‘Nine Bodies In A Mexican Morgue’ Finale Ending Explained: Can There Be A Season 2?

Published

The ending of Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue was all about the DEA and the Mexican police arresting Kevin for not only peddling drugs from Guatemala to Houston, but also for killing 8 people and using them as mules to transport the drugs to Los Trios. Kevin thought he had killed Zack as well, but he had miraculously survived and told David, Frank, and his wife, Claire, about everything that had transpired at the crash site. The DEA agents deduced that Aero Alux was a front, and Kevin, along with Cora and Emilio, were working for the Mexican cartel and the Miami mafia. David thought that there was no way to find Kevin anymore, but Zack pointed out that since Kevin was under the assumption that he had thwarted everyone, he wouldn’t be in a hurry to leave Mexico any time soon. Hence, Zack, Frank, Claire, Chief Inspector Revueltas, and a handful of police officers headed towards the Aero Alux HQ to apprehend Kevin, Cora, and Emilio. Did they succeed? Did they fail? What can we expect from a potential second season of Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue? Let’s discuss.

Spoiler Alert

Why Did Kevin Kill Cora?

In my opinion, Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue brought the curtains down on this whole affair in a satisfying and conclusive way. But it left us with a few unanswered questions, with the one at the top of the list being the reason behind Kevin’s decision to kill Cora. It seemed like Kevin was merely miffed at the notion that Cora was having an affair with Octavio, and since he couldn’t tolerate a two-timer like her, he poisoned her with the mushrooms he had found in the forest. It’s quite possible that that was why Kevin did what he did. However, the issue is that we don’t know enough about the real Kevin to understand the reasoning behind his decisions. The version of him that we saw throughout the show was an act. The parts of his personality that we got to see in the last 20 minutes of the season indicated that he was extremely sinister, conniving, heartless, and dangerous. So, yeah, it’s totally possible that he couldn’t tolerate the fact that “his girl” was actually in love with a dead pilot. That said, it’s also possible that he suspected that if the plane hadn’t crashed and the drugs were safely delivered to Houston, Cora would’ve cut Kevin out of the deal and run away with the payload with Octavio.

Maybe Cora was never in love with either Kevin or Octavio, and was merely using both of them as a means to an end. Hence, Kevin decided to end her. Here’s the real question, though: did Cora actually die? So, in my recap of episode 2, based on some cursory research that I did thanks to the internet, I said that the mushrooms used by Kevin to kill Travis looked more like the Stropharia caerulea and less like the Amanita bisporigera. The Amanita bisporigera is known for being highly toxic, while the Stropharia caerulea causes gastrointestinal issues that don’t necessarily lead to death. Travis had a lot of other health issues, so maybe he couldn’t handle those mushrooms. Cora is comparatively healthier. Therefore, there’s a good chance that she just suffered a passing stomach ache, and that’s it. If she does survive, maybe she’s going to tell the police and the DEA that Kevin forced her to work with him to peddle drugs and she is actually innocent. Does that sound plausible, or am I reaching because I want to see Carolina Guerra on the screen again?

Where Was Emilio Going?

Kevin’s last interaction with Emilio was weird. In fact, Emilio’s presence in the whole show was oddly mysterious. He never gave any opinions about anything. He helped Cora however she wanted him to. Then Kevin gave him a thick wad of cash and what looked like half of the packets of drugs and told him to forget about their interaction. What?! And when Emilio was leaving the Aero Alux HQ, he locked eyes with Claire, but nobody thought about stopping him? So, what was Emilio’s whole deal? Where was he off to? My best guess is that he’s a representative of the Mexican cartel. He wasn’t just a driver. He was with Cora to ensure that she and Kevin pulled off the drug heist without betraying the cartel. He acted all innocent and dumb, but I think if Kevin tried to do something out of pocket (well, more out of pocket than using dead bodies as drug mules), he would’ve taught the bespectacled villain a lesson. Since he got the payload that he’s supposed to deliver to his cartel bosses, he left Kevin to his devices. However, I think he’ll be a key player in the next season (if it is greenlit), especially since Claire knows what he looks like.

That said, since Claire is the only person amongst the DEA and the Mexican police that has seen Emilio’s face, maybe he is going to try and kill her before she brings the authorities to his doorstep. I don’t know why, but I have a feeling that Mariana is a cartel plant, and if Claire gets too close to Emilio, she is going to threaten to kill Lucy. It’s also possible that Emilio and Mariana are romantically involved and they are going to arm-twist not just Claire, but the cartel as well, so that they can live freely. I’m basing this theory on the few scenes where Mariana keeps talking about leaving her job as Lucy’s babysitter. I mean, if you take inflation into consideration, her decision to quit in this economy feels suspicious. Hence, I’m not ruling out the possibility that Mariana is in cahoots with Emilio and she knows that he is going to get his hands on a lot of money, and that she intends to go away with him. Of course, her dreams will be ruined when she’ll need to kidnap a little girl just to keep Claire at bay. But, hey, at least that’s better than having a handful of lines where you just talk about resigning from your babysitting duties.

What’s Going to Happen to Kevin?

Hands down, the most satisfying part of the finale was the full-circle moment that Kevin got. I mean, imagine peddling drugs from Guatemala to Houston by packing a private plane with packets of cocaine. But then the plane crashes, and you are stranded in the middle of nowhere with millions of dollars worth of drugs. That’s when you have the epiphany to use your co-passengers as mules. However, you have to kill all these people off in a way that means nobody suspects you, and you are the last man standing. Somehow, that plan works out. You think you have killed all the passengers who know you. You have killed your girlfriend as well. You have boarded another plane, which is also full of drugs. You are on your way, probably to Houston, and that’s when you see the guy you tortured endlessly in order to frame him as the guy who was killing the passengers coming at you with a bloody handgun.

You manage to achieve liftoff; you are flying over the jungles of Mexico, and that’s when your new plane sputters and dies because that guy you tortured has hit the fuel tank. So, you are about to be stranded in the middle of nowhere, yet again, with a plane and some packets of drugs. Oh wait, you don’t have to imagine any of that, because that’s what happens to Kevin. Isn’t that so cathartic? This man is such a heinous piece of work. He has killed so many people. He has lied so much. And to see him end up in a spot that’s worse than the one he got out of is hilarious. Of course, the finale of Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue didn’t reveal if Kevin died when the plane crashed in the forest, but I guess he did. Now, he knows how to survive in a forest and use an ELT to send out a rescue signal. The only issue is that as soon as someone learns of his location, they’ll come to arrest him, not rescue him. That said, if he puts up a good enough act and convinces the authorities that Zack is lying, he might thwart them again. Think about it for a second. Zack is the only person who knows Kevin. Nobody has seen Kevin with the drugs. If Kevin hides his share of the drugs and concocts this theory that Zack is the mastermind behind this whole operation, what can Zack really do to prove his innocence? These two are the only living witnesses of the events that transpired at the crash site. So, it’s Zack’s word against Kevin’s. Who is going to win this battle of wits? That’s the million-dollar question.

What to Expect From Season 2?

There are conflicting reports as to whether or not Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue is a limited series or a TV series that can run for multiple seasons. Then again, projects like Loki, Shogun, The White Lotus, Good Omens, 13 Reasons Why, and The Flight Attendant started off as miniseries but then got renewed. So, even if Nine Bodies was conceptualized as a limited series, if MGM+ thinks that it deserves to come back for a second season, it might. Therefore, I am going to address both scenarios. Alright, if we do get Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue Season 2, I expect the first half of the series to be a manhunt and the second half to be an interrogation room-centric drama where Zack and Kevin have to prove that the other is the real culprit. Since the audience already knows who the real Slim Shady is, the writers have to give some compelling arguments to both Zack and Kevin so that their verbal battle is nothing short of electric. As mentioned before, I think Claire is going to be separated from Zack again, because she’ll need to rescue Lucy from the clutches of the cartel or Mariana and Emilio. I suppose Cora is going to make a full recovery, and it’ll be interesting to see if she chooses to side with Kevin or speak against him. I have a feeling that Doctor Guijarro’s husband will have a prominent role because he’d like to avenge his wife by killing Cora.

Although Vega, Lopez, Sanchez, and Guzman were great, I don’t see them returning in a potential Season 2. Revueltas, though, is going to have a much bigger role, I suppose. In addition to all that, I guess the series is going to shed some light on the inner workings of the Mexican cartel, the Miami mafia, and their drug business. With all that said, I actually don’t want the show to come back for a second season, and the reason is in the title. The Mexican morgue doesn’t have nine bodies in it anymore. Sure, you could say that the story doesn’t need to be restricted by the fact that its premise is in the title, and instead, it can be a reminder of how this whole drama started. But I am inclined to disagree. There’s no point in coming up with a plot for a show called Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue when there are eight bodies in a Mexican morgue. Now, somehow, if the showrunners manage to bring things back to Los Trios, I won’t complain. If they can’t, well, they should let the audience imagine what happened to Kevin, Cora, Zack, Claire, Emilio, and all those associated with them. Anyway, those are my thoughts on the show and my expectations for a potential second season. What are your opinions on the same? Let me know in the comments section below.
