I’ve only just realized Our Unwritten Seoul has episodes that run an hour and twenty minutes, just like the rest of the weekend shows on Netflix. I don’t understand why watching 2 semi-movies weekly is becoming the norm. I mean, there are full-length feature films that take less time to sit through, but I digress. With only 4 episodes left, the mysteries that have been left open are finally being answered. Plus, there is much progress in both Mi-Rae and Mi-Ji’s storylines, making the show more interesting now that we’re coming to the end. I can’t go without talking about the romance aspect either, and I’m really hoping to see Mi-Rae get a happy ending just like Mi-Ji. There’s no denying Park Bo-Young is fantastic at romance, and both the romances in this show are very realistic and sweet. Anyway, with that said, let’s get into episode 9 without further ado.
Spoiler Alert
What Happened With Mi-Rae?
The episode begins with the cliffhanger last week’s episode ended on, with Mi-Rae’s seniors asking her to use her fingerprint for a biometric door. They think she’s the wrong twin. But, as it goes, this is a drama, so the scanner accepts the fingerprint, because Mi-Rae has already come back to Seoul. Mi-Rae has always been the girl who has to pick her fights wisely. This is probably why she always seems like she’s choosing the easy way out. Listen, kids, stop judging people, because most of them have a reason for why they choose to be a certain way. The previous night, when Mi-Rae arrived, Tae-I was already there, talking to Mi-Ji (posing as Mi-Rae). Of course, Mi-Ji was surprised to see Mi-Rae there, because they hadn’t discussed that she’d be back so soon. They then had a fight about Mi-Ji meddling in Mi-Rae’s problems, and Mi-Rae basically told Mi-Ji to go back because this is none of her business. While that’s true, Mi-Rae should’ve remembered that Mi-Ji switched with her to help her. But, instead of being thankful about it, she tells Mi-Ji it must’ve been easy living as Mi-Rae. I don’t know why she’d get spiteful out of the blue, but I guess it’s everything that’s going on that’s really bothering her.
Finally, we learn what happened with Mi-Rae and Sang-Yeong. Mi-Rae was a hardworking employee, but after the situation with Su-Yeon, people started giving her too much work, shunning her, etc. Back then, Sang-Yeong, a married man, chose to help her and stay back overnight to make things easier for her. Sang-Yeong even told Mi-Rae that he had a daughter with the same name as her. He would go so far as to drop her home because they were working so late, so to repay his kindness, Mi-Rae got him gift vouchers. But he told her to buy him a coffee every morning with her own if she really felt thankful. Mi-Rae promised to do so, and every morning she’d leave his coffee at his table. But then, one day, Sang-Yeong introduced Mi-Rae to someone else at a fancy dinner outside and got too drunk. Mi-Rae offered to drop him home, but he tried to kiss her while she was trying to put his seat belt on. She told him that she wanted to be a cordial coworker and that she admired him as a senior, but this was not what she wanted. At the time, he begged her not to tell anybody and even got on his knees. She told him that she wanted things to go back to how they were, and she would pretend none of this happened. But he made himself look like the victim and said she seduced him. Then his wife came to the office and slapped her in front of everyone, making it look like she really did seduce him. But Mi-Rae didn’t back down then. Instead, she chose to fight legally and even told HR that she was sexually harassed, but this made things much worse for her because everyone sided with Sang-Yeong.
Finally, when she saw Ho-Su show up, Mi-Rae ran away because the questions were too much for her to deal with. However, I’d like to point out that the show encourages people to keep fighting, because in a situation like this, people like Mi-Rae get crushed by the weight of public opinion and those more powerful. But seeing how things are turned around to the point Mi-Rae is made to feel like she was in the wrong, with all the questions she gets asked, anyone watching can recognize manipulation in action.
What’s Ro-Sa’s Secret?
While I don’t think we have all the information about Ro-Sa yet, I’m still wondering about her friend who keeps coming up; there’s some important stuff we learn in episode 9. Ro-Sa asks Mi-Ji (whom she still believes is Mi-Rae) about whether she’d consider becoming a guardian, but not for her, for her son, who is in a facility. This is the big secret that we’ve been missing this whole time. Mi-Ji tells her she needs some time to think about it, but somehow in the middle of this, Lee Chung-Gu shows up at Ro-Sa’s restaurant and tells her that he’s going to use her son against her in the legal battle for her place. He tells her specifically that someone working close to her is giving him information. This is obviously not true, but she ends up believing him.
But on the other hand, Mi-Ji, who has nothing else to do in Seoul, musters the courage to say yes to Ro-Sa but also to tell her the truth about who she is. The timing is terrible, though, so Ro-Sa ends up yelling at Mi-Ji, telling her she should’ve never trusted her and that this is the second time this is happening to her. Now I’m really curious to know what her friend did back in the day. On the other hand, Mi-Ji is staying at Ho-Su’s, and they finally kiss! But he gets offered a job, so she tells him they should celebrate instead of talking about the Ro-Sa situation. Later at night, though, Mi-Ji can’t help but want to leave Seoul, feeling like a complete loser. She removes her extensions in the middle of the night and tells Ho-Su she needs to leave right then; however, he tells her that they’ll go back together in the morning if she likes, but for now, she should try to sleep. He holds her tight while she cries.
What Does Mi-Rae Choose To Do?
Mi-Ji goes back to their hometown and immediately gets to work on the strawberry farm, but Se-Jin knows she’s “Ms. Seoul.” He tells her that she can definitely work with him, because it was her resume he liked. It looks like Se-Jin is choosing to stay back, but Mi-Rae ran away from him too, because I guess, in a way, she was worried about rejection after she’s caught feelings. Meanwhile, Ho-Su gets called in for a lunch with executives at the office he’s meant to join, but he doesn’t like it at all because they’re just there because they think he’s going to play dirty like his senior, Chun-Gu. He’s obviously not taking the job.
Back home, Ok-Hui notices Mi-Ji being different again, and this makes her realize that the girls had switched places. She asks her own mom if she knew the whole time, and when she realizes she did, she gets mad and returns home. She fights with Mi-Ji because she can’t believe the girls think their mom is so stupid. Mi-Ji says some stuff in anger, telling her mom that it doesn’t even matter that they switched because she can’t tell them apart anyway. Mi-Ji worries, especially because both her mom and her grandmother are alone, so she feels responsible for them. Finally, Ok-Hui tells Mi-Ji that that’s not something she should be burdened with, and that she should just go do what she wants to do.
At the end of Our Unwritten Seoul episode 9, Mi-Rae runs into Tae-I again. She tells him she doesn’t want to talk, but he tells her that even if she’s chosen not to use the evidence he’s gathered, she should come see his sister with him. Earlier, Tae-I made an anonymous post exposing the company; however, everybody immediately thinks it’s Mi-Rae who did it. This makes her furious, because this is the same thing that happened earlier; it doesn’t matter that someone else is the guilty party, she’s the one who gets blamed. But, when Mi-Rae goes to see her senior, Tae-I’s sister, she’s behind a door, unable to bring herself to come out, just like Mi-Ji. Mi-Rae apologizes to Su-Yeon because she won’t be able to help her, but Su-Yeon apologizes for running away alone, making Mi-Rae break down.
When she goes back home, Sang-Yeong is waiting for her, and she records their conversation for safety. He tells her that she needs to back off and she shouldn’t have made that post. She tells him she didn’t, but he says it doesn’t matter because everybody thinks it was her. She calls him out for doing the same thing twice, and turns to leave, but he catches the recording. He grabs her and tries to crush the phone, but fortunately, Mi-Ji shows up and beats the guy up. They get taken to the police, but Ho-Su shows up as their lawyer. The episode ends with Mi-Rae saying she’s going to file another case of sexual harassment against Sang-Yeong. But the other big problem that Ho-Su and Mi-Ji will have to deal with is Ro-Sa’s, because Chung-Gu is going to publish what seems to be incriminating news about Ro-Sa in a paper. Ho-Su was wrong about him; he isn’t a good person and never will be.
