Episode 7 of season 5 of Only Murders In The Building brings the billionaire murder club back to the forefront. I’m not going to lie, I did kind of miss the trio, or maybe a bit of that Logan Lerman and Selena Gomez banter. Episode 7 brings us straight into the mouth of the lion’s den, but does it give us any actual answers? I’m afraid I didn’t catch any specifics myself, but I do appreciate that the OMITB gang has their finger on the pulse again. Definitely, the most fun thing about this episode was watching Mabel use Oliver anecdotes to get Charles to answer all the questions in the quiz! We also get a short visit from the mayor in this episode, and everything is a bit chaotic, but hopefully, we’ll be getting closer to answers about Lester’s murder soon. What if this time it really wasn’t a murder, though? Anyway, with that said, let’s jump straight into episode 7 of season 5.
Spoiler Alert
What Happened 9 Hours Earlier?
Episode 7 begins with Oliver running into a farmer couple all by himself, trying to figure out how to get help, with Mabel and Charles nowhere to be seen. Ironically, there’s a silver alert out on Oliver. The episode then immediately switches to 9 hours earlier, where the gang is listening to an audioclip by Bash Steed. Oliver is immediately inspired, claiming it’s $18 well spent. But Mabel’s annoyed because it didn’t give them any information about where Bash might be and how they can find the 3 billionaires. While Charles and Ollie are having one of their typical arguments, the mayor shows up to be a guest on the podcast. Beau is there to talk about making the streets safer; from murder, that is, but is that all? Beau tries to get the gang talking about the murder on the podcast, but Mabel stops him because they’re not meant to discuss it, considering the 3 suspects bought their network. Beau then sends his assistant, Romy, to go get some coffee, because she’s actually Bash’s niece and is specifically around to keep an eye on Beau. He’s certain that Bash is the murderer they’re looking for.
Now, it seems Beau is essentially doing Bash’s bidding because when he first stood for office, he didn’t have the money to run against his very rich opponents until Bash offered to help. Obviously no help is free, and while initially it was small stuff like building permits, Bash is basically controlling Beau now. Beau also lets the gang know that Bash literally has the law under his control, so what Beau really wants is to use the gang to send Bash off to prison. But he isn’t just helpful in encouraging them; he also gives them a time and place to find the billionaire trio.
The next thing you know, the gang goes to the address Beau gives them after Oliver puts on some fancy Broadway boots. Also, Loretta’s busy travelling and unreachable, and her flights have been delayed, so she is stressed! When the gang gets to the location, they find the billionaire trio and notice them talking scary medical terms. Turns out they’re playing a game of operation; also, they saw Bash’s creepy son outside, and he told them that his dad will send kids who interrupt to the cellar. Oh, and to add to that, there’s no reception or connectivity. No way to get cabs, etc. Oliver and Camila have an argument about her touching up his flat and switching things up. She thinks she’s made him taste king of the Upper West Side. While Oliver is initially eager to argue, when she threatens to make potpourri out of his body parts (ones I can’t mention here), he goes mum.
It’s yet another 3-way split. Bash tells Charles about how being a good dad to Algie is important to him because he was too busy when his other kids were growing up. Meanwhile, in the middle of all of this, Jay is still eager to take Mabel out to dinner (what is with her always getting the best love interests? Dang). But Mabel’s strong-willed and a bit of a genius, so she gets Jay to admit that there’s something more important going on here. She then suggests the two groups play a game against each other, and if the podcast gang loses, they’ll stop investigating the rich guys. Oliver’s too afraid of the results and decides to make a run for it.
Who Wins The Game?
The game they play is celebrity, and the rich guys draw historical figures as their category card, and Mabel realizes that they’ve got no way of winning against them. Anyway, the trio gets 5 answers. Ironically, Mabel and Charles pick Broadway, and Mabel knows nothing about it. However, even without Oliver there, Mabel is grateful for him, because she uses all of his anecdotes to get Charles to answer the questions, and they win. So now it’s time for the trio to tell them why they were playing. Turns out, the night Lester died, the trio were playing for the right to start New York City’s first casino. But, additionally, Mabel realizes there’s something in the trophy they’ve been playing for as well, and it turns out to be the missing finger!
On the other hand, Oliver shows up to the farm from the beginning of the episode, and learns that Loretta’s reported him missing after he finally gets service. He asks to be saved, but clearly the farmers aren’t willing to believe anything he says, considering he opens with his wife being a Hollywood actress and then talks about the mayor showing up to join his podcast. Meanwhile, Jay tries to stop Charles and Mabel from leaving with the finger, but Mabel manages to tug at his heartstrings by saying his legacy will be “trapping” a woman for a finger. They finally escape, and before they know it, they’re outside, where Oliver shows up to rescue them on a tractor. Whatever he does, Oliver loves his friends and will always come back to help them.
At the end of episode 7 of Only Murders In The Building season 5, while the gang is waiting for Williams to show up to take the finger and finally identify who it belongs to, Camila shows up, telling them that the finger determines who gets to build their casino. Turns out New York is giving out only one permit. Camila then pulls out a derringer and threatens the gang to give her the finger. Mabel’s certain she’s bluffing, but Oliver’s too afraid, so she surrenders the appendage. See, Camila’s already started her work because she’s slowly been buying all the flats at the Arconia so that she can use it for the “Camila Club.” She closes with “hopefully they’ll have murders in your next building too,” which is quite the line, but maybe they’ll be able to save the Arconia.
