‘Our Unwritten Seoul’ Episode 8 Recap & Ending Explained: Will Mi-Rae Stay Back?

Published

After yesterday’s episode, I said Our Unwritten Seoul is one of the best ongoing shows right now. It’s emotional, but it’s also fun, and we’ve got a fantastic cast, not just the leading one, the supporting women who play the moms are excellent too. But after today’s episode, I’m wondering if they went a little overboard with all the stuff that these characters go through. I just don’t want them to lose the plot when we’re so close to the end of the show. Anyway, episode 8 focuses more on Ho-Su’s side of things. We learn some shocking stuff about him that we never could’ve guessed, it was never even hinted at. Meanwhile, we get a little bit of info about Park Sang-Yeong, and things are getting a bit too complicated there. I’m not entirely sure where this is going. Anyway, the end of the episode leaves Mi-Ji in quite a predicament, and I’m not sure how she’s going to get out of this one, but let’s recap episode 8 to find out how things got so complicated.

Spoiler Alert

Is Bun-Hong Ho-Su’s Real Mom?

At the beginning of Our Unwritten Seoul episode 8, we learn that Ho-Su is not Bun-Hong’s biological son. Turns out Ho-Su’s mom died a long time before he moved to the house opposite the twins. Ho-Su’s father remarried out of the blue, and this left him angry. Ho-Su asked him why it couldn’t just be the two of them, and later even asked to go out with just his dad for a special outing. This is when his dad passed away in the accident, so Ho-Su feels especially like a burden on his mom. Bun-Hong was treated badly by her own family for choosing to raise Ho-Su as her own and not abandoning him. Already, she felt like an outsider with her biological family, but this was her opportunity to choose between her sisters and Ho-Su. She chose the latter and has never regretted it. Bun-Hong’s sisters failed to tell her that her mom was sick and dying, but she got a call on the night that she was doing her husband’s ancestral rites at home, when she had a fight with Ho-Su. He told her that there was no reason for her to pretend they were family when nobody was around. This made her upset, but she couldn’t come back the same day, so she called Mi-Ji and told her to tell Ho-Su to lock up because she took the wrong bus and went too far.

At the time, Mi-Ji didn’t know why Ho-Su started crying, but in the present day, when she asks him why he cried that night, he tells her it’s because he thought his mom abandoned him that day. Grief is interesting like that; it brings people together in the most unexpected ways. Now, Ho-Su doesn’t even have to pretend he’s Bun-Hong’s kid; he believes it. Now, he tells her to look after herself and not worry about him. He still hopes not to be a burden on her, though. It turns out she’d told Mi-Ji that night that she’d fought with Ho-Su; she knew Mi-Ji would be able to help console the boy. Later, Bun-Hong tells her friend, the girls’ mom, the truth when she’s helping her wash her hair. I guess the honesty from her in the hospital made her want to be honest as well. She tells her that it doesn’t matter if you’re not related by blood; not everyone deserves to be a mom, but she very much did because she raised Ho-Su as her own, and how wonderfully.

What Is Ro-Sa Planning?

Ro-Sa learns from Ho-Su’s ex-senior-colleague (who I thought was his boss) that Ho-Su used to work at the firm that is now contracting for the company that wants to buy her land. She tells Ho-Su that he should stop worrying about her and that she doesn’t plan on keeping him on for the negotiation anymore. The only reason she agreed to listen to the colleague was because he mentioned her old friend, who died after killing Ro-Sa’s husband. We still don’t know the full story yet. On the other hand, at the bank, she learns about a policy where she can essentially adopt an adult for inheritance because she has no living relatives. She’s going to nominate Mi-Rae, but it’s actually Mi-Ji.

Will Mi-Rae Stay Back?

The main plot of episode 8 is actually Mi-Rae and Mi-Ji spending some time with the men who are into them. Of course, in Mi-Rae’s case, this isn’t entirely spelled out yet, but Se-Jin asks her to go stargazing with him. He also asks her if she would consider staying back and watching the strawberries grow, to which she says she’ll consider it an option. Now, by the end of the show, I’m almost sure she decides to stay back, but when she goes to tell Se-Jin this, he gets a phone call and walks away. At the same time, Mi-Rae’s interrupted, and a man walks in and asks her if she’s going to take over the field after Se-Jin. Turns out he’s planning on leaving for America to go work again. It’s going to be really frustrating if Mi-Rae doesn’t actually talk to him about it and just decides to go away because she believes he’s going to leave anyway.

Meanwhile, Mi-Ji and Ho-Su go on a date, and they use his Seoul guide from a decade ago to go around, but most of the places have now shut down. Mi-Ji worries Ho-Su’s not happy spending time with her, but the truth is, he got sick in the little time he stood outside waiting for her to come out when he made his confession. She wonders if they’re boyfriend and girlfriend because she told him she likes him too, but she can’t get herself to ask him openly. To make matters worse, when he introduces her to his colleagues as his girlfriend, she doesn’t tell them she’s unemployed, she tells them she works Mi-Rae’s job. Later, though, she confesses how she felt on the date, and he tells her he was just unwell, but he didn’t want to feel like a burden to her. He also apologizes for overreacting to her lying, but it was kind of a knee-jerk reaction for him. He obviously likes Mi-Ji for who she is, and he gives her a new and updated Seoul guide.

On the other hand, it turns out that Sang-Yeong is a man who looks identical to Mi-Ji and Mi-Rae’s dad, so Mi-Rae became close to him in the hope that he’d be a good person like her own dad. When Mi-Ji sees him, she’s entirely shocked by the resemblance and immediately tears up. Later, when she talks to Mi-Rae about it, they both start crying because Mi-Ji wonders why her sister wouldn’t tell her what had happened and how this guy reminded her of their dad. Mi-Ji tells her that she’s the only one who would actually believe her, no matter what. Mi-Ji tells Sang-Yeong she’s quitting the project, but he should make sure she doesn’t get penalized for it. But Sang-Yeong also brings up the name of Su-Yeon, who previously worked on the project and who Mi-Rae protected. Tae-I reveals in this episode that he is Su-Yeon’s brother and has something important to tell Mi-Rae, but they don’t get the chance to talk because Mi-Ji gets scared seeing that he followed her home in the middle of the night.

At the end of episode 8, Sang-Yeong tells Mi-Rae’s boss that she has an identical twin, and this is what gets the girls in trouble. While at work, her bosses ask her to use a biometric fingerprint scanner to open a door, and this is where the episode ends. What they’re doing at this point is clearly harassment, and Mi-Ji isn’t one to back off easily, but I wonder how she’s going to get Mi-Rae out of this situation.
