Episode 2 of Our Unwritten Seoul gets into what happens after Mi-Ji and Mi-Rae switch positions. In this episode, we get to understand a little bit more about both of them as individuals and how much they actually care about each other. Additionally, we’re able to see a little bit more about Ho-Su’s relationship with the twins. This episode explores what it’s like to free yourself from the burden of the stress of work. While the twins are doing different things and have different interests, showcasing their unique personalities, on the inside, they’re both feeling the same way, entirely dejected. Switching roles seems to have made them feel a little bit at ease, and as time passes, it looks like they’ll easily be able to get into the groove of things. But with that said, let’s get straight into episode 2.
Spoiler Alert
Why Was Ho-Su Worried About Mi-Rae?
Episode 2 begins with Mi-Rae and Mi-Ji getting their hair done so they look the part of the other. Mi-Rae doesn’t dye her hair blonde, though, making it seem like Mi-Ji switched back. Before switching, they both check on the other, making sure that they’re genuinely okay doing this. But Mi-Rae also tells Mi-Ji not to do anything at work and stay silent so that nobody can tell something’s different. But we already know Mi-Ji’s different, and she decides to act out the second she’s at work. Mi-Rae tells Mi-Ji that she shouldn’t sit at the table during the meeting, but Mi-Ji does, and gets put on the spot about what to do next. But of course, everyone is bullying her, so the boss tells her she doesn’t have to say anything. It takes her a few days, but she becomes used to not having work and chilling by herself, even though it gets on her nerves. On the other hand, Mi-Rae starts to work on the strawberry farm, and everybody thinks there’s something weird about her because she seems to be driving her bicycle like a drunk. After about 10 days, Mi-Ji gets caught stretching by Mi-Rae’s boss, and he offers her a small errand to do. This is, of course, a trap, but innocent Mi-Ji doesn’t realize it; despite Mi-Rae having given her a list of things to follow, she misses out on them. On the other hand, Mi-Rae gets bored with the strawberry field because it’s off-season and there isn’t any work to do. This gets on her nerves, but she has to endure. Additionally, she doesn’t want to visit their grandmother at the hospital, because she’d be able to tell which of the sisters it is in an instant.
Meanwhile, Ho-Su gets praised at work for doing a good job with a super-rich client. But he feels terrible because the person they’re fighting in court, a poor man, doesn’t get any compensation because of what he suggested. Ho-Su’s boss reminds him that his job is to win, not to worry about people, but he’s the kind of person who is easily bothered and gets stuck on things for days on end if he isn’t able to fix them. This is something Mi-Ji knows very well about him, but we’ll get to that in a bit. Anyway, Ho-Su learns that his boss sent him to see Mi-Rae specifically because he knew that they were classmates and that he could use that to make her withdraw the case. Ho-Su asks to meet with Mi-Rae before learning about this, and they go out. Mi-Ji immediately gets excited when she’s at the Han River, and we get a flashback about Ho-Su and her talking about grabbing ramyeon by the riverside. Still, I suppose Ho-Su believes it’s still Mi-Rae because that’s what she says. Guess he just wants to make sure things are okay with her, seeing as there was going to be an external investigation.
Does Mi-Ji Get The Job Done?
Mi-Rae’s errand is to get an old woman to take a look at a document related to selling her restaurant. While this seems like an easy enough job, it ends up being horribly difficult to do. Mi-Ji first grabs some food at the restaurant to learn a bit about the place and the grandma. But the second she brings up the document, she’s thrown out, and she also has salt thrown at her (a symbol of warding off evil). But Mi-Ji endures; she keeps coming back to the shop every day and getting salt thrown at her because she desperately wants to do a good job for Mi-Rae’s sake. On the other hand, Mi-Rae cleans up the strawberry farm’s storage room and gets in trouble for throwing away a chair that the owner wanted to keep. He yells at her for trying to do something she wasn’t told to do; apparently, he was just trying to keep an eye on her. He claims he wants a business partner, but Mi-Rae tells him that he isn’t even treating her as a human, and by ignoring her every day, he’s basically bullying her, telling her to do whatever she likes. Later, she brings the chair back and leaves a document for the guy, a possible proposal for an actual partnership? I’m not sure. Mi-Rae then learns that Mi-Ji is known as Yu Candy in town, because she’s always happy and never even seems to frown. Mi-Ji’s ex-boyfriend tells Mi-Rae (who he thinks is Mi-Ji) that he hasn’t seen her this low since graduation. I wonder what happened at graduation.
At this point, Mi-Ji and Mi-Rae both realize something they’ve been missing out on—they’re alike in more ways than they thought, and they also don’t know each other well enough, having taken their twinness for granted, I suppose. I think switching places is going to make them see more of the other than they ever have before. Finally, having no work to do, since she kind of quit at the strawberry farm, Mi-Rae goes to see her grandmother. At first, she calls her Mi-Ji, but when it’s just the two of us, their grandmother asks Mi-Rae how she’s really been doing in Seoul. This makes her tear up immediately, making it clear how much their grandmother means to her, and how much she’s been suffering by herself. It’s good she’s come back. Meanwhile, Mi-Ji yells at the restaurant lady for treating her so badly and tells her that all she needs to do is read the document; she doesn’t have to sell her property. She still gets salt thrown at her, but Mi-Ji feels much more relaxed after having vented her feelings.
At the end of Our Unwritten Seoul episode 2, Mi-Ji meets with Ho-Su again because he wants to apologize to Mi-Rae for making her withdraw the case. But when they’re together, Mi-Ji gets a call from the lady at the restaurant telling her that she’ll meet her the next day at 10 AM, since she was so desperate to be treated as a human. Her reaction confirms to Ho-Su that it’s not Mi-Rae he’s talking to, but Mi-Ji. Ho-Su’s always known which of them is which, because he clearly likes Mi-Ji a lot, but we’ll just have to wait and find out where that goes.
