‘Medusa’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Is Gabriel Dead?

Published

The Colombian Netflix original Medusa tells the story of Barbara Hidalgo, the newly appointed CEO of the Colombian conglomerate, Medusa. Soon after becoming CEO, Barbara is nearly killed when her yacht explodes at sea. She’s saved by a native healer who sends her back to her family so she can uncover the mystery of who tried to kill her. Soon enough, Barbara realizes she’s made enemies everywhere, and with the help of Detective Danger and a close officer worker, Gabriel, she has to discover all her and her family’s dirty little secrets. The 12-episode series is quite predictable, and in Medusa’s ending, it becomes obvious who attempted to kill Barbara and why—an unimpressive story if you ask me. In the final episode, Barbara is deceived into believing that Tatiana, her husband’s mistress, wanted to have her killed and hired a man to do so, but this is far from the truth, and nothing can be confirmed because Tatiana’s already dead. So will she be able to figure out who tried to kill her? Or will she be lost at sea again? Let’s find out in the ending of Medusa.

Spoiler Alert

How Does The Family Turn Against Damian?

During Medusa’s finale, Barbara realizes that her mum didn’t abandon them for a random man, but her father, Damian, forced her to stay away from the kids and institutionalised her. Now, Barbara brings her younger brother, Christian, to come see her mother, and they’re back to being a happy family with not too many problems. It seems Damian was coercing Medusa employees to do sexual favours for him, and all Barbara’s mom wanted was to expose him and save those women. On the other hand, Barbara also learns that her uncle, Camilo, is a pedophile and got with Diego, the man who agrees to expose him, at 14. Barbara uses this information to turn her cousin against her uncle, and she exposes her own father to the whole family, which eventually leads to them turning against him and him being thrown out of the company. On the other hand, Barbara, who has now decided she’s going to be a good person, agrees to give her young brother the presidency of the company while she continues to work on the back end of things.

Who Tried To Kill Barbara And Why?

Turns out the one guy who made everything else possible is responsible for trying to kill Barbara. It becomes quite obvious when Gabriel tells Barbara that an ex-lover of his has come back, and he’s referring to her. Despite remembering most of the stuff she had to to solve the mystery, Barbara never remembered who Gabriel was and the fact that he gave her a love confession after working with her secretly for months on end. It’s a typical incel story of a subordinate man falling in love with an ambitious, strong, independent woman with an existing family. Gabriel then planned the whole thing when he realized Barbara would never be his, but when she came back alive, he thought it meant a second chance for the two of them. So he worked his way back into her life, trying to support her in every way possible, but this time it was Danger who came in his way, getting Barbara to fall in love with him (now that’s also a love story I could not get behind, but okay). But I’m a little bit confused about who the people were that cut Barbara’s finger off when she was in the water. This was not Gabriel’s doing, and it’s possible it was just some people robbing her, but that could’ve been an interesting thing to explore later on in the show. I suppose nobody cared about the stolen ring because it was an unfortunate robbery and I guess it helps make the story juicier because her finger is first found at sea, making it seem like she had died.

Does Danger Get His Closure?

The other massive conflict in the show is that Danger lost his partner, Saul, because he was a dirty cop, and his friend and colleague got caught in the crossfire. Danger always believed himself responsible for Saul’s death, so he had to kill Ciclope, the man from the cartel who killed his friend Saul. In the final episode, there’s a stakeout, and Danger batters the man until he can’t move, but Ciclope pulls his gun out at Danger and his friend. Fortunately, the other guy pulls out his gun and shoots Ciclope dead, giving Danger the closure he needed.

Does Gabriel Kill Himself?

Since Medusa is all about spiritual healing, I suppose we could categorize Gabriel’s death as an act of karma. The man killed Tatiana and staged it as a suicide to put all the blame on her and then ended up dying by suicide? Doesn’t really make sense, does it? Gabriel also made enemies of the Hidalgo family when he decided to work with Barbara. This is why it could be anybody in the family who might’ve attempted to kill him. Damian is the first bet, because not only has he been removed from his own company, but his ex-wife has been brought back into the fold. On the other hand, his other daughter, Viv, doesn’t really care about the family or the business anymore, especially since her mother basically forced her into caring, so she leaves, and Damian tells his wife to leave too. Funny, because Ursula could’ve been the only one to help him get back the company. Jacob’s angry because his father’s been exposed, and that’s led to his mum being paralyzed from the societal hate. So, it could honestly be any of these guys. But it could also be Barbara herself? At the same time, Medusa introduces a new line of mushrooms to connect people with their spirituality, which is led by the guidance of Eluney, Barbara’s ex-lover and friend. Finally, Barbara will give back to the community, just as she promised, and the mangroves are also protected.

In Medusa’s ending, Gabriel is found dead in his cell after having gone crazy for a month. Before apparently killing himself, he leaves a message to decode, which translates to “if they kill me here, it’ll be the demon Hidalgo,” leaving room for another season to figure out who this demon is. I suppose we’ll have to wait for another season to watch the duo Barbara and Danger get to work. But in the meantime, if you have theories around who really killed Gabriel then do let me in the comments below.
