‘Monsieur Spade’ Season 2 Theories: What Will Be Gazala’s Next Move?

Monsieur Spade season 1 made us privy to the unresolved issues that put a blot on the political landscape of France and how the retired detective found himself amidst a crisis. There hasn’t been any official announcement for season 2 as of now, but let’s try to figure out if there can be one and where the lives of the different characters would lead them.

Spoiler Alert

What will be Gazala’s next move?

In Monsieur Spade season 1, we saw that Gazala was working with Phillipe, and it seemed like both of them had feelings for each other. But in the last episode, it became apparent that she was having a secret affair with George, and neither Cynthia nor Phillipe had any clue about it. From what Laurent Suchet told Virginia at the end of episode 6, we got to know that Phillipe was actually attracted to Gazala, which was why he found himself stuck in the situation. Gazala was the only person, for the longest time, who knew how Zayd looked, which was why Phillipe didn’t even think of harming her. He knew that whoever he sold the kid to would want to verify if he was the Mahdi. Gazala worked for the National Liberation Front, and she was one of the high-ranking officers. She had been involved in various acts of terror on French soil, but she knew that having Zayd in her custody would give her unparalleled leverage, something that her group had been trying to achieve for a very long time. FLN had tasted victory when Algeria was declared to be an independent nation, but there were still a lot of organizations and groups out there who wanted to snatch their freedom and make Algeria a part of France once again. Gazala knew that they were walking on a tightrope, and they needed to be a step ahead of their opponents at all times.

At the end of season 1, we saw that Gazala escaped, and nobody heard from her after that. If there is a second season, Gazala is going to play an important role in the scheme of things. Neither the FLN nor the OAS had any intention of stopping the war, but now Gazala would have to find a different way to go about her business since her cover was blown, and she could no longer stay hidden, at least in Bozouls. The British agencies might want to find her since one of their own had conspired with her, and it could be possible that she had some secret intelligence that could make her a potential threat. Phillipe, too, might try to reconnect with her once he is free from the clutches of law because there were a lot of things that were unresolved from his end.

What will happen between Teresa and Spade?

It was Marguerite who told Spade that it could be possible that Teresa was his daughter, and though the man had denied any such thing deep down, he also knew that it could be true. In the last episode of Monsieur Spade, we find out that Marguerite is right, and Teresa is actually 17 years old. That meant that her mother had hidden the fact from Spade on purpose, as she probably didn’t want him to get burdened with the responsibility or feel anything else for her than he actually did. I believe that we will see Spade’s and Teresa’s relationship strengthen in season 2. As of now, I don’t think that Spade would reveal to her that she was his daughter, but he would definitely stop pushing her away from himself. Teresa hated the fact that she was kept in a convent, as she always wanted to stay with Spade. She had no feelings whatsoever for Phillipe, whom I believed to be her father for the longest time. I believe Teresa would be in a much better space of mind, and she would definitely get rid of the ghost of her past life.

Will Teresa end up with Henri?

Henri loved Teresa, and it was quite evident in the way he looked out for her. Henri kept an eye on Monsieur Spade’s movement, and he was always in and around the house, primarily because he was given the orders to do so and also because of his affection for the girl. In the last episode of Monsieur Spade, Teresa confronted Henri, and she told him that she had found out that he was working for the OAS. Henri accepted the fact that he was one of those people who believed that Algeria was a part of France, and he was willing to fight for the cause. Henri’s ideologies caused a rift between him and Teresa, as the latter didn’t want to be with such an extremist. Teresa craved a normal life, and though she loved Henri, she knew that she wouldn’t be happy with him in the long term, as what they sought in a partner and in a relationship was very different.

In Monsieur Spade season 2, Teresa and Henri might cross each other’s paths and rekindle the flame, but I don’t think that Teresa is going to commit to anything unless and until she is sure about Henri. Teresa had seen death; she had witnessed violence; she had experienced things that still give her nightmares; and so, she didn’t want to be with a man who had such far-right ideologies and was not ready to compromise on his principles.

What will happen with Zayd?

Though Virginia Dell took Zayd with him at the end of Monsieur Spade season 1, I don’t believe that it would stop other nations from trying to get the custody of the boy. Cynthia threatened Virginia in her face, and she told her that it was not the end of the road for her. No matter how much Virgina told others about her noble plans, there was some hidden agenda that she was not revealing. Spade saw through her intentions, and he knew what game she was playing. Virginia knew all about Spade and all the others present there. I don’t think that Zayd would be left alone, as someone would want to take advantage of his skills. Maybe in season 2, we will see Zayd actually working for some intelligence agencies, and that’s when we will get to know how impactful his skills are and how much leverage the concerned party will have. One thing is for sure: that boy won’t be able to live his life in peace, and he will be troubled by the greed of men who will use him for their own advantage.
