Episode 2 of season 2 of Murder In A Small Town is all about family feuds and nuptials, but does it end on a happy note? Additionally, while murder seems to be a common thing down in Gibsons, having your second daughter meet your librarian girlfriend is not. The one thing that’s kind of irritating me already, though the season just started, is that everything is ending in the same way, i.e., with Cassandra and Karl realizing their lives together are way too complicated, but they will find a way to work it out anyway. This episode was definitely one of the more exciting ones in the show, but I’m still stuck here, wondering why there are so many murders in a town where people like Cassandra are desperate to become an artistic hub. Very interesting, eh? Anyway, with that said, let’s jump straight into episode 2 of season 2.
Spoiler Alert
Who Killed Griff Connolly?
Episode 2 of Murder In A Small Town begins with behind-the-scenes of an exciting wedding set in Gibsons. The two parties involved, though, are a completely unexpected pairing because they’ve been feuding for 3 generations now. Just as things are looking happy and excited, a body hits the ground, and it’s the father of the bride. But who killed him and why? The suspects in this episode are very obvious, but surprisingly, unlike the rest of the show so far, the final perpetrator was a complete surprise. In this episode, we’re introduced to the Taits and the Connollys, two powerful families who have to share the same room because Jocelyn Tait’s son and Griff Connolly’s daughter have fallen in love. Already, this seems very problematic because the wedding is set for the anniversary of Jocelyn’s husband’s death (yikes), and she blames Griff for it. However, I don’t think he actually killed the man physically.
Sylvia is the bride who finds herself by herself on the night of the rehearsal dinner. Not only is her husband-to-be missing, but her father too. She’s already worried, but to make things worse, her younger brother makes a scene after drinking too much alcohol and insults the Taits. To make matters worse, he even punches the best man in the face, which leads to no more dinner and the police being involved. Obviously, the first suspect is Jocelyn herself, considering how much she hates Griff, but one thing is certain: she was excited for this wedding and genuinely wanted it to happen, despite her hatred for Sylvia’s father.
Also, it’s interesting that the man had to die on the day before Jocelyn’s husband died, which makes it seem very much like a revenge plot, but it’s not. While Jocelyn was at the dinner, her son was the one who was missing from the scene for too long. He showed up way too late, after all the drama had taken place. This means he and Griff were the only two people missing at the event. But he claims he was out buying drugs at a shady downtown bar and then got distracted by the whole situation because he was stressed and didn’t want Sylvia to find out. The whole thing was a secret from her because she didn’t want him to do drugs. However, Jocelyn convinces Sylvia that “he just made a mistake,” and this is not something to break off the wedding for. I’m honestly not so sure about that, ma’am, but I guess she just wants her son to be happy.
But amidst all the chaos, Karl’s got a good team of researchers, and, together, they realize that the resort where the wedding was taking place, the Rockwater, belonged to Griff as of the week before the wedding. So it turns out, Leland, the owner of the resort, didn’t want him to tear it down and ruin his family’s life like he did with the Taits. It honestly doesn’t make sense that a man in a wheelchair could have that much strength to choke a man who is 6 ft tall to death, but I suppose it can happen in Gibsons. It was his wife who then got rid of the body for him, so ultimately, he was the one who ended up ruining their lives anyway. To make matters worse, after all of that, Sylvia’s brother nearly slits Jocelyn’s throat because he thinks she killed his father, but despite that, she wants Sylvia to marry her son. She wants this feud to end once and for all because it’s ruined too many lives. She somehow believes this one wedding can miraculously bring them together, but is she really going to forgive Sylvia’s brother? I guess he’s just young.
What Happens With Steph?
In episode 2, Steph, Holly’s sister, comes to visit them, and just like Holly’s reaction to Cassandra, Steph isn’t very happy to see her dad moving on either. She claims she was expecting someone much more frumpy, but Cassandra’s unbothered by it. Holly came through, so Steph will too. Steph doesn’t like that Cassandra’s around so much, but then Holly brings her to the town council meeting, where the mayor decides to put Cassandra on the spot. However, she does a fantastic job of showing the people that she genuinely cares about the town and has always done so. There’s also something about her mother, but I’m not sure what kind of secret the mayor is harboring to use against Cassandra sometime soon. Holly and Steph watch Cassandra take down the mayor with her feisty spirit and public speaking skills. It seems Steph’s impressed enough to stay back longer, and they’ve also bonded over how frumpy librarians are supposed to look.
At the end of episode 2 of Murder In A Small Town, Steph is the one who reminds Karl that they can be a little bit absent for the ones they love and that he needs to apologize to Cassandra for not being at the council meeting. While Cassandra seems to be understanding of Karl’s police work, how long will she manage to truly feel okay with it? Well, the answer lies in the two girls who made it instead of him. It seems the couple is committed, and whatever obstacle comes their way, they’ll handle it. On the other hand, it looks like Sam is struggling a little bit with her 15-year-old daughter, who is looking too similar to how his alcoholic sister did. He’s stressed out, but he still seems to be doing his best as a dad and officer. At the same time, newcomer Leila is exactly what the team needed, but they need at least another 4, and that means working in tandem with the mayor. Will it work out for Karl? We’ll have to wait and watch.
