With Richie Stevenson already in the ground, the second season of MobLand will need a new antagonist, and who better than the American woman, Kat McAllister, to take up that mantle? I mean, why else would the showrunners build so much mystery around her character and bring her personally from America to London? So yes, Kat will have a larger role to play in the next season, and based on her brief interaction with Seraphina and Harry, I think we can surmise what’s really cooking in her head.
Spoiler Alert
Kat Becomes The New Antagonist
Just like DS Fisk, Richie, O’Hara, and numerous others, Kat became the latest person to tell Harry that the Harrigans are a lost cause, which was why she asked him to take them all out and take the throne for himself, as nobody knew the mob business better than him. To Kat’s surprise, Harry rejected the idea without giving it much thought as he was more loyal to Kevin and the Harrigans, and would not betray them for something as trivial as money or power. However, such a rejection comes at a cost. Kat made it quite clear that if he wasn’t working for her, then he was working against her, and that made Harry, and the Harrigans Kat’s direct enemies. She told Harry that “the ship was going down” and “the plane was going down” which was Kat’s failed attempt to explain that the days of the Harrigans were numbered. And no matter what happens next, she was going to take down the Harrigans, indicating that their end was inevitable. However, Kat liked Harry and his methods, and therefore wanted him to take the parachute and save himself and his family. Irony has it, Harry didn’t quite understand the metaphor. He wasn’t quite sure if it was the “ship” or the “plane” that was going down, because he couldn’t be on both at the same time. In a subtle way, Harry did tell Kat that he wasn’t the kind of man to have his feet on two boats, which Kat took as a declaration of war. In a way, Kat was offering Harry the same deal Richie had offered to the lawyer. And what Kat failed to understand here was that Harry couldn’t be punishing people for a crime and then commit the same mistake himself. Therefore, he not only rejected Kat’s offer but also set an example that no matter which side you are on or how weak your cavalry is, you cannot switch sides on the battlefield as per your convenience because in the end, it’s loyalty that wins wars, not power. I think from their brief but heated conversation it was quite obvious that Kat would be coming after Harry and the Harrigans in MobLand season 2, but how is she going to do that?
Seraphina Will Join Hands With Kat
In the season 1 finale of MobLand, Kat made a short call to Conrad’s illegitimate daughter, and Kevin’s half-sister, Seraphina, complimenting her for having the courage to look her brother’s killer in the eye. Well, Kat’s words suggested that Seraphina was the perfect choice to become her pawn, who, in the larger scheme of things, would eventually cause the downfall of the Harrigans. Seraphina is as ambitious as the rest of Conrad’s kids, but she isn’t delusional like the rest of them. She knows that Conrad will never consider her an heir to his legacy, at least not as long as Maeve is in the game. So her only way to rise up the ladder and make her way to the throne is to kill the rest of the heirs, making her the only surviving successor. And obviously, to realize her dreams, she needs someone powerful by her side, and she couldn’t find a better partner than Kat McAllister, a woman who wants to rule in a man’s world, just like Seraphina. I guess Seraphina has already made up her mind to form a secret alliance with Kat to overthrow the old gods.
You see, Maeve had been saying from the very beginning that Seraphina was going to betray the family. But it isn’t like Maeve, “ Mother Nature,” could see the future or anything like that. It’s actually part of what Maeve does. She pushes people to the brink of madness, and then when they finally flip, she just comes up with a look, “I told you so.” I believe Seraphina may not have considered going against the family if Maeve hadn’t treated her like trash, making her realize at regular intervals that she was nothing but an illegitimate child, who deserved neither love nor titles. Seraphina even knows that it was Maeve who tried to have her killed in Antwerp, and she wouldn’t be surprised if Maeve tried to do that again. So, it wasn’t just Seraphina’s ambition, but also her fear that drove her to become the next rat in the family. In MobLand season 2, it is likely that Kat will enlist Seraphina’s help to break down the family. In season 1’s ending, as soon as Seraphina returned to the Harrigans’ house, she went straight to Conrad’s office, the study room, and sat in his chair, further revealing her desire to sit on the throne. She even put a miniature Greek figure, a depiction of the God of War, Ares, on the desk, suggesting that she has finally decided to wage a war against the gods. Or perhaps it was a figure of either Achilles or Hercules, the two famous demigods, who were born out of wedlock, just like Seraphina.
And I hope I am not reaching too far here, but Seraphina’s name constantly reminds me of Seraphim, a central character from Netflix’s Blood of Zeus. That said, Seraphina’s arc looks more similar to the show’s protagonist, Heron, the son of Zeus, born to a human queen, Electra. She was already married to King Periander when Zeus laid his eyes upon her and got her pregnant with his child. When Zeus’s queen, Hera, found out about his illicit affair, she tried to harm Electra, which was why Zeus hid Electra and her son in a place where Hera couldn’t find them. And even though Heron never really desired his father’s throne, through his courage, he eventually became the new ruler of Mount Olympus. I think I don’t need to water it down for you, because in MobLand, Conrad is Zeus, Maeve is Hera, and their empire is the dying legacy of the gods.
So, with all that said, I believe the second season of MobLand will be about new alliances, new betrayals, and more importantly, family. I think with Kat McAllister jumping into the fray, the fight is going to go international. Though one of the things that still remains a mystery is: why does Kat want to get rid of the organized crime family in London? You can say it’s for money or power, something she offered to Harry. Or maybe, as the entire fanbase of the show has speculated, could it be that she has an ulterior motive and is working for the CIA? Well, we will find out. As far as Harry, Conrad, Kevin, and the others on their side are concerned, I think the next time around, they won’t just be dealing with mobsters from London, but from all over the world. It will be a whole new ball game with international organized crime families and intelligence agencies entering the picture. The Harrigans have already finalized their fentanyl deal with Jaime, which means Harry will be traveling across the border to check on the new trade personally, for which he will be meeting with new friends and foes overseas. And I can only imagine what role Kat is going to play in this, as she and her new partner, Seraphina, aren’t going to miss the chance to take out their enemies and break the family apart.
