‘Olympo’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Did Amaia Take Drugs For The Competition?

Published

In Olympo’s ending, Amaia is left alone and sinking despite having succeeded at breaking the world record for the most number of spins in their synchronized swimming routine. The Netflix’s show tells the story of star athletes at Spain’s HPC Pyrenees. It’s a show about ambition and what it takes to become the best in this competitive sporting world. In the final episode of the show, Jana joins hands with Hugo, in my opinion, not knowing the full extent of what he’s doing with the “Olympo” athletes. In the show, Hugo is the man who gives the athletes with sponsorships drugs to make them unbeatable. The athletes sign an NDA and contract before coming on, but they don’t really read what’s in it, making it difficult for them to fight the problem when it comes time. Zoe, Roque, and Cristian are initially chosen as “Olympo” scholars. Additionally, at the beginning of the show, Nuria, Amaia’s best friend and swimming partner, is taken away somewhere after nearly drowning from doing too many spins, thanks to Amaia pushing her as the captain of the team. Amaia is certain that her best friend has been doping, which is why she was able to do so many spins, but this leaves her misjudged by everybody because it looks like she pushed her own best friend to her limits out of jealousy. What will Amaia discover? And will she be able to save the kids from “Olympo?” Let’s find out in the ending of the show.

Spoiler Alert

What Happens To Fatima?

In Olympo’s finale, Amaia is desperate to see Nuria be caught so that she can protect the other athletes from the drugs that “Olympo” is giving them. But the ADA, the drug-testing organization, fails to find anything in Nuria’s system. There is some residue that could be found, according to the doctors, but Hugo tells them that they have more to lose than him, so they need to make sure nothing comes up. In the meantime, it’s time for the big qualifying race for the world championship, so Zoe’s taken in for a shot. But Roque is brought in at the same time because he beats up Charly and gets hurt in the process. To be fair, Charly is the guy who stepped on him and ruined his chances of playing in the next match. Roque would’ve probably not gone to Hugo, had his hand not been broken. But Roque realizes it’s not only his arm that feels entirely fine despite looking like a purple blowfish; his entire body isn’t feeling any kind of pain. This makes him realize that whatever “Olympo” is putting in them is nowhere near ordinary. But Roque being brought in allows Zoe enough time to swipe a bottle of the drug for herself to give to the ADA.

On the other hand, Amaia’s mom shows up, and she’s absolutely awful to Amaia, who is already under too much pressure for being kicked out. Amaia is as competitive as she is because of her mother. She tells her she’s not good enough, and that with her shins, she has to work extra hard. But we’ve been seeing how consistently Amaia’s been practicing, of course, not after the Nuria situation, but it’s clear that she’s the most hardworking of the lot because of her mom. She even admits to herself that she’s not got any friends or a life of any kind because she’s been training since she was 14. This is also why she’s so upset that someone like Nuria would break her trust like that and choose to do the wrong thing. Now that her mom’s around, Amaia has to compete, or she might lose the sport forever. Amaia decides to put laxatives in Fatima’s drink, but Fatima ends up catching her. But when she’s about to go tell their coach, she slips down the stairs, making her unfit to compete anyway. The question here is, did Amaia cause the fall?

We could speculate that Amaia did, because her reaction is one of relief. This is what she wanted, but we can’t tell for sure whether she caused Fatima to fall or if she’s just relieved that she got her win anyway. But ironically, Nuria decides to go with Peque instead of Amaia. To Amaia, this looks like she’s doing it just to spite her, but the truth is, Nuria’s doing it on purpose to recruit Amaia into joining Hugo’s “Olympo.” I suppose we can assume we’ll find out what happened to Fatima when she wakes up soon after the race, but we’ll have to wait for a second season to really know.

What Does Zoe Do?

Renata is intersex and barred from competing at the beginning of the show; however, she’s working on changing that, and the treatment is successful. But she knows that Zoe is doping, which is something that’s on her mind when she’s back to compete for the world championship. The race begins, but Renata gets left behind and falls. Seeing this, Zoe makes an extra effort to win. Zoe’s just trying to prove to herself that she’s still got it in her. She’s an excellent athlete, talented too, so she doesn’t need any PED to prove herself. This is something Renata doesn’t know. But soon after winning, Zoe’s dismissed by Hugo, in front of her parents, and her mother blames her for it all. At the beginning of the show, Zoe and her friend were in a car accident, and it looks like that friend died. Ever since, Zoe seems to have given up because she blames herself. Though she was forced to join the HPC and immediately given the “Olympo” sponsorship, she finally found her footing after being around more people like her. People who understand the pressure and are forced to work themselves to the bone. Now, even without “Olympo,” Zoe’s going to be successful because she’s strong, and by teaming up with Roque and Cristian, she plans on exposing Hugo and his plans.

Zoe tells the other two and Sebas about the stolen vial, but someone overhears them. It happens to be Renata, and she’s also on their side, knowing that Zoe has chosen to do the right thing.

What Happens To Roque?

Roque realizes when he’s not getting any sensation in his body after beating up Charly that whatever they’re doing to him at “Olympo” is, in fact, dangerous. He apologizes to Sebas for hanging him out to dry too. Roque didn’t want to be the face of queer rugby; he just wanted to play his game while not being discriminated against just because he’s gay. Homophobia in sports has been a thing for ages. All he wanted was to have a fair chance because he’s good at the game, but that clearly backfired. His queerness was used to turn his team against him. We also see Charly and Fatima come together near the end of this episode, meaning they will definitely plan some sort of thing against Roque and Amaia. But for now, Roque’s teaming up with Zoe and Cristian against Hugo.

Did Amaia Do Drugs?

During the final act, the ADA does a drug test on Nuria, and she comes out clean. The conversation Amaia has with Nuria opens her eyes a little bit. Nuria tells her that it’s not about how much you’re willing to put in, but how far you’re willing to go to be the best. Being bogged down by the pressure from her mother, the feeling of wanting to give up because there’s no way she’s going to defeat “Olympo” by herself, and the feeling that she’s entirely alone, Amaia realizes she has no choice but to go along with Nuria’s plan.

In Olympo’s ending, Amaia is the one chosen to perform with Nuria, and she comes out with fire in her eyes and a zeal to be the best. It is clear at this point that she’s taken the drug, and the duo are so good, they beat the world record for the most spins. Now, the tables have turned, and it is Amaia who is ready to do anything to go to the Olympics, whereas Cristian, Roque, and Zoe are left with nothing. This whole time, the thing that Amaia was most against finally gets to her. But unfortunately for her, Zoe gives the ADA the vial. But this is not the end, because despite all the smiling faces and them having done something unbelievable, Amaia ends up falling unconscious into the pool. This leaves us with the fear that the drugs were too much and that she might be dying, or the same thing that happened to Nuria has happened to Amaia too. Maybe it’s a heart attack, just like Nuria had at the beginning when she did too many spins.

What we don’t get much information about is what “Olympo” is exactly. I suppose they’re just an organization hoping to support Spanish athletes at the Olympics. In the end, we’re left back at square one, because as long as there is somebody taking the drugs, they will be better than the competition, forcing the rest to get the same treatment. It’s a cycle that Zoe is now hoping to break, but will she be able to? Now that the ADA has the vial, Hugo’s plans are in danger, so it could be the end of “Olympo” for good. Guess we’ll have to wait for a second season to find out. I think Charly and Fatima may end up joining hands with Nuria and Amaia rather than Zoe and her gang, because Charly still believes Roque is the bad guy. Charly was the one who was homophobic; of course, he should’ve expected a reaction from Roque. At the end of the day, all of these athletes are still kids and supremely gullible. The question is, will they be able to eradicate a person like Hugo? Amaia didn’t manage to succeed because she blamed people rather than understanding their side of things. She was too caught up in being righteous rather than understanding, making everyone her enemy. This leaves her a hypocrite.
