that he had put his family through, they were in the kitchen and Jan happened to have a knife in her hand. Based on Jan’s reaction after realizing what she had done, I don’t think she intended to stab Harry; it just happened. Do I think Jan is some kind of deep undercover agent sent to kill Harry just when he has successfully killed Richie and is only pretending to be shocked by this turn of events? No. That said, given how the show conjured O’Hara’s betrayal out of thin air, the writers are undoubtedly capable of turning Jan into the big bad of the next season.
Until that actually happens, I am going to assume that the stabbing was simply an accident and it’ll act as a lifelong reminder for Harry to strike some kind of balance between work and family and for Jan to calm the hell down. Yes, I do think Harry will survive, because the character is being played by Tom Hardy, and everyone knows that he is the biggest draw of the show. So, killing him off this early will tank the ratings, even though this kind of death will be quite fitting for the character. Harry has been portrayed as the amalgamation of every super spy and super soldier in fiction. Hence, to have him die in this inconsequential way, instead of going out in some blaze of glory, will be quite bold. As for Jan, she seriously needs to decide what she wants. She can’t keep coasting off Harry and the Harrigans’ money and then complain about the means that are being used to procure that money. I hope she is not naive enough to ask Harry to leave this life of crime behind. She is free to leave; I am sure Harry will give her whatever she needs to start a new life with Gina. Well, if Gina decides to hang back and “fix” Eddie, then Jan will be free to start a new chapter of her life all on her own. If that seems like an uphill task, she needs to have a long conversation with Harry about the rules of their relationship. With all that said, the Da Souzas need to keep an eye out for Eddie, because he has been ordered by Maeve to kill Harry. Of course, the brat will find that to be next to impossible, and in that case, there’s a good chance that he’ll go after his family, starting with Gina.
Kevin and Bella
The most perplexing aspects of MobLand were the subplots surrounding Kevin and Bella. When Harry brought up the name Rusby in a conversation, Kevin made it his mission to hunt him down and kill him, because he’s the guy who had raped him when he was in juvie. Meanwhile, Bella kept going after her dad, Lord Pennock, with the intention of doing a sting operation on him and getting him arrested. The reasoning behind that was impossible to predict. Based on the fact that Bella was a part of Conrad’s harem, I assumed that Pennock had “sold” his own daughter to the gangster in exchange for some kind of political gain. But the truth was worse than that. Pennock used to rape Bella when she was just a child, and she’d probably been trying to get her revenge for a very long time. It was only when her need to punish Pennock aligned with Antoine’s intention of bringing down the British government that she got the chance to dent his reputation.
Seeing Kevin and Bella bond over the fact that they were both survivors of sexual abuse and that they had both spent a major chunk of their lives not talking about it was heartbreaking. But while Kevin’s abuser is dead, Bella’s abuser is still out there. He has been accused of corruption. Every government in the world is made of corrupt politicians. So, how long will it take for Pennock to quash the allegations leveled against him and take down every copy of that sting video? Maybe a few months. What’s going to happen after that? Well, given how Kevin and Bella have promised to support each other no matter what, I’m guessing that, in Season 2, we’ll see Bella use her family’s influence in the criminal world to teach Pennock a lesson once she realizes that the justice system has failed to do the same. Additionally, the ending of Season 1 had a lot of talk about “change.” So, after seeing the former power couple of London mess things up royally, I suppose Kevin and Bella will show how a power couple should truly act. The only person who can ruin it all for them is Eddie because, after learning that he is Conrad’s son, he has every reason to make life incredibly difficult for Kevin and Bella. Hopefully, Harry will be able to keep that brat at bay, at least until Conrad and Maeve are released from prison.
Conrad and Maeve
Conrad and Maeve didn’t really get to do anything in the finale. Conrad had to listen to Kevin “whinge and whine” about how he was going to dictate the law of the land, and all Conrad could do was watch. Maeve told Eddie the truth about his lineage and then ordered him to kill Harry and Seraphina. And then, after Richie died, Conrad and Maeve had this weird conversation about the latter seeing herself as Mother Nature and that she was testing how all the members of her family would fare when faced with a crunch situation. And although they might hate her at the moment, according to Maeve, they’ll eventually come crawling back to her. Later on, we saw Conrad walking through the prison, celebrating his family’s win in this “nuclear war,” while “Sympathy for the Devil” by the Rolling Stones played in the episode’s background, thereby indicating that even he thought of himself as a god.
In stark contrast to that, Kevin and Harry were mulling over how long they should take to present the recording of Alice, where she had admitted that she had framed Conrad and Maeve for killing Fisk and Mukasa, in court. They didn’t have a lawyer to do so because O’Hara was dead, but they were clearly in no hurry to hire a new one. In fact, they were perfectly okay with Conrad and Maeve rotting away in prison for a while so that they grew subservient enough to listen to Kevin and Harry once they were released. However, based on everything that we have seen, it doesn’t seem like Conrad and Maeve are capable of change. Maeve hates Harry and Seraphina from the bottom of her heart, and she’ll stop at nothing until both of them are dead. She’ll keep cooking up conspiracy theories until she gets at least one of them. As for Conrad, he’ll keep misjudging people until he dies. Yes, the show kept hinting at Harry’s betrayal, but that didn’t happen. Does that mean he’ll never stab Conrad in the back? Well, I think he is playing the long game. He knows that there’s no fun in deceiving the Harrigans since they’re currently at rock bottom. Like he told Eddie, he’ll build them up and then throw them over the ledge once they’re at the top. Seraphina’s betrayal, though, will come sooner; at least that’s what I felt after her conversation with Kat.
Kat and Seraphina
I think, somewhere deep down, Kat knew that Harry wasn’t going to actually betray the Harrigans, become her fixer, and help her take over London. That was why she had that conversation with Seraphina, prior to Richie’s death, so that she at least had one of the Harrigans in her pocket at the end of this whole ordeal. I don’t really know what Kat meant when she said that Harry’s decision to not side with her will cost him dearly. I don’t know if she’s all talk and no show. I don’t know what her background is, if she’s ex-CIA or a part of the mafia, and how much power she truly wields in the world of crime. And, going by her accent, since she is clearly not from London, it’s possible that she will be out of her depth if she decides to go toe-to-toe with Harry, who was born and brought up in the UK. What I do know is that there’s a distinct possibility that Seraphina is the one who’ll side with Kat in order to hurt the family that has never considered her one of their own. At the end of the episode, we saw her placing a statue of a Greek mythological figure on Conrad’s desk while sitting on his chair, thereby indicating her thirst for power. I couldn’t make out whose statue that was, but I am willing to bet that it’s Achilles. She is Conrad’s Achilles heel because, after Maeve, she is the person that he loves the most.
So, maybe she is going to use Conrad’s weakness to take him and his wife out for good because Maeve tried to have her killed in Antwerp and Conrad didn’t punish her for doing so. But then it’s possible that Seraphina will end up being Harry’s Achilles heel because we’ve seen them gel pretty well. No, I don’t think she’ll kill Harry because she doesn’t hate him at all. However, after seeing him and Kevin sit on the proverbial throne of London, she’ll likely partner up with Kat to be the queen that she is meant to be. Or, Seraphina might just pretend to go against the Harrigans to win Kat’s trust and then betray her when she is about to make her move on her family. Because, to be honest, backstabbing the Harrigans will prove Maeve right, and that’s probably something that Seraphina doesn’t want. I mean, the last thing that she wants to hear is Maeve telling Conrad, “I told you so.” If she protects the Harrigans from Kat’s wrath, Maeve will have no option but to silently observe the illegitimate child of Conrad take the crown that she has yearned for for a long time. With all that said, she has to look out for Eddie, because that brat has been programmed by Maeve to kill her and Harry. Eddie doesn’t have the ability to touch Harry. Hence, to do right by his “queen,” maybe he’ll go after Seraphina. If Eddie does that, he’ll vex Conrad, and I don’t know if he can afford to deal with his actual dad.
Tattersall
Tattersall was seen looking at Richie’s body with a sad expression on his face. I don’t know if he is unhappy that his old friend is dead or that his plans of collaborating with Richie to earn some black money have gone up in flames. Either way, what is he going to do next? If he truly liked Richie, he is going to avenge him by keeping Conrad and Maeve in prison longer than they need to be. The Harrigans don’t have a lawyer yet who can use that recording of Alice which proves that Conrad and Maeve are not guilty of killing Fisk and Mukasa. So, Tattersall can use this opportunity to drag Conrad and Maeve through hell. Or maybe he’s going to dig up some real dirt on those two old-timers and prove to the courts that, even though the recording proves that the Harrigan couple is innocent of that one crime, they are responsible for several others. If Tattersall goes after Eddie and makes him squeal, he’ll probably reveal that Maeve is the one who ordered him to kill Tommy. If he goes after Paul and pushes the right buttons, he’ll probably spill the tea on Conrad asking him to put a bomb in Vron’s car.
I know that Harry is thorough when it comes to cleaning up a crime scene, but I didn’t see him do any of that after killing Richie. So, if Tattersall gets his hands on CCTV footage of his daylight murder, he is not only going to send Harry and Kevin to prison, but he is also going to pin the killing on Conrad and Maeve because of Harry and Kevin’s association with them. Do I think Tattersall is going to do the exact opposite and try to offer Conrad and Maeve immunity in exchange for information or money? Well, yeah, he can do that. It’s not like any of the Stevensons are around to judge him. Tattersall is a freelancer. He is free to do whatever the hell he wants to do as long as nobody proves that he is a dirty cop who had two people, potentially three because I’m not sure if Alice is dead or alive, killed for his own benefit. That somebody might just be Harry, because he is a mixture of James Bond, Ethan Hunt, and Jason Bourne, and he has the ability to pull strings that we don’t even know exist in order to defeat his enemies.
Jaime
Jaime wasn’t present in the finale, not even for a second, but I think he’ll be a key player in Season 2 of MobLand. While talking about what plans the showrunners have, Tom Hardy said that they intend to “go international” in terms of business and crime. The show was largely limited to the UK. It briefly visited Belgium and the Netherlands, but after that the focus returned to London and the Cotswolds. But since the Harrigans intend to expand their business by buying and selling fentanyl, maybe Kevin and Harry will need to travel to Mexico in order to cement their deal. Of course, it won’t be a straightforward round-trip. They’ll face hurdles along the way, possibly from Jaime’s enemies over there, who’ll try to either kill Kevin and Harry or win them over.
I’m not really sure what the nature of Jaime and Kat’s relationship is. He did say that owing a favor to Kat is not the same as owing a favor to Harry. So, I think it’s safe to assume that they are on good terms. Given how Harry has defied Kat, it’s quite possible that Kat will order Jaime to capture or kill him. It remains to be seen what Jaime will do in that situation. Can he afford to go against Kat and risk her wrath? Or will he count on getting protection from Harry by doing business with the Harrigans? I don’t know. What I do know is that Jaime will certainly be happy to know that Conrad has been jailed. Who knows? Maybe he’ll extend his list of demands and ask Harry and Kevin to let Conrad rot in jail if they really want to do business with him. Maybe he’ll pay the inmates in the prison that Conrad is in to torture him so the racist old man gets the message that he isn’t as invincible as he thinks he is.
Eddie
In this article, I have mentioned Eddie multiple times, and how he has been tasked by Maeve to kill Harry and Seraphina. But where the hell did he go after the attack on the safe house? He went to the prison to meet Maeve. He came back to the safe house. He tried to kill Bella. He got manhandled by Kiko, and then Zosia punched him in the gut. Soon after that, Richie’s men attacked the safe house. Kiko and Zosia stayed back to handle them, while the rest ran into the woods to seek refuge, and Eddie was not there. When Jan, Gina, Seraphina, and Bella returned to the Cotswolds, Eddie was still not with them. So, what happened? I have 3 guesses. The 1st one is that maybe this is a continuity error. Maybe the people who were in charge of shooting the finale forgot to bring in Anson Boon for those scenes and then just hoped that nobody would notice amidst all the chaos. It was impossible to use CGI and VFX to add him into those frames without making it look jarring. Hence, the showrunners assumed that the audience would fill in the gaps on their own. My 2nd guess is that Eddie left the safe house right after he got punched and before the attack began. There’s only one road out of there and if he took a car, he would’ve come face-to-face with Richie’s men. Since that didn’t happen, maybe he lost track of where the ladies were going, went off in another direction, and is currently lost in the woods. During that process, maybe he was kidnapped by one of Richie’s men and he will hold him ransom until the Harrigans give him what he wants.
My 3rd guess is that the ladies killed Eddie and made it look like he died during the attack on the safe house. Bella loved Eddie, but maybe she didn’t feel that way right after he tried to kill her. Gina was in love with Eddie, but she had just learnt that he was incapable of change, and it’s possible that she predicted that he was about to become crazier after learning that Conrad was his father. Jan hated him, and so did Seraphina and Zosia. So, what’s stopping them from claiming that the heir to the Harrigan throne is dead? That’d explain why none of them addressed his absence after returning to the Cotswolds, and Seraphina just went and sat on Conrad’s chair, as if she was indicating that the prince is no more.
Anyway, those are just my predictions for the highly anticipated second season of MobLand. I think that Season 1 had a pretty solid start, but after episode 7, it kind of lost its way, thereby leading to a lackluster finale. I hope that the writers don’t repeat the mistakes they made in Season 1 in Season 2.
