‘Nine Bodies In A Mexican Morgue’ Episode 5 Recap & Ending Explained: Are Sonja And Zack Dead?

Published

In the 4th episode of Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue, we learned that Zack was actually a DEA agent, and he was married to Claire, who was also a DEA agent, and they had a daughter named Lucy. But after Lisa’s death, since Zack was framed as the killer, Sonja, Kevin, Dan, and Amy turned against him and tied him to a tree. While Sonja, Dan, and Amy trekked up the hill to reconnect the ELT to the antenna, Kevin was tasked with getting the code to the satellite phone out of Zack, since they believed he was the one who was looking after the drugs in the crashed plane. Kevin didn’t get any secret code, because Zack was apparently not the killer, and he wasn’t communicating with Aero Alux’s MD, Cora, regarding the contraband. That said, Sonja successfully got the ELT to start emitting a signal again. When Claire was informed about this fact, she planned to head over to Mexico and save her husband, even though the DEA wasn’t on good terms with the country. Did she get to Zack on time? Was Claire the killer? Let’s talk about the 5th episode of Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue to find out.

Spoiler Alert

Dan and Amy Are Dead

Episode 5 of Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue opens with Zack, still tied to a tree, thinking about the last conversation he had with Claire about his trip to Guatemala. When he wakes up, he finds Sonja standing over him with a shard of glass in her hand. She is not there to kill him; she is there to ascertain if he really is what he claims to be. Once Sonja is sure that Zack is not a threat to her, she cuts the rope and sets him free. But she tells him that he shouldn’t even think about rejoining the group of survivors because this time they are not going to capture him; they’ll kill him. We get some brief scenes of Claire leaving for Mexico from Houston to get to her husband, while Vega and Lopez are ordered by their superiors to send a chopper to El Cielo and search the place for survivors of the plane crash. Claire is stopped in her tracks in Monterrey City by Chief Inspector Revueltas because the DEA’s ties with the Mexican government are less than peachy. Meanwhile, Lopez tasks Guzman and Sanchez with heading over to the spot, along with three other men, and tells them to return to Los Trios only after they’ve found the survivors, or whatever is left of them.

The focus then shifts back to the survivors, who are having an argument about how Zack has managed to escape. Sonja says that they should forget about Zack and focus on staying alive until help arrives. Since mistrust amongst the group is at an all-time high, Dan (who has Lisa’s hunting rifle in his possession) decides that he and Amy are going to stick together and stay away from both Kevin and Sonja. Once Dan and Amy are out of earshot, Kevin correctly accuses Sonja of freeing Zack. As soon as she admits that she has indeed done what she is being charged with, Kevin leaves the crash site, probably with the intention of reaching the ELT and flagging down the rescue chopper if and when it arrives. Now, although Zack, Kevin, and Sonja are in different parts of the forest, they somehow gravitate towards that barracuda-infested pond and find out that Dan and Amy have either been shot or stabbed to death. Before taking his last breath, Dan confesses to Amy that he did approach her with the intention of swindling her, but eventually he fell in love with her and started thinking about becoming a better person for her sake. Well, none of that matters now because Amy is dead and so is Dan, and that gun that he was holding on to didn’t help him protect the love of his life in any way. Dan and Amy’s deaths lead to a full-blown Mexican standoff (yes, it’s very on the nose) between Kevin, Zack, and Sonja because all of them think that one of the others is the killer. Well, it’s not exactly a Mexican standoff because Zack is unarmed, while Kevin has Lisa’s gun and Sonja has Zack’s gun; but I’ll let you be the judge of that.

Kevin Is Dead

After a lot of to-and-fro about who has the upper hand in this whole situation, Sonja convinces Kevin that, since Lisa’s rifle has only one bullet, he’s on the back foot. If Kevin kills Zack, then Sonja is going to unload all the bullets in her gun into Kevin. If Kevin kills Sonja, Zack is going to kill Kevin for torturing him for no reason. That said, it’s only after the trio realizes that all their bickering has robbed them of the opportunity to flag down the rescue helicopter that they decide to put an end to their feud. Kevin empties Lisa’s rifle and then throws it into the barracuda-infested pond. Zack and Sonja plan to go to the ELT and set up a smoke signal there so that they can catch the attention of the chopper, especially since Guzman and Sanchez are already having a hard time seeing anything due to the cloud cover. Kevin refuses to go anywhere with Zack and Sonja, and he decides to stay at the crash site and wait there until the chopper actually arrives. Zack and Sonja don’t protest Kevin’s stance and begin trekking up the hill to reach the spot where the ELT has been placed.

While resting up, Sonja apologizes for everything that Zack has been through because of her. Zack says that Kevin is the killer and he has been manipulating everyone all this while, and he should pay for his sins. As Sonja begins to warm up to Zack again, he reveals that he is a married man, and everything that he has said about himself so far, especially the part about him being an insurance agent, has been a lie and part of his cover as a DEA agent. Sonja is miffed, but Zack brings her back onto the topic of Kevin being or possibly being the killer who is peddling drugs from Guatemala to Houston. However, their conversation is interrupted by a loud gunshot. So, they ditch their trek and go back to the crash site only to find what seems to be Kevin’s lifeless body lying on the ground while his face is submerged in the barracuda-infested pond. When Zack pulls out the body, they see that the barracudas have eaten Kevin’s face, thereby kind of revealing the identity of the faceless dead body in the morgue in Los Trios in the present day. Sonja finally accepts the fact that, in addition to the passengers, the stewardess, and the pilot, there was someone else on the plane who was protecting the drugs by killing off everyone. In order to protect themselves from this mystery killer and all the other dangers that lurk in a forest at night time, Zack and Sonja return to the plane and take shelter there. While they sleep, we get a brief scene where we see the mystery killer calling up Cora via the satellite phone to share the next stage of their plan.

Sonja and Zack Are Dead

At the end of Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue episode 5, Zack and Sonja make it to the ELT, but unfortunately, the top of the hill is covered in clouds. Zack sits down near the ELT to take a breather, and Sonja goes out to look for some wood they can light to create some smoke and signal the chopper when the clouds dissipate. The mystery killer uses this opportunity to incapacitate Sonja and take the gun away from her. Then they point it at Zack, which forces him to walk to the ledge of the hill. Zack basically tells the killer that the survivors wouldn’t have learned about the drugs if they didn’t start killing them off one by one. If the killer would’ve just waited it out, allowed Carlos to set up the ELT, and let all the survivors leave in the rescue helicopter, the killer probably could have returned to the spot at a later date and then retrieved the drugs.

But, instead of doing so, they resorted to killing the survivors, which prolonged their stay at the crash site and led to such a massive debacle. And Zack wanted to know why the masked person before him did that. They don’t give Zack an answer and shoot him twice, causing him to fall off the ledge, likely to his death. Then they go over to Sonja, reveal their face (Sonja seemingly recognizes the individual), and then kill her too. No, the episode doesn’t reveal the identity of the serial killer, and, at this point, I don’t even want to speculate because it’s impossible to give the correct answer. The show has done a good job of hiding this person’s identity. It can be one of the passengers, or it’s someone we haven’t seen so far. Whoever it is, I hope the mystery is solved in the finale, or else I’m going to lose it. If the show holds back the revelation for a potential second season, I will riot.
