‘North Of North’ Season 2 Theories: Will Siaja Replace Helen?

Published

The Inuit TV show North Of North, which has finally come to Netflix, is a Canadian sitcom set in, well, the “North Of North,” i.e., Ice Cove, Nunavut. The 8-part series follows Siaja, a 26-year-old Inuk who realizes she feels lost after her daughter starts to go to school. Siaja has followed the traditional path after being married at the very young age of 21, being a good wife and mother. However, when Siaja has some alone time, she realizes she doesn’t have anything of her own, unlike her husband, who is basically beloved in the community, and for what? While Siaja needs to clear her mind and really sort out her internal problems, since she’s hidden this part of her away for so long, it decides to leap out with no inhibitions. This leads to Siaja breaking up with her husband, Ting, very publicly and walking out on the marriage. What follows is Siaja’s quest to find something she’s good at and can be proud of. At the end of the first season, Siaja realizes that her calling comes from the community itself. She loves her community and wants to do everything she can to help it. She also forgives her mom for keeping her dad’s identity a secret and trying to push him away, finally realizing that she’s been through a lot more than she could’ve imagined. At the time of writing this, there’s been no confirmation of a second season for North Of North, but based on the reception, there is still hope! So, what can we expect from season 2?

Spoiler Alert

A 3rd Man in Siaja’s Love Life?

In typical sitcom second coming-of-age fashion, Siaja is in a love triangle in the first season of North Of North. She’s excited to find a new man almost immediately after running off from Ting; however, with all the work stuff, she doesn’t necessarily find the time. She does spend a lot of time with Kuuk, the new guy in town who also happens to be her dad’s assistant, but I suppose he’s too good for just a fling, so she puts off trying to be with him. But, in the end, his girlfriend, who didn’t appreciate him coming up to the Arctic, shows up, and they’re all cozy. So, what’ll happen to Siaja now? At the end of episode 8, Kuuk’s girlfriend tells Siaja that they’ve decided to stay back. I suppose Kuuk spoke to her about how he felt like he was always doing things for her, but she didn’t even care that he was trying to find his own place in the world. In typical fashion, Kuuk is the ideal man, so the show paints his girlfriend as the “evil” one who didn’t care about what he wanted in life, which left us rooting for Kuuk and Siaja, but in the end, with her choosing to move with him, the girlfriend isn’t just Siaja’s love rival but also her work rival. This will lead to a lot of conflict between Siaja and Kuuk, and I really hope there won’t be any cheating involved, because I’m tired of the same old tropes. Anyway, this has me thinking that another trope (which I don’t mind as much) will come into play, and that is having another man come into Siaja’s life. Usually, this man is there to make the original love interest jealous, which I’m sure Kuuk will be, but I hope this man is a solid 10/10, and there won’t be any turning back for Siaja. I think that would be quite fun and dramatic, no?

On the other hand, Ting is still interested in being a part of Siaja’s life. I wonder what’ll happen to the kid he offered to adopt, but I don’t think Siaja can ever forgive him (I’d really hope she wouldn’t), but she might be leaning on him a little as a co-parent and just as a person who knows so much about her. Ting will make improvements, though, and I have a feeling he’ll still be a big part of the second season if there is one.

Will Alistair and Neevee End Up Together?

There will be a lot of drama between Siaja’s parents because Alistair is mad about Neevee basically cheating on him, even though they never made any actual commitments. But he doesn’t know that his baby mama was afraid that he’d take their baby away from her. This fear always made Neevee a fan of abandonment, and she chose to be cold-hearted rather than heartbroken. I’m sure Siaja will be the one to help the duo out and get them together in the end. Alistair definitely cares about the family very much, and all Neevee really needs to do is give him a chance.

Will Siaja Look For Her Sister?

At the end of North Of North season 1, Siaja learns that she has a sister that her mom had at age 16. This kid was taken away from her by the White dad, and she never got to see her again. Neevee kept this hidden for 26 years from Siaja, but now that she knows and sees how the world’s so different, Siaja will probably go looking for her sister, and this will possibly be the main plot of season 2. On the other hand, if she doesn’t go looking physically, there’ll likely be something that brings her sister back home, and they will reunite.

Will Siaja Replace Helen?

As much as I appreciate that Helen’s around to show us how annoying it is when White folks take credit for Native community work, I think season 2 will see Siaja take charge of her life as well as possibly replace Helen because, clearly, she’s better than her at the job. Additionally, the researchers heard her speak, and she’s got her dad to back her up, so I’m pretty sure she’s going to become boss lady and make all her dreams come true.
