‘Only Murders In The Building’ Season 4 Finale Recap And Ending Explained: Is Rex Bailey Dead?

Published

In the 9th episode of Only Murders in the Building season 4, we got to know that Marshall Pope, the writer of the “Only Murders” film, was the one who had killed Glen Stubbins, and he also had something to do with Sazz’s murder. At the end of the episode, Mabel found a script that had been written by Sazz. She didn’t understand what was happening, and that’s when she confronted Marshall and asked him what he was up to. So let’s find out what happened in the season 4 finale and if Charles, Mabel, and Oliver are finally able to uncover the mystery behind Sazz Patakhi’s death.

Spoiler Alert

Why did Rex kill Sazz Patakhi?

The truth was out in the open, and Rex Bailey, aka Marshall P. Pope, couldn’t hide his secret any longer. So the story began when Rex started working with Sazz on the film directed by Ron Howard. Heslipped up, and according to him, Ron Howard overreacted and fired him from his job. Sazz told Rex that his career as a stuntman was over, but she asked him to see the silver lining. She told him that he could start working as a writer and put in all the effort to chase his dreams. Rex’s father was a hunter, and he never trusted that his son could do anything in the creative field. Rex’s father told him that he had six months to prove his mettle as a writer, as otherwise he would have to come back to his house and do as he was told. Rex wanted to prove him wrong at all costs. Rex wrote scripts and pitched them to each and every production house that he could. But then one day Sazz called him over to her place and told him about the script she had been working on. Rex was the first person to read the “Only Murders” script. He’d underestimated Sazz’s potential from the very beginning. But when he read the script, he was blown away. He knew Sazz’s script was better than anything he had written in his entire life.

At that moment in Only Murders in the Building season 4, Rex had two options: he could either be a good friend and tell Sazz exactly what he felt about her writing, or he could use his manipulative tactics and use the situation to his advantage. Rex chose to be a villain and by doing so he proved his father right. He told Sazz that her script needed some amendments and that it was not so impressive. He made a copy of the script and then pitched it once again to various production houses. To his surprise, Bev Melon instantly liked the script, and she decided to make a film on it. Sazz obviously came to know about it, and she couldn’t believe that her own protege would do something like that. She called Rex over to her place because she wanted to confront him. After the meeting, Rex realized that the only way he could take credit for the script was by killing Sazz Patakhi. So he went to the West Tower, shot Sazz from the window, then came back to Arconia to cover his tracks and destroy all the evidence that could lead the police to him. Rex used the ledge instead of the stairs to get back to Arconia, which is why he was able to do everything in a matter of minutes. Rex believed that he would be able to hide the truth, but what he didn’t know was that Sazz’s “number one” was not going to stop chasing him no matter what.

What Happened To Rex Bailey?

Charles got a message from Rex where he threatened to kill Mabel if Charles or Oliver tried to call the police on him. Charles knew that he wasn’t able to save Sazz, but this time around he wouldn’t let anything happen to Mabel. Charles decided to go to Vince’s apartment and then use the ledge to break into Dudenoff’s room, where Mabel was being held hostage. Now Mabel bought some time by telling Rex that he wouldn’t be able to change the dialogues of his script if he killed her. Rex knew that to write an authentic script he needed Mabel’s help. Vince and Rudy created a distraction by knocking on Mabel’s door while Oliver and Charles entered the room from the window. Charles and Oliver got hold of Rex’s gun, but before they could do anything, somebody from Charles’ apartment at Arconia shot at Rex. It was Jan. She had been hiding at Charles’ place since the day she paid him a visit in Season 4. Jan wanted revenge as badly as Charles. She was just biding her time all along, as she wanted Charles to solve the mystery and find the killer. The moment she realized that it was Rex who had killed Sazz, she didn’t waste a moment and made him pay for his actions. Everything went back to normal, and the shooting of the “Only Murders” film resumed. Charles was finally at peace and he decided to sprinkle the ashes of Sazz Patakhi on the grounds of her trampoline park.

What to expect from season 5?

Everytime Mabel, Charles, and Oliver solved a murder case; another dead body showed up out of nowhere. This had been the case for all the previous seasons, and Charles was scared that something similar would happen at the end of Only Murders in the Building season 4 too. Oliver didn’t want him to jinx his wedding. He got married to Loretta finally, though he decided that he wouldn’t move with her to New Zealand. Loretta’s shoot location had been shifted as, according to the algorithm, New Zealand suited their requirements well. Now Loretta wanted Oliver to move in with her, but then she realized that his life was in Arconia. They decided that they wouldn’t let the obstacles stop them from doing what they wanted to do. They decided to make their relationship work and face all the challenges together. Now, at the end of Only Murders in the Building season 4, episode 10, a lady named Sofia Caccimelio came to meet Charles and Mabel. She told them that her husband, Nicky had gone missing and that she wanted to hire them to find him. Charles told her that they only investigated cases that took place in Arconia, and Sofia told him that her husband’s disappearance had everything to do with the godforsaken place. Charles turned down the offer, and Sofia left Arconia with a disappointed look in her eyes. But then another twist came in the end, because of which I feel Charles, Mabel, and Oliver will be compelled to take Sofia’s case in the future. The trio found Lester’s (Arconia’s doorman) dead body lying in the fountain, exactly where Oliver had gotten married, just a day ago.

Only Murders in the Building Season 4 left us on a cliffhanger, and the trio once again found themselves in the midst of a murder mystery. I believe that Lester’s death and the disappearance of Nicky Caccimelio are linked somehow. The man had disappeared into thin air, and Sofia told Charles that it had everything to do with Arconia. Probably Lester knew some secret information that the killer didn’t want him to reveal. Maybe the killer would have felt threatened by Lester, and that is why he decided to kill him. In season 5, we will once again see the “Only Murders trio” at the helm of another investigation. It would be interesting to see the kind of challenges that come in their way and how they overcome them.
